RESOLUTION

MARC MARMARO

WHEREAS, Marc Marmaro was born on February 26, 1948, in the Bronx, New York; and,

WHEREAS, Marmaro went on to receive a B.A. from George Washington University in 1969 and J.D. cum laude, Order of the Coif, from New York University School of Law in 1972; and,

WHEREAS, in 1972, Marmaro clerked for the Honorable John J. Gibbons, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit; and,

WHEREAS, Marmaro served the U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of New York as an assistant U.S. attorney from 1975 to 1978; and,

WHEREAS, Marmaro moved to the City of Los Angeles to join Manatt, Phelps & Phillips as a litigation associate and partner until 1981; and,

WHEREAS, in 1981, Marmaro helped found the law firm Jeffer, Mangels, Butler, & Marmaro, LLP, which has grown from 11 employees to over 140 in three cities across the United States; and,

WHEREAS, Marmaro is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers; and,

WHEREAS, in 2004, he was named Lawyer of the Year in Intellectual Property by California Lawyer for negotiating the settlement of spinal fusion technology patent disputes for $1.35 billion; and,

WHEREAS, on June 30,2010, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed him to the Los Angeles County Superior Court; and,

WHEREAS, on August 5, 2010, Marc Marmaro was officially sworn into office as a Judge for Los Angeles County Superior Court; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the City Council of Los Angeles, the Mayor, and the City Attorney extends their congratulations to Marc Marmaro for his judicial appointment, outstanding achievements, and constant pursuit for justice. ~·

RESOLUTION "Boulevard Der Stars"

Whereas, In 1960, the famed Hollywood Walk of Fame was born in Hollywood ,California to recognize an eclectic mix of actors, musicians, directors, producers, musical and theatrical groups, fictional characters, and others for their entertaimnent contributions. Since those early days, The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has maintained the glory of a community whose name means glamour and excitement in the four corners of the world, and

Whereas, The citizens of Berlin will soon have their Boulevard Der Stars on the famous Potsdamer Strasse, which will recognize the many accomplishments of those that have performed for many years in the artistic media of film and the entertaimnent spotlight, and

Whereas, The City of Berlin became a Sister City of Los Angeles, on June 27th 1967, becoming the 6th Sister City, now among 25 cities throughout the world, and

Whereas, The location of "Boulevard Der Stars" is in one of the most visited areas in Berlin, at Postdamer Platz, adjacent to the Berlinale and the Deutsche Kinemathek, making this area the focal point of many thousands of visitors yearly, and

Whereas, the first 40 brass stars to be installed on the red carpet will be personalities who, by virtue of their great achievements, have put their stamp on cinema and television in Germany and beyond, and

Whereas, The architects and spatial designers of Graft Architects, and Art+Com, used the symbol of the star to establish a playful extension of the main idea of red carpet, stars, cameras, and spotlights, thereby helping the visitor to participate and assume an active role in the grand scheme of a film premiere, and

Whereas, five of those being honored were, or are, citizens of the United States and have made great contributions to American film as well as German productions: MARLENE DIETRICH, FRITZ LANG, AR1\1IN MUELLER-STAHL, WOLFGANG PETERSEN, and . In addition, the German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus, and the director Wim Wenders, both participants in major Hollywood productions, will also be honored within the cast of the first 40 stars.

THEREFORE, THE CITIZENS OF LOS ANGELES, THE LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL, ALONG WITH THE HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, WISHES THE BEST FOR "BOULEYARD DER STARS" IN BERLIN, GERMANY. WE ALL HOPE THAT ON THIS DAY, SEPTEMBER 10,2010, WILL BRING MANY MORE STARS TO YOUR WALK OF FAME.

WHEREAS, September 1Oth, 2010 is a crucial day for humanity and its health, for on that day the extraordinary and wondrous Stand Up To Cancer telecast from Los Angeles will take place. Featuring an immense array of beloved and exciting stars of entertainment and showcasing tremendous performances, Stand Up To Cancer will empower and inspire countless people across the globe on September 10th, giving us all a great way to support the fight against cancer while providing essential knowledge in the form of stirring messages and images of hope, grace, scientific and medical progress, individual heroism and united activism; and;

WHEREAS, The Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) telecast of September 1Oth will raise funds that will accelerate innovative cancer research. The broadcast is dedicated to the 12 million U.S. cancer survivors, illustrating how groundbreaking research can change the tide in the fight against the disease. The live, one-hour fundraising event will be simulcast commercial-free on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, Bio, Current TV, Discovery Health, E!, G4, HBO, HBO Latino, MLB Network, mun2, Showtime, Smithsonian Channel, The Style Network, TV One and VH1 and hosted by network news anchors , Diane Sawyer and Brian Williams. The broadcast will air in 195 countries, as well as on the Armed Forces Network. The stars who are participating are simply too numerous to mention here, but they will entertain and inform and answer phone calls from grassroots donors. Also featured on the program will be cancer survivors; and

WHEREAS, Every day, cancer kills 1,600 American, or one per minute. This year, more than 560,000 Americans and eight million people worldwide will succumb to the disease. One in three women and one in two men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes. This is simply unacceptable. In the fall of 2007, a group of women who have been profoundly affected by cancer began working together to marshal the resources of the media and entertainment industries in the fight against cancer. Thus began a remarkable grassroots movement, spurred on and supported by the first Stand Up to Cancer telecast, two years ago. The 2008 telecast helped raise over $100 million. This tremendous Stand Up To Cancer movement now returns to prirnetirne TV on September 10, 2010, at 8PM EST & PST/7PM CT. Executive producing this telecast, as she did in 2008, will be Laura Ziskin, an SU2C founding member and cancer survivor; and

WHEREAS, To date, five multi-disciplinary "Dream Teams" of researchers from more than 50 institutions, as well as 13 young innovative scientists who are undertaking high-risk yet potentially high-reward projects, have received SU2C funding. (The five Dream Teams are the Epigenetics, Pancreatic Cancer, P13K Pathway, Circulator Tumor Cell (CTC) Chip, and Breast Cancer Dream Teams; on the September 10 broadcast, updates will be provided on the work of the five Stand Up To Cancer Dream Teams, and Dr. San jay Gupta, CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent, will report on other new medical developments.) SU2C brings together these scientists from different disciplines across various institutions to work collaboratively, rather than competitively, at a critical time in the field of cancer research; and

WHEREAS, The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), which consists of more than 32,000 scientists engaged in the fight against cancer, is Stand Up To Cancer's sole scientific partner. The AACR, the oldest and largest scientific organization in the world focusing on every aspect of high-quality, innovative cancer research from the bench to the bedside, is responsible for administering and managing the grants, and providing scientific oversight in conjunction with the SU2C Scientific Advisory Committee, led by Nobel Laureate Phillip A. Sharp, Ph.D., institute professor at the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and

WHEREAS, Stand Up To Cancer is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (ElF), a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization. SU2C raises funds to hasten the pace of groundbreaking translational research that can get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives; its star-studded television special builds continuing public support and donations for cutting-edge cancer research that translates at a rapid pace from the laboratory to treatments and technologies benefitting patients. One-hundred percent of all donations received from the public will go directly to cancer research. Viewers will have the ability to donate via a dedicated phone line, the web, or through text. Fundraising and public awareness will also be abetted by a pre-show promotion hosted by Cat Deeley, and by pre-show promotion and extended play featured on numerous on-line portals and destination sites (which will all also stream the on-hour special online), including ABC, ABC News, AOL, Bing, CBS, CBS News, Crackle, Discovery Health, E! Online, Fox, G4, , Livestream, MLB Network, MSN, mun2, NBC, Style Network, TV Guide, TV One, Ustream, VEVO, VH1, Wonderwaii.MSN.com, yahoo.com and YouTube;and

WHEREAS, SU2C's founding members include Laura Ziskin, , Lisa Paulsen, Katie Couric, Kathleen Lobb, Rusty Robertson, Sue Schwartz, Ellen Ziffren and Noreen Fraser. Major League Baseball was its founding donor. Other major SU2C supporters include Sidney Kimmel, the country's largest individual supporter of cancer research; Amgen, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, The Gateway for Cancer Research Foundation, GlaxoSmithKline, Inter-American Development Bank (DB), Wallis Annenberg & The Annenberg Foundation, Alliance for Global Good, Milken Family Foundation, Philips Electronics, Tisch, The Island Def Jam Music Group, Comcast and many others. WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles cherishes all involved in championing Stand Up To Cancer, be it the networks donating broadcast time, every corporate sponsor and participating institution and organization, celebrities and all who perform, scientists, researchers, technicians, the amazing volunteers and anyone who donates. The City of Los Angeles commends with special pride the Herculean involvement of the media and entertainment industries, which historically are pivotal to Los Angeles and our economic prosperity, rich history, dynamic tourism and majestic artistic heritage: through Stand Up to Cancer, the people and businesses of the media and entertainment industries once again demonstrate their splendid generosity of spirit which touches all of Los Angeles and resounds around the world:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Los Angeles hereby salutes and celebrates Stand Up To Cancer by declaring September 10, 2010 "Stand Up To Cancer Day" in the City of Los Angeles. This grateful City treasures all involved in Stand Up to Cancer, because the fight against cancer is a vital grassroots movement of dedicated activism and devoted skill for the sake of compassion, progress, life and good health. Through its steadfast ways and caring deeds, Stand Up To Cancer has made the City of Los Angeles a place in which to live.

VERNA ("VEE") MOTTO

WHEREAS, Vema ("Vee"') Jane Houck was born in Scranton, PA on April24, 1919; and

WHEREAS, Vee attended Central High School where she excelled in academics and theatre; and

WHEREAS, at Syracuse University Vee majored in sociology and participated in many theatrical productions. Vee received her graduate degree in social work from Western Reserve University (now Case Western) in Cleveland, Ohio; and

WHEREAS, during a summer internship at a camp for diabetic children, Vee met her husband­ to-be, "Rocco" Motto, who was also working there while a medical student. Vee and Rocco were married during WWII and moved to Los Angeles when the war ended; and

WHEREAS, Vee worked as a social worker at the VA Hospital while Rocco began his psychiatric training. Work for pay ended when Vee's son was born in 1948, and this was the beginning of her extraordinary commitment to public service; and

WHEREAS, since 1953 when Vee and Rocco moved to Brentwood Park, Vee has been the lifeblood of Brentwood Park and a role model for all of us to emulate; and

WHEREAS, Vee is the first one to welcome newcomers to Brentwood Park, knocking on their doors encouraging them to become active members of the community and to join the Brentwood Park Property Owners Association. Vee has organized monthly coffees to discuss neighborhood issues, the association's annual City Officials Dinner, as well as the annual meeting and October Fest; and

WHEREAS, in addition to Vee's commitment to the community, she has quietly supported educational institutions and organizations that provide meaningful work for children, animals, the environment and the irnproverished; and

WHEREAS, Vee is beloved for her all-around wonderful presence and is an inspiration to all; and

WHEREAS, Vee's love for living in Brentwood Park and her active civic involvement over many decades deserves the thanks and appreciation of the entire community; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council along with the Mayor and City Attorney commends Vee Motto for her leadership and dedication to improving the quality oflife in Brentwood Park and extends best wishes as she relocates to Philadelphia to be near her daughter and family.
