Daily Scripture Readings for the Easter Season From Easter to Ascension to Pentecost April 11-May 23, 2021 Daily Scripture Readings for the Easter Season From Easter to Ascension to Pentecost The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated as one great feast. The Easter season is considered to be one great Sunday—one feast that spans fifty days. This period is sometimes known as the Great Sunday. The eighth Sunday after Easter is Pentecost Sunday such that this season is a “week of weeks.” Towards the end of this season, the Ascension occurs forty days after Easter. This is an important part of the Easter story in that Christ has to ascend in order for salvation to be complete and fulfilled. Following are a list of daily Scripture readings that take us through the resurrection narratives, the post-resurrection appearances of Christ, the doctrine of the resurrection, Christ’s ascension to the right hand of the Father, and the birth of the Church at the day of Pentecost. In addition, there are three simple liturgies—two for morning and one for evening. These are intended as a guide or starting point for those desiring a bit more structure to their devotional time. You can use them with others or on your own; use these suggested verses or substitute others; or use different parts on different days. First Morning Liturgy The Call to Prayer —Psalm 51:16 Open my lips, O Lord, And my mouth shall proclaim your praise. The Refrain —Proverbs 12:28 In the path of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death. The Request for Presence O God, come to my assistance O Lord, make haste to help me. The Lord’s Prayer Scripture Reading Prayer Lord God, Almighty and Everlasting Father, You have brought me in safety to the beginning of this day. Preserve me with Your mighty power that I may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all I do, direct me to the fulfilling of Your purposes; through Jesus Christ me Lord. Amen. Second Morning Liturgy The Call to Prayer—Psalm 150:6 Let everything that has breath Praise the Lord, Hallelujah! Greeting—Psalm 28:7 Blessed is the Lord! For He has heard the voice of my prayer. Refrain—Psalm 56:13 For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. The Lord’s Prayer Scripture Reading Prayer Come, my Light, and illumine my darkness. Come, my Life, and revive me from death. Come, my Physician, and heal my wounds. Come, Flame of divine love, and burn up the thorns of my sins, kindling my heart with the flame of your love. Come, my King, sit upon the throne of my heart and reign there. For you alone are my King and my Lord. Amen. Evening Liturgy The Call to Prayer—Psalm 141:1-2 O Lord, I call upon you; hasten to me! Give ear to my voice when I call to you! Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice! The Refrain—Psalm103:14 For He himself knows whereof we are made; He remembers that we are but dust. Scripture Reading The Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise You. We bless You. We adore You. We glorify You. We give thanks to You for Your great glory. Concluding Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant me to so follow in faith where you have led the way, that I may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake in your likeness; for your tender mercies’ sake. Amen. The Final Petition May the Lord God, father of all mercy, grant us who dwell here a peaceful night and a perfect end.
