General Introduction Human activities alter global, regional and local processes (Vitousek et al. 1997, Chapin et al. 2000). They affect biogeochemical cycles, habitats, ecosystems, biotic communities and the distribution of species. Although they may locally increase species numbers by introduction of nonindigenous species, human activities result in a world-wide decline in species diversity, a homogenisation of species communities and a loss of genetic information (Ehrlich and Ehrlich 1981, Meffe and Carroll 1997, Lodge and Shrader-Frechette 2003). Human-induced environmental changes thereby reduce opportunities for future use and evolution of species (Western 2001), and they can negatively affect the productivity and vital functions of ecosystems (Schulze and Mooney 1993, Tilman 1999). This would not only deteriorate the quality of human life but can eventually threaten the whole functionality of Planet Earth’s biosphere. Thus, the development of measures counteracting these negative impacts should be in everybody’s interest whose thinking is not restricted to a present time welfare. The success of such measures will depend on the fundamental understanding of processes connected with anthropogenic alterations and with conservation and restoration efforts (Dobson et al. 1997, Symstad et al. 2003). In order to understand biological processes and the effects of anthropogenic activities on them, an adequate knowledge of unaltered processes is essential as they have been the basis for the current and (still) working systems (Linsenmair 1990, Ewel 1999). However, this source of information is vanishing since many anthropogenic influences (e.g. climate change, rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and nitrogen deposition) are already affecting even the most remote and best protected areas (Gallagher and Carpenter 1997). If natural systems can provide unique insights into the functioning of environmental processes, it thus seems necessary to understand them as fast as possible. Biological systems are always influenced by processes acting on very different spatial and temporal scales, regardless of whether they are strongly determined by human activities (urban landscapes, agricultural fields, plantations, etc.) or more or less natural (remote, protected areas). Consequently, they cannot be fully understood without reference to local, regional and global processes (Ricklefs 1987, Morton and Law 1997, Lawton 2000). The studies presented here will focus on local, small-scale processes acting on coexisting and potentially interacting populations of organisms, using arthropod communities on different species of savannah trees as study system. The results of this work, however, should be considered in a broader context. They will serve to establish larger-scale studies investigating the influence of regional factors, for example comparisons of arthropod communities of the same habitat-entities (trees of the same species) in different West African countries, possibly embedded in differing habitat matrices. They will allow to test for the effects of anthropogenic land conversion and to monitor influences coming along with a continuously changing environment due to ‘global change’ (both in tropical and temperate regions)(Singh 2002). The study of arthropod communities on trees and shrubs (arboricolous arthropod communities) of an unsettled West African savannah (Comoé National Park, Republic of Côte d’Ivoire) is especially informative and promising for several reasons. 1) The study area can be considered to be almost natural. Although changes in composition of savannah vegetation occurred in historical times as a consequence of an anthropogenically increased bushfire-frequency, it still represents the largest area of protected and unconverted savannah habitat in West Africa. At least for the studied processes (arthropod species pool, plant 2 I. General Introduction and Thesis Outline population structure), it provides the basic data on natural systems mentioned above, which may be unavailable from areas more heavily altered by anthropogenic influences. 2) The type of habitat investigated has not been studied in detail hitherto with respect to insect-plant interrelationships. Therefore, the studies provide new information for an ecosystem which is typical for large areas of Africa between the Sahelian and the tropical forest zone and which is strongly threatened by climate change and land conversion. The studies thereby also contribute to the concerted rapid ‘action plan’ called for by Basset et al. (2003b) to investigate canopies in African savannahs in a concerted, immediate way. 3) Arboricolous arthropod communities are regarded as a model system to study the relationship between local environmental variables and the structure of speciose communities (Moran and Southwood 1982). These communities can easily be delimited (all arthropods living on one tree) and sampled in a representative, almost complete way (depending on the size of the tree and the sampling methods used). This allows to investigate the factors regulating community structure (abundance, identity and number of species) and to compare different theories that have been proposed to explain community structure (Morin 1999). For the understanding of community organisation, two explanation-approaches are especially important (Wiens 1984, Linsenmair 1990). The first states communities to be a product of species- specific habitat requirements and interspecific competition in an environment characterised by limited resources – so called equilibrium communities or ‘deterministic’ community organisation. In case the specific requirements are known for the species, the composition of individual communities would then be predictable. The second approach highlights the importance of random processes (colonisation events, disturbances), which allow different species

Epiphlaeus includes six species as follows: E. adonis sp. nov., E. duo- decimmaculatus (Klug), E. fundurufus sp. nov., E. princeps (Gorham), E. pulcherrimus (Gorham), E. quattuordecimmaculatus Chevrolat, and E. tigrinus sp. nov. The monotypic Opitzius is based on O. thoracicus Barr. Specimens of these two genera are variously deposited in 37 institutional and private collections. These checkered beetles frequent the surface of felled tree boles to forage on adults and immatures of lignicolous insects. Their large size and mobility make them very noticeable on the bark of fallen trees. It is postulated that they are participants in a mimetic ring with log-inhabiting mutillids and flies part of the mimetic mix. Hennigian principles were applied to 22 adult morphological characters, which yielded a nearly totally resolved phylogenetic hypothesis between Epiphlaeus and Opitzius, and among Epiphlaeus species groups. The combined geographical range of the inclusive species extends from northwestern Nicaragua to southeastern Brazil. It is hypothesized that ancestral Epiphlaeus – Opitzius evolved in South America with some descendants entering Insular Central America after closure of the Panamanian portals during the Miocene. Pleistocene climatic factors are thought to have influenced species diversity, and perhaps speciation events in conjunction with aspects of dispersal, vicariance, and taxon pulse dynamics.

Previous study showed that the dichloromethanolic fraction from the barks of trunk of A. leiocarpa (ALF) has induced an endothelium-independent and endothelium- dependent vasodilation effect and had the capacity to inhibit in vitro, purified cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (PDEs) activity. The aims of this study were to better underline ALF-induced endothelium-independent vasorelaxation in an organ model. The results showed that ALF significantly reduce the contractile response to U46619 in porcine coronary artery rings without endothelium that were in concentration-dependent manner.

Literature data, AntWeb and other Internet resources recorded only 59 species from this country. For comparison from Senegal, which surrounds three sides of Gambia, 89 species have been recorded so far. Both of these records seem poor when compared with 654 species known from the whole western Africa (SHUCKARD 1840, ANDRÉ 1889, EMERY 1892, MENOZZI 1926, SANTSCHI 1939, LUSH 2007, ANTWIKI 2017, ANTWEB 2017, DIAMÉ et al. 2017, TAYLOR 2018). Most records from Gambia come from general web checklists of species. Unfortunately, they lack locality data, date of sampling, collector name, coordinates of the locality and notes on habitats.

Cannon (ABSTRACT) The nutritional ecology of the black carpenter ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus (De Geer) was investigated by examining macronutrient preference and particle consumption in foraging workers. The crops of foragers collected in the field were analyzed for macronutrient content at two-week intervals through the active season. Choice tests were conducted at similar intervals during the active season to determine preference within and between macronutrient groups. Isolated individuals and small social groups were fed fluorescent microspheres in the laboratory to establish the fate of particles ingested by workers of both castes. Under natural conditions, foragers chiefly collected carbohydrate and nitrogenous material. Carbohydrate predominated in the crop and consisted largely of simple sugars. A small amount of glycogen was present. Carbohydrate levels did not vary with time. Lipid levels in the crop were quite low. The level of nitrogen compounds in the crop was approximately half that of carbohydrate, and exhibited seasonal dependence. Peaks in nitrogen foraging occurred in June and September, months associated with the completion of brood rearing in Camponotus.

Traditional, shaded agroforests may support high levels of biodiversity, for some groups even approaching that of undisturbed tropical forests. However, it is unclear to what extent forest fauna is represented in this diversity and how management affects forest fauna in agroforests. We studied lower canopy ant and beetle fauna in cacao agroforests and forests in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, a region dominated by cacao agroforestry. We compared ant and beetle species richness and composition in forests and cacao agroforests and studied the impact of two aspects of management intensification (the decrease in shade tree diversity and in shade canopy cover) on ant and beetle diversity. The agroforests had three types of shade that represented a decrease in tree diversity (high, intermediate and low diversity). Species richness of ants and beetles in the canopies of the cacao trees was similar to that found in lower canopy forest trees.

However, the landmass has received less attention even if it has high ecological, environmental and economic importance. The present study was conducted in Hirmi forest, which is one of the dry forest in Northwestern, Ethiopia; to study the floristic composition, plant community types, community-environment relation, vegetation structure and regeneration status of the forest. Method: Vegetation and environmental data were collected from 80 sampling plots having equal size of 25m×25m were designated as the main plots. Within the main plot, five 2mx2m subplots were laid to record seedlings, saplings, and herbaceous species. Furthermore, within each subplot, soil samples were collected to analyze the relationship of edaphic parameters with the plant community. DBH, height, BA, density, vertical structure and frequency were computed. Floristic diversity and evenness were computed using Shannon diversity and Evenness indices. The plant community types and vegetation-environment relationships were analyzed using classification and ordination tools in R package (ver. 3.6.1), respectively. Result: A total of 171 vascular plant species belonging to 135 genera and 56 families were recorded.

Madl* Abstract The ant collection of the Natural History Museum Vienna (Austria) contains syntypes of nine species described from Eritrea: Aphaenogaster clavata EMERY, 1877 (= Pheidole clavata (EMERY, 1877)), Cam- ponotus carbo EMERY, 1877, Melissotarsus beccarii EMERY, 1877, Monomorium bicolor EMERY, 1877, Pheidole rugaticeps EMERY, 1877, Pheidole speculifera EMERY, 1877, Polyrhachis antinorii EMERY, 1877 (= Polyrhachis viscosa SMITH, 1858) and Tetramorium doriae EMERY, 1881. All syntypes were collected in Eritrea except the syntype of Monomorium luteum EMERY, 1881, which was collected in Yemen. A prelimi- nary checklist of the ants of Eritrea comprises 114 species and subspecies of seven subfamilies.
