EUROPE WEEK 5TH-12TH MAY 2013 Activities and events marking European Year of Citizens 2013 40th anniversary of Ireland in the EU Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union EUROPE WEEK Europe Day is celebrated every year on 9th May to mark the genesis of what has become a Union of 27 countries. Because this year is a special year for Ireland in the EU, we are designating a whole week to events and activities with a European focus. Why is 2013 a significant year? We in Ireland are marking forty years as a Member State of the EU. We are also celebrating the European Year of Citizens. And from January until June, we are holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Being in charge of the European agenda means that Ireland is chairing 1600 meetings, 180 of which are taking place in Ireland. We have been using this leadership role in the pursuit of stability, jobs and growth in Europe. You can read more about progress to date on the Presidency policy programme on www.eu2013.ie Europe Week (5th to 12th May 2013), though, is not just about business. It is an opportunity for people to participate in debate, culture, entertainment and other social activities with Europe at their heart. This leaflet has brought together many of the activities being organised across Ireland by the EU Presidency, the Arts Council, the Gathering, the Houses of the Oireachtas, the Communicating Europe Initiative, European Movement Ireland and other organisations.
