NationalNational SurveySurvey ofof NativeNative WoodlandsWoodlands 20032003 --20082008 Volume I: Main report Philip Perrin, James Martin, Simon Barron, Fionnuala O’Neill, Kate McNutt & Aoife Delaney Botanical, Environmental & Conservation Consultants Ltd. 2008 A report submitted to the National Parks & Wildlife Service Executive Summary The National Survey of Native Woodlands in Ireland included the survey of 1,217 woodland sites across all 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland during 2003-2007. Site selection was carried out using the Forest Inventory Planning System 1998 (FIPS) and local knowledge. Surveys comprised the recording of site species lists and information at the site level on topography, management, grazing, natural regeneration, geographical situation, adjacent habitat types, invasive species, dead wood and boundaries. Relevés were recorded in each of the main stand types identified at each site. For each relevé, data were recorded on vascular plant and bryophyte cover abundance, soil type and soil chemistry, notable lichens, stand structure, and natural regeneration. Data were also incorporated from a number of external sources. This resulted in a database with data from 1,320 sites and 1,667 relevés. The relevé dataset was analysed using hierarchical clustering and indicator species analysis. Four major woodland groups were defined: Quercus petraea – Luzula sylvatica (260 relevés), Fraxinus excelsior – Hedera helix (740 relevés), Alnus glutinosa – Filipendula ulmaria (296 relevés) and Betula pubescens – Molinia caerulea (371 relevés). Further analysis of the dataset divided these four groups into twenty-two vegetation types. For each vegetation type a synoptic table of the floristic data was produced, together with a list of key indicator species, a list of example sites, summary environmental and stand structure data and a distribution map. -

Stage 2: from Celbridge to Lyons Estate
ARTHUR’S WAY, CELBRIDGE Arthur’s Way is a heritage trail across northeast County Kildare that follows in the footsteps of Arthur Guinness. In just 16 km, it links many of the historic sites associated with Ireland’s most famous brewers – the Guinness family. Visitors are invited to explore Celbridge - where Arthur STAGE 2: FROM CELBRIDGE TO LYONS ESTATE spent his childhood, Leixlip - the site of his first brewery and Oughterard graveyard - Arthur’s final resting place near his ancestral home. The trail rises gently from the confluence of the Liffey and Rye rivers at Leixlip to the Palladian Castletown House estate and onto Celbridge. Kerlin Gallery Elizabeth Magill pink mineral, 2020 oil on canvas 12 x 15.9 in / 12.8 x 16.7 x 2 in framed AVAILABLE $12,500.00 In 2020 Elizabeth Magill spent five months of lockdown on the coast of Ireland, swapping her east London studio for one nestled in the rural landscape which has long featured in her work. The result is a series of paintings, collectively titled 'Her Nature' that explore our physical and psychological relationship to the land. Each painting has its own, very different mood, its own story or mystery such as 'pink mineral,' with its fantastical 'red sky at night,' its title a reference to Rose Quartz, one of many earthly treasures or 'smoulder,' the contained, potential energy of a sleeping volcano. Magill has said of these new works: 'These particular paintings came out of this unusual time. They were my response to nature but are also a kind of lament to the strange times we are living in... perhaps too they are my attempt to suggest a beauty; a beauty created by distance and maybe the passing of time and an acknowledgment to things we can’t fully fathom'. Some of the social and outdoor sport activities may be changed nearer the time as these activities are weather dependent. Prices subject to change. 2. Spaces are limited students who would like to join activities should sign up and pay for excursions as early in the week as possible. For the weekend activities students MUST sign up by the previous Wednesday at morning break. This is crucial for the organisation of the activities. It is also very important for students to be on time for all activities. 3. Meeting points and times will be stated on the excursion board each Monday morning. Sign up sheets are located in the office. 4. In the case of ‘pub outings’ students must be at least 21 and have valid I.D. in order to join. We cannot be held responsible if entry is refused. Neat dress is essential e.g. no running shoes or hoodies. 5. The prices listed for weekday activities are for entrance fees only . Transportation costs are not included, however students may use their own transport tickets where valid. 6. Students who do not want to join the listed activities are welcome to watch a movie in the ‘student cinema’ in the afternoons. Movies will be shown every weekday afternoon starting at 14.00. 7. Students are also welcome to use the ‘games room’ during breaks and after classes. We now have table tennis, billiards, air hockey and table football. 8. -

Signed: Date: 2 Abstract This thesis centres on the analysis of the sustainable management of visitor attractions in Ireland and the development of a tool to aid attraction managers to becoming sustainable tourism businesses. Attractions can be the focal point of a destination and it is important that they are sustainably managed to maintain future business. Fáilte Ireland has written an overview of the attractions sector in Ireland and discussed how they would drive best practice in the sector. However, there have still not been any sustainable management guidelines from Fáilte Ireland for tourist attractions in Ireland. The principal aims of this research was to assess tourism attractions in terms of water, energy, waste/recycling, monitoring, training, transportation, biodiversity, social/cultural sustainable management and economic sustainable management. A sustainable management checklist was then developed to aid attraction managers to sustainability within their attractions, thus saving money and the environment. Findings from this research concluded that tourism attractions in Ireland are not sustainably managed and there are no guidelines, training or funding in place to support these attraction managers in the transition to sustainability. Managers of attractions are not aware or knowledgeable enough in the area of sustainability. -
