In presenting this programme so rich in masterworks of the symphonic literature from Bach to Bartók, Mozart to Mahler, and Beethoven to Stravinsky and beyond, it is also my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to my successor, John O’Kane. I have greatly enjoyed my time as Interim Executive Director, RTÉ Orchestras, Quartet and Choirs and wish John every success in his new role. Finally, on behalf of RTÉ and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, it is my privilege to invite you to join, support and enjoy the orchestra in what promises to be some great music-making over the weeks and months to come. With my dear friends in the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Twe will complete our journey through Prokofiev’s symphonies with a performance of his Symphony No. 7 (8 May), we will pit ourselves against the thrilling musical and rhythmic challenges of Stravinsky’s Rite (29 May) and we will perform, for the very first time, Good Friday–Belfast: 10-4-98 by Irish composer, Gerry Murphy (8 May). With a range of great soloists, both Irish and international, we will, over a number of concerts, perform some of the great orchestral works of Richard Strauss and other great composers of the German tradition. And for me, a very personal touch, music from my family, with the dances from my great- grandfather’s opera Abai. • Missing a Beat
Missing a Beat Bridging Ireland's Orchestral Gaps A Review of Orchestral Provision in Ireland Review of Orchestral Provision in Ireland 1 Introductory note from The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon This note introduces the Report 'Missing a Beat: bridging Ireland's orchestral gaps', from the perspective of the Arts Council. In response to feedback gathered during a major consultation process (2005), in the resulting document, Partnership for the Arts, the Arts Council undertook to “examine national orchestral needs and develop appropriate responses”1. This led to commissioning a review of orchestral provision in late 2007. Much of the primary research was undertaken during 2008 and 2009. The resulting report 'Missing a Beat, Bridging Ireland's Orchestral Gaps' written by Fergus Sheil, was finalised in November 2010. A postscript to the original report was written by the author in May 2012, in order to reflect developments since the original report was completed. This postscript is now appended to the original document. The report offers an overview and analysis of issues affecting orchestral provision in Ireland. It draws upon a wide range of examples of international practice to illustrate what it regards as 'gaps' and to highlight the potential that may exist for development within Ireland. Beyond its usefulness as an important reference document, the report has the potential to stimulate both further dialogue and practical cooperation amongst a broad range of stakeholders within the music sector. In this regard, the report itself notes and anticipates the need for the music sector to develop new models of practice. Embracing such an approach may prove to be essential in terms of ensuring the longer term development and sustainability of orchestral music provision in Ireland.

  • Charles Hazlewood - Brief Biography
Charles Hazlewood - Brief Biography “What Heston Blumenthal is to food, Charles Hazlewood is to music.” The Guardian Charles Hazlewood, British conductor, is a passionate advocate for a wider audience for orchestral music. After winning the European Broadcasting Union conducting competition in his 20’s, he has enjoyed a global and pioneering career conducting some of the world’s greatest orchestras including the Swedish Radio Symphony, Gothenburg & Malmö Symphonies, Copenhagen Philharmonic, the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam and the Philharmonia (London). Hazlewood is known for breaking new ground. By re-inventing the presentation of orchestral music and by collaborating with many ‘stars’ from across the genres of music Hazlewood has sought to embed the ‘magical instrument of the orchestra’ in 21st century music scene; but always with the same goal: to expose the deep, always-modern joy of orchestral music to a new audience. Hazlewood has conducted over 200 world premieres of new scores by contemporary composers, and worked with contemporary musicians as diverse as Wyclef Jean, Professor Green, Goldie, Nigel Kennedy and Steve Reich. He is the first conductor to headline with an orchestra at the Glastonbury International Festival of Contemporary Arts, the greatest rock festival in the world. Hazlewood's work as a composer and music director has been received with consistent critical acclaim. His South African township 'Carmen' film sung in Xhosa won the Golden Bear for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival, his South African musical version of the mediaeval plays 'The Mysteries' was a sell out in London's West End and provoked the first leader on music theatre in the Times in 40 years; his re-invention (with Carl Grose) of John Gay's, the Beggar's Opera (Dead Dog in a Suitcase and Other Love Songs), was selected by the Guardian for its top 10 shows of 2015.

  • The Passion of Joan of Arc with Adrian Utley, Will Gregory and Charles Hazlewood Supported by Hauser & Wirth Somerset
HAUSER & WIRTH Press Release The Passion of Joan of Arc With Adrian Utley, Will Gregory and Charles Hazlewood Supported by Hauser & Wirth Somerset Wells Cathedral, Somerset, England Friday 7 October 2016, 8 pm Hauser & Wirth Somerset, in collaboration with Adrian Utley (Portishead), Will Gregory (Goldfrapp) and award- winning conductor Charles Hazlewood, presents a special live orchestral performance and film screening in the magnificent medieval setting of Wells Cathedral. Adrian Utley and Will Gregory have devised a new score sound-tracking the dramatic and moving narrative of Danish film director Carl Theodor Dreyer’s ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’ (1928), which chronicles Joan of Arc’s trial and execution during her captivity in France. Initially commissioned by the Colston Hall and supported by The Watershed, Bristol, the inventive new score will be performed live alongside a screening of the film, led by Charles Hazlewood with members of the Monteverdi Choir, percussion, horns, harp and synthesizers. Wells Cathedral is located at the heart of England’s smallest city, Wells in Somerset, situated 13 miles from Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Cited as one of the earliest English cathedrals to be constructed in Gothic style, the building is a treasured and significant architectural landmark in the south west of England. The distinguished setting will provide a unique opportunity to witness Hazlewood, Utley and Gregory’s breathtaking and inspired production. Located on the outskirts of Bruton, Hauser & Wirth Somerset is an innovative world-class gallery and arts centre that works in partnership with many local institutions, businesses and organisations to foster local creative talent and champion charities related to art, community, conservation and education.

The Festival would not be possible without our cultural and community partners throughout the UK. But most of all, it simply would not have happened without our great funding partners and sponsors.
