Reflection for this Sunday: It is the fate of the prophet to be rejected. A prophet challenges those who think that they are doing fine. They do not want to hear that they really are not. Jeremiah told the people of Judah that they must repent of their infidelity or God would destroy the temple. They responded by threatening to put him to death. But Jeremiah was able to bear this, for he knew God had called him. After all, God had warned him from the start: “Gird your loins….They will fight against you” (Jeremiah 1:17,19). Jesus faces simi- lar opposition in the Gospel. He upended his neighbors’ expectations, first by revealing that the hometown boy is a prophet and secondly by pointing out that prophets often show favor to outsiders over their own people. Rather than welcoming the universality of his message, they reject him and drive him out of town. Jesus was able to bear all this and more. “(Love) bears all things,” Saint Paul writes to the Corinthians (13:7). Indeed, it is out of love, love for God and love for the people they served, that Jeremiah and Jesus were able to bear all things. How does love enable you to bear all things?
Saints of the Week
We are starting a new Bulletin article, “Saint of the Week”, please watch for this, as it is a great discus- sion point for you and your families to learn together.
Saint Paul Miki: Paulo Miki was born into a wealthy Japanese family. He was educated by the Jesuits in Azuchi and Takatsuki. He joined the Society of Jesus and became a well known and successful preacher – gaining numerous converts to Catholicism.
Miki was arrested and jailed with his fellow Catholics, who were later forced to march 966 kilometers (600 miles) from Kyoto to Nagasaki; all the while singing the Te Deum. On arriving in Nagasaki – which today has the largest Catholic population in Japan – Miki had his chest pierced with a lance while tied to a cross on 5 February 1597.[2]
He preached his last sermon from the cross, and it is maintained that he forgave his executioners, stating that he himself was Japanese. [3] Crucified alongside him were Joan Soan (de Gotó) and Santiago Kisai, also of the Society of Jesus; along with twenty-three other clergy and laity, all of whom were canonized by Pope Pius IX in 1862. Saint Paul Miki’s Feast day is this Wed. Feb. 6th.
And Saint Agatha Virgin and Martyr: Saint Agatha of Sicily is a Christian saint and virgin martyr. Her memorial is Feb 5th. Agatha was born in Palermo Italy and she was martyred in approx.. 251. She is one of seven women, who, along with the Blessed Virgin Mary, are commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass.
According to the 13th-century Golden Legend (III.15) by Jacobus de Voragine, fifteen-year-old Agatha, from a rich and noble family, made a vow of virginity and rejected the amorous advances of the low-born Roman prefect Quintianus, who thought he could force her to turn away from her vow and force her to marry. His persistent proposals were consistently spurned by Agatha, so Quintianus, knowing she was a Christian during the persecution of Decius, had her arrested and brought before the judge. He was the judge. He expected her to give in to his demands when she was faced with torture and possible death, but she simply reaffirmed her belief in God by praying: "Jesus Christ, Lord of all, you see my heart, you know my desires. Possess all that I am. I am your sheep: make me worthy to overcome the devil." With tears falling from her eyes, she prayed for courage. To force her to change her mind, Quintianus sent Agatha to Aphrodisia, the keeper of a brothel, and had her imprisoned there. Agatha never lost her confidence in God, even though she suffered a month of rape, assault, and efforts to get her to abandon She is the Patron Saint of Palermo, Italy. She is also the Patron Saint of breast cancer patients, martyrs, bakers, fires and earthquakes.
Saint Agatha was canonized by Pope Gregory I.

Religious Education News
Congratulations to our children who are participating this weekend in the Rite of Enrollment for their First Holy Communion. It is awesome to watch them prepare for this wonderful Sacrament and gift from God, that is the Holy Eucharist! Please continue to pray for them and all of our children as the journey on and learn more of our faith and what it means to them to be Catholic.
We have asked the children in RE, “What do you want learn more of”? , they have mentioned they are very in- terested in the Saints. So in response to that, we are starting a new Bulletin article, “Saint of the Week”, please watch for this, as it is a great discussion point for you and your families to learn together.

Our Parish’s goal for the 2019 CMAA is $36,500.00. Please remember the 70 per- cent of any amount we raise over goal will be returned to us for our use. This is a great opportunity for our parish! We have now launched the 2019 Catholic Annual Appeal! The CMAA supports 30 important minis- tries that benefit many in our parish as well as pro- vided Sign of Hope to our most vulnerable brothers and sisters. Please take a moment to review the materials you received in the mail from the Diocese of Joliet and prayerfully consider making a generous pledge to this year’s appeal. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Adult Faith Formation: A Study of the Crusades
There was a time when men were warriors and individuals made radical life decisions based on their faith in Jesus Christ and His Church. There was a time when faith permeated all aspects of so- ciety. There was a time when society stressed personal relationships founded on honor, loyalty, and ser- vice to one’s lord. There was a time when men realized they were sinners and that their actions had consequences, even after their death. There was a time when men made vows to God, wore a cloth cross on their garments, and joined armed pilgrimages to regain Church property and defend Christians. These men were Crusaders. The Crusades have always been controversial. Yet, popes and saints, including St. Francis of Assisi, St. Catherine of Siena, and St. Bernard of Clairvaux, encouraged warriors to “take the cross.” Please, join the Adult Faith Formation group as we study the Great Schism of 1054, the Cru- sades, and scholars and saints who influenced the Church from 1000 to 1300. Time: 4:30 to 5:45 pm Wednesday or 9:15 to 10:30 am Thursday Lent: March 6/7 to April 10/11 Place: Basement of St. Mary’s Church
(We may move to the Parish Center for some of the sessions.)
St. Mary’s Book Club Our next selection is “The Great Alone” by Kristin Hannah. This is a novel about a former Vietnam war POW, who after struggling with jobs, etc., impulsively decides to move his family to Alaska. The novel is a portrait of human frailty and resilience as the family struggles due to a lack of preparation and dwindling resources.
Please plan on joining us in our discussion on Tuesday, Feb 19th, at 6:30pm in the Village of Minooka Community Center. Copies of the book are available at the Minooka Library. All are welcome! Questions? Call Mary at 815-467-9577. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES VOCATIONAL CALENDAR-
