Thus, the services might be used as a reminder to all of us that we were created by Him. They would also put us in remembrance of how we were exiled from the delights of Paradise, by means of setting at nought the commandment and tasting of the fruit. We are also mindful that we were cast out through the envy of the originator and author of evil, the serpent and adversary, who was cast down for his pride, but we were cast out from the benefits of paradise and were led by the devil. However, we also are bidden to call to mind how the Son and Logos of God, having suffered in His mercy, bowing the heavens, descended and made His abode in the Virgin and became man for our sake. Indeed, by His conduct of life and other deeds, He showed us the ascent heavenward: first of all, through humility, then by fasting and rejecting bad ways. Even so, He suffered and rose from the dead and was taken up into the heavens. As promised, He sent down the Holy Spirit upon His holy disciples and apostles, who all proclaimed Him to be the Son of God and God most perfect. By means of the preaching of the holy apostles, through the grace of the most Holy Spirit, there is the gathering of all the saints from the ends of the earth, filling the world on high, which was the intention of the Creator from the beginning. We pray that God will bless, comfort, and heal in His love for mankind. Only Orthodox Christians who are prepared may approach the Holy Chalice... Please remember to have respect as we process forward to receive Holy Communion. This is a solemn time for humility, prayer and silence. Similarly, after receiving Holy Communion, proceed back to your place in church quietly and begin saying the “Prayers of Thanksgiv- ing.” It is proper to remain standing in prayer while the rest of the faithful receive Holy Communion. We shouldn‟t be sitting at this time, unless it is absolutely necessary. This is NOT the time for greetings and socialization. With great reverence, we quietly draw near to the Holy Chalice with our arms crossed over our chest. As you step up on the solea to receive, say your name, then open your mouth wide to receive the Holy Gifts. Please do NOT make the sign of the cross immediately after having received Holy Communion, as there is a great danger that you will hit the bottom of the Chalice and thus cause a spill. Having received Holy Communion, carefully step back away from the Chalice (being careful not to touch it) and then down from the solea to make the sign of the Cross and receive a piece of Antidoron (blessed bread). Regarding Holy Communion… Since we understand Holy Communion to manifest and to mean that we have a “common-union” with God and with one another, that we share the same Christian Faith; only those baptized and/or chrismated in the Orthodox Church, who profess the Faith in their beliefs and thus in the actions of their daily life, who prepare themselves by arriving at church on time, saying the pre-Communion prayers, fasting from last midnight, a re- cent confession; and who have not excommunicated themselves from the Church for any reason (ie., divorce, marriage outside the Church, sex outside of marriage, receiving Holy Communion, or any other Sacrament in a non-Orthodox Church, etc...): you may draw near to the Holy Chalice “in the fear of God and in faith and in love”. The Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas meanwhile has taken the clear position that the Orthodox faithful MAY NOT receive Communion outside their churches. The reverse is likewise true. Non- Orthodox MAY NOT receive Communion in an Orthodox Church. All are welcome to venerate the Holy Cross and with deep reverence to partake of the blessed bread at the dismissal.
