Happy Feast Day!

This weekend we celebrate the parish’s patron, the Most Blessed Sacrament. I think this feast this year takes on special meaning because the has not been as available in the last months due to the virus pandemic. Our parish has a tradition of many celebrations of the Eucharist daily, so not to have public services and now only limited availability is a strange new thing for us. This new reality has cause many of us to reflect on the meaning of the Eucharist in our personal lives and I thought it might be an interesting exercise to review that the Church teaching us through the centuries about this sacrament.

Sacramentality and institution by Jesus Christ: In holding that the Eucharist is a sacrament the Church is teaching that it is an outward sign instituted by Jesus to give grace. In giving his body and blood to us under the elements of bread and wine he is sharing the gift of salvation with us. The gospels of Matthew (26), Mark (14) and Luke (22) each record for us the action of institution by Jesus. This fact is affirmed by Saint Paul in his first letter to Corinthians reminds these early that it is Jesus himself that gives us his body and blood to perpetuate the sacrifice of the Cross until his return and continue the of his death and Resurrection.

This truth of our faith was never seriously challenged until the time of the Protestant Reformation, though there were occasions when individuals proposed teaching that were in conflict with Church doctrine, for example, the correction of the Archbishop of Narbonne by Clement IV in 1267. The would take great pains to clarify what the Church held:

To begin with, the holy council teaches and openly and straightforwardly professes that in the Blessed Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, after the of the bread and wine, our Lord Jesus Christ, true God and man, is truly, really and substantially contained under the appearances of those realities [can. 1]. For, there is no contradiction in the fact that our Savior always sits at the right hand of the Father in heaven according to his natural way of existing and that, nevertheless, in his substance he is sacramentally present to us in many other places. We can hardly find words to express this way of existing: but our reason, enlightened through faith, can nevertheless recognize it as possible for God [cf. Mt 19:26; Lk 18:27], and we always believe it unhesitatingly. (Trent, Session 13, October 11, 155)

This teaching which is called (change in substance) confirms that after the consecration the species of bread and wine is seen, but the reality of the flesh and is believed. We cannot exhaust this great mystery with human words but we can embrace it in faith.

Participation in the Eucharist: In the Acts of the Apostles it is recorded that the early Church gathered for the “breaking of the bread.” The early Church Fathers exhorted and encouraged great reverence for the Eucharist and the reception of for those who were worthy. Those who were not believers were to be excluded according to Saint Justin Martyr (150AD). As the centuries progressed the frequency of the laity receiving Communion became less and less while in the monasteries the Eucharist was celebrated often, even daily in some places. During the Middle Ages so few laity went to Holy Communion that the Fourth Lateran Council (1215) required all Catholics to receive the Eucharist at least once a year during the Easter season. This rule is still in effect today but the struggle to have people participates in the Eucharist continued.

In more recent times, Pope Pius X (1904) made new strides in encouraging frequent and even daily Communion among the faithful. He lowered the age of reception to seven years and answered the main objections to this renew practice in the Church. A particular problem was the heresy of Jansenism that spread in many parts of the Church. In addressing those who came under this influence he wrote:

Away, then, with the widespread but most mischievous error of those who give it as their opinion that the reception of the Eucharist is in a manner reserved for those narrow-minded persons who rid themselves of the cares of the world in order to find rest in some kind of professedly religious life. For this gift, than which nothing can be more excellent or more conducive to salvation, is offered to all those, whatever their office or dignity may be, who wish—as everyone ought to wish—to foster in themselves that life of divine grace whose goal is the attainment of the life of the blessedness with God. (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE) June 14, 2020 There were many setbacks in the promotion of frequent New and Noteworthy Communion in addition of Jansenism. The two Great Wars, the Spanish flu, and the Great Depression created conditions that made it difficult to form the laity in a Eucharistic spirituality. Pope Pius XII with renewed effort would promote participation of the Returning to normal Sunday schedule laity in the Mass and by changing the requirement of the Eucharist fast made it easier for those who attended later Mass- Due to lower attendance at all of our Masses for the last es to receive Communion. He encouraged the laity to respond few weekends, we have eliminated the 7:00 pm Saturday (in Latin) to various parts of the Mass.
