The European Trust Crisis and the Rise of Populism
The European trust crisis and the rise of populism Yann Algan, Sergei Guriev, Elias Papaioannou and Evgenia Passari Abstract We study the implications of the Great Recession on voting for anti-establishment parties, as well as for general trust and political attitudes, using regional data across Europe. We find a strong relationship between increases in unemployment and voting for non-mainstream, especially populist, parties. Moreover, increases in unemployment go in tandem with a decline in trust in national and European political institutions, while we find only weak or no effects of unemployment on interpersonal trust. The correlation between unemployment and attitudes towards immigrants is muted, especially for their cultural impact. To advance on causality, we extract the component of increases in unemployment explained by the pre-crisis structure of the economy, in particular the share of construction in regional value added, which is strongly related both to the build-up and the end of the crisis. 3.2. INTERPELACIÓN SOBRE LAS MEDIDAS QUE VA A ADOPTAR EL GOBIERNO PARA DEFENDER LA IDENTIDAD DE NAVARRA. (Núm. exp. 670/000109) AUTORA: MARÍA CRISTINA SANZ BARRIOS (GPP) El señor vicepresidente, Sanz Alonso, da lectura al punto 3.2. El señor VICEPRESIDENTE (Sanz Alonso): Pasamos a la siguiente interpelación, del Grupo Parlamentario Popular, de la senadora Sanz Barrios, que tiene la palabra para exponerla. La señora SANZ BARRIOS: Gracias, señor presidente. Señorías, señora ministra, que Navarra deje de ser Navarra es el principal objetivo de quienes hoy gobiernan mi comunidad. Y como el Senado es la Cámara de representación territorial, hemos presentado esta interpelación para que compartamos la situación de Navarra. Desde 2015 gobierna en Navarra la señora Barkos, de Geroa Bai, con el apoyo de Podemos, Izquierda-Ezkerra y EH Bildu, imponiendo un proceso de radicalización con una hoja de ruta clara, centrada fundamentalmente en tres puntos. Punto uno: imponer el euskera como lengua de construcción nacional. El 93% de los navarros no hablan euskera, pero se impone en todos sus ámbitos: educación, administración, empresas, rotulación. El PP no tiene nada en contra del euskera, es una lengua propia de Navarra, y como tal tenemos que protegerla, pero queremos que su conocimiento se adquiera con libertad y no con la imposición. Punto dos: imponer la ikurriña. Barkos reconoce que quiere ver la ikurriña en el ayuntamiento de Pamplona. Déjenme que les recuerde el espectáculo que permitió el alcalde de Pamplona, el señor Asirón, de Bildu, al colocar en la plaza del ayuntamiento una gran ikurriña durante el conocido chupinazo que da comienzo a las fiestas de San Fermín. -
