And to Iolo, my partner in adventures. v Abstract This thesis is an extensive and interdisciplinary study of the tournaments of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519). It draws upon material, literary, narrative, and visual sources to create a holistic view of what the late medieval German tournament looked like in the court of Maximilian. Its scope includes the types of tournaments held, historical context and influences, the network of participants, the environment, the practicalities, and the symbolism. It also invesitagates Maximilian’s influence on the tournament at this time, and its role in shaping his legacy. At its heart, by examining various narrative sources, this thesis presents a chronological study of the primary tournaments in which Maximilian was involved during his lifetime. Using this study, the thesis explores the various styles of joust practiced at the tournament under Maximilian, and the arms and armour, as well as decorative elements, employed in each. Finally, it explores the role of the tournament specifically as it pertained to Maximilian’s courtly culture. This thesis makes use of an unprecedented range of sources in presenting its findings. By drawing upon extant Maximilian-related tournament arms and armour, as well as visual depictions of his tournaments, alongside both fictional and real-life accounts of these events, new information may be gathered which brings to light previously unexplored findings and draws connections which have not before been made. This research demonstrates the central role which tournaments played during Maximilian’s reign. It attempts to categorise and catalogue the numerous styles of joust which the emperor promoted by analysing their distinct features. Marquette University, [email protected] Preface While doing research in Vienna for my dissertation on relations between Church and State in Austria between the wars I became intrigued by the outward appearance of the public housing projects put up by Red Vienna at the same time. They seemed to have a martial cast to them not at all restricted to the famous Karl-Marx-Hof so, against advice that I would find nothing, I decided to see what could be found in the archives of the Stadtbauamt to tie the architecture of the program to the civil war of 1934 when the structures became the principal focus of conflict. I found no direct tie anywhere in the documents but uncovered some circumstantial evidence that might be explored in the future. One reason for publishing these notes is to save researchers from the same dead end I ran into. This is not to say no evidence was ever present because there are many missing documents in the sequence which might turn up in the future—there is more than one complaint to be found about staff members taking documents and not returning them—and the socialists who controlled the records had an interest in denying any connection both before and after the civil war. Certain kinds of records are simply not there including assessments of personnel which are in the files of the Magistratsdirektion not accessible to the public and minutes of most meetings within the various Magistrats Abteilungen connected with the program.

Giangaleazzo himself al- luded to his cities collectively as such: in the testament of 1397, produced in the first flush of his acquisition of the second diploma, he appointed his son Giovanni Maria heir to two areas – «the duchy, or rather the city and diocese of Milan», and «the duchy of the cities of Brescia, Cremona, Bergamo, Como, Lodi, Piacenza, 3 Parma, Reggio and Bobbio» . The duke would surely have been disappointed that his greatest achievement was not recognized on Bueno de Mesquita’s map. And yet the author’s terminology was more realistic than Giangaleazzo’s: it would take more than a dazzling diploma to create a new territory with a name and a rec- ognized identity.

    CODIFYING JEWS: JEWS IN AUSTRIAN TOWN CHARTERS OF THE THIRTEENTH AND FOURTEENTH CENTURIES* Birgit Wiedl Jewish settlement took place rather late in the region of today’s Austria, compared to other parts of the German-speaking area, namely the cit- ies along the Rhine.1 Until the late twelfth century, Jews appear only as merchants who are passing through the country.2 Although the number of Jews dwelling in the countryside should not be underestimated, it was the (few) urban centers that attracted the majority of Jewish settlers. Full- fledged Jewish communities developed from the early thirteenth cen- tury onwards mainly in the cities in the eastern part of today’s Austria; however, the positioning of the Jewish inhabitants within the Christian surroundings, particularly with regard to their legal standing, was to be defined in a lengthy process that had only just begun. This was partly due to the equally late development of the Austrian cities and their peculiari- ties in terms of rulership. Unlike many of their neighboring cities in today’s Germany, medieval Austrian towns never managed to liberate themselves from the strong grip of their rulers.
