Isaiah 55:11, ESV CONTENTS THE WORD IN COLOR: LETTER FROM THE VALUE OF SOURCE THE PRESIDENT LANGUAGE TRANSLATION 6 10 The worldwide shortage of full BIbles may largely be attributed to a lack of translators and consultants proficient in biblical Hebrew. Greater proficiency amongst translators and consultants allows for an increase in the number of OT translation projects while simultaneously producing higher quality translation work, which is also performed more quickly. Higher quality translations promise greater reliability, usage and longevity, enabling their service for a longer period of usage within the Church. In June it was our honor and joy to welcome our first participants to the School of Biblical Hebrew. Fifteen students from North America, Africa, South & Southeast Asia, and Oceania embarked on 8.5 months in faith to immerse themselves in biblical Hebrew so that the people groups they represent (three nations and nine distinct translation projects) may have access to the whole Word. • Hebrew Names and Name Authority in Library Catalogs by Daniel D
Hebrew Names and Name Authority in Library Catalogs by Daniel D. Stuhlman BHL, BA, MS LS, MHL In support of the Doctor of Hebrew Literature degree Jewish University of America Skokie, IL 2004 Page 1 Abstract Hebrew Names and Name Authority in Library Catalogs By Daniel D. Stuhlman, BA, BHL, MS LS, MHL Because of the differences in alphabets, entering Hebrew names and words in English works has always been a challenge. The Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) is the source for many names both in American, Jewish and European society. This work examines given names, starting with theophoric names in the Bible, then continues with other names from the Bible and contemporary sources. The list of theophoric names is comprehensive. The other names are chosen from library catalogs and the personal records of the author. Hebrew names present challenges because of the variety of pronunciations. The same name is transliterated differently for a writer in Yiddish and Hebrew, but Yiddish names are not covered in this document. Family names are included only as they relate to the study of given names. One chapter deals with why Jacob and Joseph start with “J.” Transliteration tables from many sources are included for comparison purposes. Because parents may give any name they desire, there can be no absolute rules for using Hebrew names in English (or Latin character) library catalogs. When the cataloger can not find the Latin letter version of a name that the author prefers, the cataloger uses the rules for systematic Romanization. Through the use of rules and the understanding of the history of orthography, a library research can find the materials needed.

ANNUAL REPORT 2020 2 - ANNUAL REPORT | 2020 Dear Friends, s we began 2020, none of us had any idea that our Aworld would be turned upside down by a global pandemic. These unprecedented circumstances have brought a unique set of challenges to the work of Bible translation. We have seen some of our teams displaced from their countries of assignment and relocated as they were faced with uncertainties. Yet these events have not caught God by surprise, nor have they prevented him from accomplishing all that he wants to accomplish. Wycliffe Bible Translators USA remains committed to ensuring that every person has access to Scripture in a language and format they can clearly understand. Even in this challenging season, communities are still receiving God’s Word for the first time and are being transformed. We have witnessed a tremendous outpouring of God’s Spirit around the world: reports of people accepting Christ in record numbers, translations moving forward in ways that were not planned just a few months ago, and God’s continued financial provision over our staff and projects. We rejoice in the opportunity to join God in all he is doing to draw individuals, communities and nations to himself. • Searching for the Impact of Bible Translation Among the Minorities in China by Ken Chan
Reassessing the Frontiers Searching for the Impact of Bible Translation among the Minorities in China by Ken Chan here was a time when the monolingual tribal peoples of Latin America’s many rainforests could not communicate with outsiders at all. It was obvious that they needed the gospel in their own languag- es;T to reach them, Bible translation was essential. However, the globalization of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries has led to questions about the continuing need for this sort of Bible translation. Whereas rural communi- ties were once isolated, increased ease in communication and transportation have shaped a different world. People are becoming increasingly multilingual. Minorities, in particular, face both internal and external pressures to integrate into the mainstream and speak the national or major trade languages. Accord- ing to Ethnologue: Languages of the World, a widely cited and annually updated reference work maintained by SIL International, roughly a third of the world’s 7,000 languages are now endangered.1 Historically, Bible translation has been an extensive, even at times protracted, process. Translation projects have traditionally included research (linguistic and anthropological); translations (oral and written); literacy (where implementation is viable); and scripture use (both teaching and discipling.) Is all this effort still necessary among minority peoples who are daily becoming more at home in the dominant trade languages? What, then, is the need for Bible translation now? Bible Translation and Closure Theology I want to respond initially to this strategic question of Bible translation by Ken Chan has been a member of Wycliffe Bible Translators in East exploring closure theology, an orientation that suggests that church planting and Asia since 2002.
