These details vary from genealogist’s handwritten notes to records from libraries, historical societies, county court houses, state archives and federal resources. The information from transcribed records is essential to this book, but the process opens the possibilities for errors. This material was not originally intended for a book, but rather, for my own use. When I first started reaching my family, I rarely cited sources, which is an oversight that has come back to haunt me. I have done my utmost to “give credit, when credit is due,” and placed this explanation in each of my books. A single indigent researcher has reached out, stating she did not receive full recognition for her work. Information on the Internet can be posted numerous times and it can be difficult to determine the origins. If I have not properly acknowledged a source, it was through an error in record keeping and not an intentional act. If this oversight has occurred, I sincerely apologize. My goal is to preserve the history of Friend family before it is lost to time. The history of our ancestors is not ours to own and hide away, but it is rather something to be shared with all that follow. The information for family lines was collected from direct descendants whenever possible. One might believe this connection would generate the most accurate information, but unfortunately, can be the source of family legends. For example, my mother, her mother and her great grandmother all believed we were descended form a Native American woman.
