• William Playfair Excerpt More Information
Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-85554-9 - The Commercial and Political Atlas and Statistical Breviary William Playfair Excerpt More information Introduction Sometime in 1787, just two years before France was plunged into revolu- tion and chaos, the Count of Vergennes delivered a package to the royal court of France for the attention of the king. The gift for Louis XVI had come to Vergennes from Lord Lansdowne, an English politician who was on intimate terms with many in the upper echelons of Parisian society. Vergennes was certain that Louis XVI would be very interested in the contents of the package. The gift was a book written by a young Scottish engineer and en- trepreneur who had recently moved to Paris with hopes of making his fortune. His book had been published in London during the previous year and was entitled The Commercial and Political Atlas but, unlike more conventional atlases in this era of great exploration, it contained no maps. It did contain charts, but of a new and unfamiliar variety. Louis XVI, an amateur of geography and the owner of many fine atlases, examined his acquisition with great interest. Although the charts were novel, Louis had no difficulty in grasping their purpose. Many years later, their author wrote that [the king] at once understood the charts and was highly pleased. He said they spoke all languages and were very clear and easily understood. (Playfair, 1822–3) A further indication of the king’s approval was the royal permit he granted for the establishment of a factory to work metals in Paris.

• Erasmus Darwin - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Erasmus Darwin - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Erasmus Darwin(12 December 1731 – 18 April 1802) Erasmus Darwin was an English physician who turned down George III's invitation to be a physician to the King. One of the key thinkers of the Midlands Enlightenment, he was also a natural philosopher, physiologist, abolitionist, inventor and poet. His poems included much natural history, including a statement of evolution and the relatedness of all forms of life. He was a member of the Darwin–Wedgwood family, which includes his grandsons Charles Darwin and Francis Galton. Darwin was also a founding member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham, a discussion group of pioneering industrialists and natural philosophers. Early Life Born at Elston Hall, Nottinghamshire near Newark-on-Trent, England, the youngest of seven children of Robert Darwin of Elston (12 August 1682–20 November 1754), a lawyer, and his wife Elizabeth Hill (1702–1797). The name Erasmus had been used by a number of his family and derives from his ancestor Erasmus Earle, Common Sergent of England under Oliver Cromwell. His siblings were: Robert Darwin (17 October 1724–4 November 1816) Elizabeth Darwin (15 September 1725–8 April 1800) William Alvey Darwin (3 October 1726–7 October 1783) Anne Darwin (12 November 1727–3 August 1813) Susannah Darwin (10 April 1729–29 September 1789) John Darwin, rector of Elston (28 September 1730–24 May 1805) He was educated at Chesterfield Grammar School, then later at St John's College, Cambridge. He obtained his medical education at the University of Edinburgh Medical School.

• George Abbot 1562-1633 Archbishop of Canterbury
English Book Owners in the Seventeenth Century: A Work in Progress Listing How much do we really know about patterns and impacts of book ownership in Britain in the seventeenth century? How well equipped are we to answer questions such as the following?: What was a typical private library, in terms of size and content, in the seventeenth century? How does the answer to that question vary according to occupation, social status, etc? How does the answer vary over time? – how different are ownership patterns in the middle of the century from those of the beginning, and how different are they again at the end? Having sound answers to these questions will contribute significantly to our understanding of print culture and the history of the book more widely during this period. Our current state of knowledge is both imperfect, and fragmented. There is no directory or comprehensive reference source on seventeenth-century British book owners, although there are numerous studies of individual collectors. There are well-known names who are regularly cited in this context – Cotton, Dering, Pepys – and accepted wisdom as to collections which were particularly interesting or outstanding, but there is much in this area that deserves to be challenged. Private Libraries in Renaissance England and Books in Cambridge Inventories have developed a more comprehensive approach to a particular (academic) kind of owner, but they are largely focused on the sixteenth century. Sears Jayne, Library Catalogues of the English Renaissance, extends coverage to 1640, based on book lists found in a variety of manuscript sources. The Cambridge History of Libraries in Britain and Ireland (2006) contains much relevant information in this field, summarising existing scholarship, and references to this have been included in individual entries below where appropriate.

MAINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRIZE ESSAY 1977 The Smuggling Career of William King by Alan S. Taylor One of the most fascinating controversies to emerge from Maine’s role in the War of 1812 is whether William King, the leader of Maine’s Democratic-Republican party and the state’s first governor, illegally traded with the British. Throughout King’s political career, charges were hurled that many of his vessels had operated in violation of the revenue laws. These charges remained unsubstantiated rumors spread by his Federalist political opponents until 1824 when two of his estranged political proteges, Benjamin Ames and Joseph F. Wingate, Jr., anonymously published The Disclosure No. 1: Documents Relating to Violations and Evasions of the Laws During the Commercial Restrictions and Late War With Great Britain, etc., a collection of letters and depositions intended to prove that King and his good friend, Mark Langdon Hill, were indeed guilty of smuggling.
