Son of José Caetano de Morais Neto and Aparecida Célia Rovere de Morais, he started studies in Tabatinga, São Paulo, where he finished basic level education in 2004. In 2005, He enrolled at Colégio Técnico Agrícola “José Bonifácio” of Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias de Jaboticabal, Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP/FCAV), in Jaboticabal, São Paulo, where he finished high school and the course of Agricultural Technician in 2007. In 2008, he began studying biological sciences at the same university and graduated in January 2013. In March 2013, he initiated a Masters at the Graduate Program in Sciences (Entomology) in Escola Superior de Agricultura “Luiz de Queiroz”, of Universidade de São Paulo (ESALQ/USP), where he was funded by Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and developed his dissertation about integrated pest management, advised by Prof. Dr. Pedro Takao Yamamoto. Matheus obtained his Masters degree in June 2015 and, in August 2015, he started his doctorate in the Graduate Program in Agronomy (Agricultural Entomology) at UNESP/FCAV, advised by Prof. Dr. Daniel Júnior de Andrade, and funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and CAPES. e-mail: [email protected] I DEDICATE To my parents Aparecida Célia Rovere de Morais and José Caetano de Morais Neto. It is the most important mite species attacking tree fruits in humid regions of North America. Bristle-like mouthparts of this mite species pierce the leaf cell wall and ingestion of their contents including chlorophyll causes bronzing injury to leaves. Heavy mite feeding early in the season (late Jun and July) reduce tree growth and yield as well as the fruit bud formation, thereby reduce yields the following year. Biological control of this pest species by predators has been a cornerstone of IPM. Phytoseiid mite, Neoseiulus fallacis (Garman) is the most effective predator mite in Michigan apple orchards and provides mid- and late-season biological control of European red mites. Achieving full potential of biological control in tree fruit has been challenging due to the periodic sprays of broad-spectrum insecticides. There have been cases of mite flaring reported by farmers in relation to the reduced-risk (RR) insecticides that were registered in commercial apple production in the past ten years. These insecticides are often used in fruit trees to control key direct pests such as the codling moth.

For N. barkeri and P. kadii, the development was faster, while the reproduction was higher in N. barkeri and A. largoensis than for P. kadii. Survival of immatures of T. swirskii and C. negevi was low on eggs of B. zonata and all failed to develop be- yond the protonymphal stage. A total of 35.4, 31.2 and 19.6 eggs per female, respectively, were obtained when N. barkeri, A. lar- goensis and P. kadii were fed B. zonata eggs. A diet of the peach fruit fly eggs provided the longest female longevity and highest mean total fecundity, which resulted in the highest net reproductive rate (Ro=34.61 and 32.78) and doubling time (DT=1.53 and 1.60) for N.

Yamamoto' RESUMO Predação de Euseius citnfolius Denmark & Muma Sobre o Ácaro da Leprose dos Citros Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Phytoseiidae: Tenuipalpidae) Estimou-se a atividade predatória de liuselus citrfolius Denmark & Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) sobre o ácaro da leprose dos citros, Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae). As larvas, ninfas e fêmeas adultas foram semelhantes e superiores na atividade predatória sobre o ácaro da leprose que os machos adultos. Dentre os estágios imaturos, a larva foi a mais atacada pelo predador, e o aumento da relação predador: presa resultou em níveis maiores de prepdação. A presença da verrugose nos frutos causou uma diminuição significativa na predação de E. cilrifolius sobre B. phoenicis. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Arthropoda, controle biológico, atividade predatória, relação predador-presa, verrugose. ABSTRAC The predatory activity ofEuseius citrifolius Denmark & Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) upon the citrus leprosis mite, Brevipalpus phoeni cis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) was studied. It was found that the phytoseiid larva, nymph and adult female, showed similar leveis of predation, and were better predators than adult males. Among the immature stages of prey, the larval stage was the most ftequently consumed by ali life stages ofthe predator. lncreasi ng predator: prey ratios resulted in higher predation rates. The presence ofcitrus scab disease on the fruits caused a signiflcant decrease in predation of B. phoenicis by E. citrifolius. The association between domatia-bearing plants and mites has been proposed to be mutualistic, and has been found to be important in species of economic value, such as grapes, cotton, avocado and coffee. This is because leaf domatia affect the distribution, diversity and abundance of predatory and mycophagous mites found on the leaf surface. As a result, plants are thought to benefit from increased defence against pathogens and small arthropod herbivores. This study assesses the relative diversity and composition of mites on an economically important plant host (Coffea aribica) in comparison to mites found in a neighbouring indigenous forest in South Africa. Our results showed that the coffee plantations were associated with only predatory mites, some of which are indigenous to South Africa. This indicates that coffee plantations are able to be successfully colonised by indigenous beneficial mites.
