Non-performance competitions are: a Flute Choir Composition Competition, Graduate Research, and Newly Published Music. Performance competitions are: Young Artist Competition, High School Soloist Competition, Convention Performers Competition, Flute Choirs Competitions, Professional, Collegiate, High School, and Jazz Flute Big Band, and a Masterclass Competition. These competitions provide opportunities for flutists ranging from amateurs to professionals. University/college flute choirs perform original manuscripts, arrangements and transcriptions, as well as the commissioned pieces, frequently at conventions, thus expanding substantially the repertoire for flute choir. The purpose of my work is to document commissioned repertoire for flute choir, music for five or more flutes, presented by university/college flute choirs and NFA sponsored flute choirs at NFA annual conventions. Composer, title, premiere and publication information, conductor, performer and instrumentation will be included in an annotated bibliography format. A brief history of the flute choir and its repertoire, as well as a history of NFA-sponsored flute choir (1973–2012) will be included in this document.

Apart from standard unaccompanied works by Tōru Takemitsu and Kazuo Fukushima, other Japanese flute compositions have yet to establish a permanent place in the standard flute repertoire. The purpose of this document is to broaden awareness of Japanese flute compositions through the discussion, analysis, and evaluation of substantial flute sonatas by three important Japanese composers: Ikuma Dan (1924-2001), Hikaru Hayashi (1931- 2012), and Akira Tamba (b. 1932). A brief history of traditional Japanese flute music, a summary of Western influences in Japan’s musical development, and an overview of major Japanese flute compositions are included to provide historical and musical context for the composers and works in this document. Discussions on each composer’s background, flute works, and compositional style inform the following flute sonata analyses, which reveal the unique musical language and characteristics that qualify each work for inclusion in the standard flute repertoire. These analyses intend to increase awareness and performance of other Japanese flute compositions specifically and lesser- known repertoire generally.

Program Notes: Butterfly was inspired by a remarkable series of events that happened to family friends of mine. On the afternoon of July 10, 2007, Mr. Daniel Southerland was walking with a friend in crowded, hot downtown Washington, D.C., when a Red Admiral butterfly landed on his shoulder. It remained there for many hours, through lunch, photographs, and a taxi ride home, and seemed to make itself at home in the Southerland family’s yard. For thirty-seven consecutive days, the butterfly that Dan dubbed “Poppy” remained with the Southerlands, and came out nearly every evening to greet Dan and his family. He sometimes brought other Red Admirals along to “show off their flying abilities,” and sometimes landed on Dan’s head or even the rim of his glasses. Poppy’s behavior was so unusual, and so friendly, that the entire Southerland family became very attached to him. After Poppy’s final farewell appearance on August 15, 2007, Dan wrote about his experience for the Washington Post Magazine, which published his article on August 24, 2008, and advertised the article with the title page headline, “A near-miraculous encounter with a butterfly changes a man’s life.” Dan has since received poems, letters and even hand towels embroidered with Red Admiral butterflies from people inspired by his story.

Currently a lecturer at Monash and Melbourne Universities, freelance soloist and educator of the flute and low flutes. Peter was a founding member of the Los Angeles Flute Quartet and has been a recording artist for various Hollywood soundtracks(Star Trek, Looney Tunes, Timeline) and can be heard on various independent recordings. As an Orchestral player, performances have included engagements with the the Hollywood Studio Orchestra, ANAM Orchestra, Pasadena and Thousand Oaks Symphonies, the Mannes Camerata, Arizona Opera Company, San Bernardino Pops and the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra As a chamber musician, he recently premiered Bruce Lawrence's 'Lyric Concerto,' for Contrabass flute and strings with the Melbourne Musicians Society. As a specialist of the Low Flutes, Sheridan has promoted commissioned music for the Alto, Bass, Contrabass and Sub- Contrabass flutes. He also has a most unique Hyperbass flute, which plays lower than the concert piano (C-0). He actively performs and lectures on all these instruments both as a soloist and educator, and is a member of the NFA 'Low Flutes' Committee. Peter has presented Masterclasses throughout the world and received numerous awards for his teaching and performance.
