570793 bk FF 9/18/07 11:22 AM Page 8 Roderick Elms Roderick Elms studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and appears in concerts, recordings and broadcasts with most of Britain’s major orchestras, both as a principal keyboard player and soloist. He appears regularly with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 as well as for Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Foreign tours have taken him round most of Europe as well as to South Africa, the United States and Canada, Israel and the Far East. His solo recordings with the RPO include Hubert Bath’s Cornish Rhapsody, the Spellbound and Warsaw concertos and da Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain. Other recordings include Frank Martin’s Ballade for Piano and Orchestra with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and The Dream of Olwen and other music of Charles Williams with the BBC Concert Orchestra on the Marco Polo label. In lighter vein, he has made contributions to albums by José Carreras (Pure Passion) and Tony Henry (Modern Arias). As organist, he has recorded an extensive list for EMI and Chandos which includes all the major oratorios of Elgar and the award- winning recording of Britten’s War Requiem with the London Photo: Joanna Smith Symphony Orchestra. He has contributed to many film soundtracks including Aliens, Dangerous Liaisons, Shadowlands, Philadelphia and the epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He caused something of a stir in the 2003 Proms when, with friend and colleague Alistair Young, he appeared on live television -

Coming from a Jewish, German and Dutch family, my grandparents (survivors of the Holocaust), had to leave Europe looking for the safety of a new life in South Africa. In turn, my parents left South Africa in the early 1970s looking for a more welcoming country in which to bring up children, and to get away from the state-run racism which afflicted the nation. There was no more cosmopolitan and ‘happening’ place than London and I feel truly blessed to have been able to make my life as a first generation Brit. I grew up in a country which was welcoming of all cultures, I never experienced racism growing up in the UK, it was truly a haven. However, in the current global climate of xenophobia and close-the-borders mentality, racism has raised its ugly head first-hand to me – I find myself suddenly forced to ask, where do I really belong? In particular, I find myself reflecting on my grandfather, Walter Liebeck (1904 – 1987). -

Martin Owen horn | corno Martin Owen is widely regarded as one of Europe's leading horn players, appearing as soloist and chamber musician at some of the leading music festivals around the world. Martin currently holds the position of Principal Horn at the BBC Symphony Orchestra, having served as Principal Horn of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for ten years, and during the 2012/13 seasons, Martin was Principal Horn of the Berliner Philharmoniker on a temporary contract. He is also Principal Horn in California based chamber music ensemble Camerata Pacifca and the UK’s Britten Sinfonia and Hafner Ensemble. Recent highlights include performances of concertos by Mozart, Richard Strauss, Schumann, Messiaen, Britten, Elliott Carter, Oliver Knussen and Thea Musgrave with orchestras including the BBC Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, Orquesta Nacional de Espana, The Halle, New World Symphony, Bucharest Philharmonic and Ensemble Modern. Other highlights include Strauss: 2nd Horn Concerto with the Aalborg Symfoniorkester and Baltic Philharmonic, as well as performances with the Camerata Pacifca. In 2006, Martin Owen also gave the world premiere of Malcolm Arnold's recently discovered Burlesque with the Royal Philharmonic in the composer’s home town of Northampton, and, in 2007, made his solo debut at the BBC Proms performing Schumann's Konzertstuck with the BBC Philharmonic. Martin returned to the Proms as soloist in 2009 in a highly acclaimed performance of Oliver Knussen's Horn Concerto with the BBC Symphony conducted by the composer, broadcast live on BBC television and radio. In 2008, he made his Barbican debut in the London premiere of Elliott Carter's Horn Concerto with the BBCSymphony/Knussen as part of Carter's 100th birthday celebrations (the performance was released by Bridge Records in March 2010). -

Milder had been the first Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio. Schubert was only eight years old when that première took place, but some five years later Spaun took him to see Milder in Iphigénie en Tauride. It was in Gluck that her dramatic talents were displayed at their most striking, and Spaun later described Schubert as having been overwhelmed by the experience: ‘He said that Milder’s voice pierced his heart, and Iphigenia’s aria with female chorus in the second Act was the most beautiful thing he had ever heard.’ Within a decade Schubert’s own songs were sufficiently well known for Anna Milder to make contact with him. -

Pianist Nicolas Hodges performs Messiaen’s intrepid Des canyons aux étoiles at the BBC Proms Sunday 28 July, 19:30 Royal Albert Hall Messiaen Des canyons aux étoiles Nicolas Hodges piano BBC Symphony Orchestra Sakari Oramo conductor “He plays the classics as if they were written yesterday, and what was written yesterday as if it were already a classic.” Tempo Magazine Nicolas Hodges returns to the Proms to perform Messiaen’s intrepid Des canyons aux étoiles at the BBC Proms on 28 July with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo. Mark Swed (LA Times) recently described Hodges as “one of the leading performers of advanced European music … He makes seemingly unintelligible music speak for itself … and is a pianist with a flabbergasting technique and instantly engaging musicality.” A vast 90-minute sonic meditation, Olivier Messiaen’s singular Des canyons aux étoiles (1974) was commissioned by Alice Tully to celebrate the bicentenary of the United States Declaration of Independence. Twelve movements take listeners on a journey from the deserts of Utah to the stars, inspired by the colourful Bryce Canyon, which stimulated the composer’s sound- colour synaesthesia. Messiaen includes the calls of over 80 species of birds from Utah, Arizona, and beyond. Hodges appears with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sakari Oramo. Nicolas Hodges first performed at the BBC Proms as a 12-year-old chorister with Christ Church Cathedral Choir performing Penderecki’s St Luke’s Passion. He last championed Messiaen at the festival through his Trois petites liturgies de la Présence Divine with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 2005. -

2018/19 Season April - July 2019 2 • Join us for a fascinating celebration on 8 June; leading oboist Nicholas Daniel consecrates an entire day to an instrument relatively rarely featured in chamber works but whose contemporary repertoire he has expanded significantly with commissions from leading composers. In 2016, Igor Levit simultaneously won (among others) Director’s two Gramophone Awards – the Instrumental Award as well as Recording of the Year – for his three-CD set of variations, the works he will revisit with us in May Introduction alongside Ronald Stevenson’s Passacaglia on DSCH. The American jazz pianist, composer and multimedia performer, Jason Moran, has recorded some 40 albums to date, as a soloist and member of numerous ensembles. Presenting original compositions and jazz standards, he will announce his eclectic May programme from the stage. Founded as long ago as 1975 in Budapest but resident at the University of Boulder, Colorado, since 1983, the long-revered Takács Quartet has maintained a close connection with Wigmore Hall as Associate Artists. They perform two concerts in May including works by Elgar, Haydn, Bartók and Amy Beach. On 10 and 14 May, Sir András Schiff, unquestionably one of today’s leading Bach interpreters, takes on a group of the composer’s keyboard suites published between 1726 and 1730. Students from the Royal Academy of Music’s Song Circle present a recital in April devoted entirely to the songs of Carl Loewe. Loewe performed his songs throughout Germany to great acclaim and was known as the North German Schubert, composing over 500 songs in a great variety of genres. -
