WELCOME

3 CO-CHAIRMEN’S WELCOME

We are proud to welcome you to the summer and early autumn programme of the European Union Youth Orchestra. After the successful inauguration of our new Spring Residency in Ferrara we return to our summer base and colleagues in Grafenegg. Our partnership with them has played a crucial part in consolidating and developing the EUYO. This development is increasingly recognised as two recent awards testify. In April the Orchestra was given the 2018 Cultural Diplomat of the Year Award in Abu Dhabi, evidence if needed of the way that the Orchestra carries European cultural values beyond the borders of the continent. It is no boast to see the EUYO as roving representative of the European Union. In June, the EUYO was awarded the European Culture Prize TAURUS in Dresden, receiving and performing in the staggering surroundings of the city’s historic Frauenkirche. No orchestra rests on its laurels and awards. The EUYO certainly will not. It exists for music, for partnership, for excellence, for Europe. These performances throughout the summer and early autumn of 2018 will demonstrate its commitment to these ideals. Our deepest thanks go to all those who share our ideals and teach, coach, conduct, play with, organise, manage, nurture, and bring to a peak these brilliant young players. We place on record our admiration for and love of the visionary founder of the EUYO, Joy Bryer. Our gratitude for the selfless and skilful leadership of the CEO, Marshall Marcus, goes beyond mere words. To every member of the audience, we believe you are not only hearing the greatest music thrillingly played but are part of an expression of a cultural and idealistic vision. Thank you for being part of it. Sir John Tusa & Ian Stoutzker CBE O-CHAIRMEN

I am so proud to be ‘The Mother’ to over 5000 young musicians – we even have grandchildren! We truly are the greatest musical family in Europe. The future of Europe must belong to its youth – let us champion them in every way and recognise that culture, education and international understanding are an essential part of our lives and our humanity. I am extremely grateful for the inspired and dedicated leadership of our co-chairs and our CEO Marshall Marcus for insuring our future and creating an exciting new world for our future leaders in .

Grafenegg, our Principal Venue Partner, is a welcoming home to the EUYO every year during our summer tour, offering exceptional spaces for rehearsals, workshops, laboratories, and intimate and also large-scale performances for our young musicians, as part of our annual Summer Residency. © Alexander Haiden

Grafenegg is delighted to welcome the EUYO back to its ‘Summer Home’ in Lower Austria. Our collaboration with this, the only truly European youth orchestra, is not only a central aspect of Campus Grafenegg but also a source of inspiration for all the concerts we put on here. This spring, the Orchestra’s musicians were the first ever guests of the new Grafenegg Cottages, which are situated right next to the rehearsal and concert spaces. They experienced a foretaste of their busy summer here at the Wolkenturm, the Auditorium and Schloss Grafenegg. Another premiere will be the first performance by the EUYO together with our Artistic Director Rudolf Buchbinder on 23 August 2018. We wish the Orchestra a productive working phase in ideal rehearsal facilities and accommodation! We are also pleased that we have been able to re-establish our partnership with the EUYO on a new basis and make a substantial contribution to the Orchestra’s work by extending the partnership by another three years. From now until 2020 we can therefore look forward to a wealth of rehearsals, concerts, Music Labs, Music Galleries and much more besides AFENEGG

GR with the best young musicians from all over Europe.

ianissimo FERRARA WELCOME

Ferrara Musica is the EUYO’s Principal Italian Residency Partner which includes two major residencies each year between 2018 and 2020, with formal and informal symphonic and chamber performances taking place. The residency will become the core of the concert season Ferrara Musica which honours the spiritual legacy of Claudio Abbado through the celebration of musical education, performance and learning.

On behalf of the city of Ferrara it is with great pleasure that we welcome the European Union Youth Orchestra, even more so now that Ferrara is officially its home. This residence is a symbol of the renewed desire to build a Europe of stronger pillars, rooted in the culture and enthusiasm of young people. This time the arrival of the Orchestra, on Saturday 25th August, will coincide with one of the most significant moments of our summer: Ferrara Buskers Festival. It will be wonderful to see how these two events will interact in the name of music, a language that in hard times like the ones we are experiencing, is increasingly important, because it develops creativity rather than suffocates it; it unites and does not divide. Just as EUYO’s musicians, who come from different countries feel part of a common project and are so closely united. The residence of this Orchestra in Ferrara is like coming full circle. Our city had an unspoken promise towards Claudio Abbado – founder of both Ferrara Musica and EUYO: to carry out the project and to direct the focus on the young people who he had helped throughout his life. A commitment that also has the fundamental ARA objective to maintain the quality of the musical culture in our city. FERR

10 BOLZANO WELCOME

Bolzano Festival Bozen is an annual summer residency for the EUYO. Founded by Claudio Abbado, the EUYO’s Founding Music Director and Director from 1976–1994, the Festival is a project of the Municipality of Bolzano and hosts a range of performances and workshops from July to the beginning of September in the city of Bolzano, in northern Italy.

I am proud as Mayor and as a citizen of Bolzano of the collaboration of our city with the European Union Youth Orchestra: 120 young musicians, coming from all European countries with different musical cultures, breaking boundaries and coming together through talent and love of music. The concerts of the EUYO embody European ideals and their music is Europe in action. Europe is not just mere imagination or an arid speculation: through these young people we discover how the concept of Europe can become tangible. The EUYO is an “ensemble” that like Europe cannot and must not stop: with the passing of time, it is enriched and renewed thanks to the contribution of its most vital talents. Bolzano is pleased to welcome this European ambassador, which becomes year after year a reality with deeper and stronger roots. Renzo Caramaschi

All you need to know about the CELESTA – CELESTE – CEL …

Everyone knows its „heavenly“ sound but few really know the instrument. The Celesta was invented by Victor Mustel in Paris in the year 1886. Tchaikovsky, fascinated by the unique overtone-rich sound, wrote the famous Celesta solo for the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy in his Nutcracker. The world premiere of at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1892 led to the internati onal breakthrough of the instrument. The „heavenly“ sound of the Celesta has enchanted the enti re world of music ever since and the instrument became a fi xture of orchestral music.

The Celesta combines elements of a keyboard and a percussion instrument in a very specifi c way. Its disti nct The Celesta-Keyboard sound is generated by the following mechanical acti on principles:

• The felt hammer is set in moti on by pressing the key.

• The felt hammer strikes the steel sound plate from above.

• The sound plate is placed above a wooden resonator.

Only the Celesta acti on can produce the typical Celesta sound. In his patent Victor Mustel explicitly excludes the use of a piano or grand-piano acti on as sound-generati ng system of the Celesta. According to this defi niti on, a Glockenspiel with a piano or grand-piano acti on (Yamaha/Kolberg) is not a Celesta. The Celesta Acti on Since the Mustel company stopped their Celesta producti on decades ago, the German company Schiedmayer is the only manufacturer of the Celesta worldwide. Schiedmayer has a traditi on in building keyboard instruments for almost 300 years and started with the Celesta producti on as early as 1890. The Schiedmayer Celesta manufacture is located today in Wendlingen near Stutt gart in southern Germany.
