Weather Broadcasts and Maritime Safety Information Her Majesty’s Coastguard is responsible in the UK for the broadcast of marine weather forecasts and Maritime Safety Information (MSI) on NAVTEX, VHF and MF and for providing the Radio Medical Advice Link Call (MEDILINK) Service. COVERAGE The primary method of disseminating MSI is by NAVTEX which provides coverage out to 270 miles. This service is complemented by radio telephony broadcasts. HM Coastguard provides VHF coverage out to 30 miles and MF coverage out to 150 miles using its network of remote aerial sites around the UK coast. www.naturalengland.org.uk Chapter 4: Littlestone-on-Sea Car Park to Dymchurch Redoubt Coastal Access: Camber to Folkestone - Natural England’s Proposals Part 4.1: Introduction Start Point: Littlestone-on-Sea Car Park (grid reference: TR 08333 23911) End Point: Dymchurch Redoubt (grid reference: TR 12592 31744 ) Relevant Maps: 4a to 4g Understanding the proposals and accompanying maps: The Trail: 4.1.1 Follows existing walked routes, including public rights of way and Cycleways, throughout. 4.1.2 Follows the coastline closely and maintains good sea views. 4.1.3 Is aligned on a sea defence wall at the northern end of Littlestone-on-Sea, through St Mary’s Bay to Dymchurch Redoubt.. 4.1.4 In certain tide and weather conditions, it may be necessary to close flood gates along a 5km stretch of sea wall between Littlestone-on-Sea and Dymchurch to prevent flooding inland. Other routes are proposed landward of the seawall for such times when the trail is unavailable. See parts 4.1.10 to 4.1.12 for details. 4.1.5 This part of the coast includes the following sites, designated for nature conservation or heritage preservation (See map C of the Overview): Dungeness Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its geological /wildlife interest Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay Potential Special Protected Area (pSPA) Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay Proposed Ramsar Site (pRamsar) We have assessed the potential impacts of access along the proposed route (and over the associated spreading room described below) on the features for which the affected land is designated and on any which are protected in their own right. -

The MOD has the largest historic estate within Government and this report provides commentary on its size, diversity, condition and management. This 5th biennial report covers the financial years 11/12 and 12/13 and fulfils the requirement under the DCMS/ English Heritage (EH) Protocol for the Care of the Government Estate 2009 and Scottish Ministers Scottish Historic Environment Policy (SHEP). It summarises the work and issues arising in the past two years and progress achieved both in the UK and overseas. 2. SC1: South Coast Shoreline
Overall Character THE WEST SUSSEX LANDSCAPE Land Management Guidelines This long narrow Character Area extends between West Wittering and Shoreham and comprises the majority of the West Sussex coastline. It is a distinctive low, open and exposed landscape which has an overriding visual and physical association with the sea. Its wide and gently curved bays are further defined by the protruding shingle headland of Selsey Bill, and the chalk headland of Beachy Head in neighbouring East Sussex. This is a dynamic character area whose key characteristics are linked by coastal evolution, weather and tides. Sheet SC1 The character varies considerably according to weather condition and seasons. Key Characteristics G Relatively narrow undeveloped sections of coastline behind beaches. Bounded by low South Coast growing scant vegetation and small areas of wind-sculpted scrub and trees. Often G To the east of Selsey Bill, mainly shingle banks with bands of sand and mud exposed at providing separation of urban areas. Here an unexpected collection of FCentaur Tanks and armoured Caterpillar Bulldozers lies along a north / south line in a shallow scour. Once the site has been located, it’s best to drop the shot in the middle to give access to all of the main features. One trick to help you stay on-site is to remember that the vehicles are in a 1-2m Tanks and deep scour and if you find yourself getting slightly shallower you are heading in the wrong direction. There are two Centaur CS Mk IV tanks, DEPTH: 18-22m two armoured D7 bulldozers, the VISIBILITY: 1-6+m remains of a 4x4 vehicle, a large anchor, two propellers, high explosive Bulldozers ammunition and other wreckage. Often shrouded by a large shoal of bib, the four main vehicles are about 5m About 20m down off Selsey Bill in Sussex lies an impressive collection apart so you should be able to see to the next vehicle in reasonable of armoured fighting vehicles. -

ENGLISH COAST DEFENCES GEORGE CLINCH PART I ENGLISH COAST DEFENCES PREHISTORIC CAMPS Round the coast of England there are many prehistoric earthworks of great extent and strength. These fall generally under the heads of hill-top fortresses and promontory camps. The works comprised under the former head are so arranged as to take the greatest possible advantage of natural hill-tops, often of large size. On the line where the comparatively level top developed into a more or less precipitous slope a deep ditch was dug, and the earth so removed was in most cases thrown outwards so as to form a rampart which increased the original difficulties of the sloping hill-side. The latter type of earthwork, called promontory camps from their natural conformation, were strengthened by the digging of a deep ditch, so as to cut off the promontory from the main table-land from which it projected, and in some cases the sides of the camp were made more precipitous by artificial scarping. An examination of these types of earthworks leads to the conclusion that they were probably tribal enclosures for the safe-guarding of cattle, etc.; that, strictly speaking, they were not military works at all, and, in any case, had no relation to national defence against enemies coming over-sea. One finds in different parts of the country a prevalent tradition that the Romans occupied the more ancient British hill-top strongholds, and the name “Caesar‟s Camp” is popularly applied to many of them. If such an occupation really took place it was, in all probability, only of a temporary character. -

Local communities now have a greater influence over the way their neighbourhoods are developed, placing community need at its heart, along with co-operation with developers and local authorities. Botolph's Bridge, Hythe Redoubt, Hythe Ranges West And
Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 G (Botolph’s Bridge, Hythe Redoubt, Hythe Ranges West, and Nickolls Quarry) The tetrad TR13 G contains a number of major local hotspots, with Nickolls Quarry, the Botolph’s Bridge area and part of Hythe Ranges located within its boundaries. As a consequence the tetrad has the richest diversity of breeding birds in the local area, with 71 species having a status of at least possible in the latest BTO Atlas survey. It also had the highest total of species (125) in the winter Atlas survey. Sadly a major housing development is now in progress at the Nickolls Quarry site and much of the best habitat is now being disturbed or lost. Nickolls Quarry has been watched since the late 1940s, though early coverage was patchy, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. As a working quarry the site has undergone significant changes during this time, expanding from two small pits to a much larger area of open water, some of which has since been backfilled. During 2001 to 2004 a series of shallow pools were created which proved particularly attractive to waders. The lake is easily the largest area of open water in the local area and so remains one of the best areas for wildfowl, particularly during cold weather, for example in December 2010 when there were peak counts of 170 Wigeon, 107 Coot, 104 Pochard, 100 Teal, 53 Tufted Duck, 34 Gadwall, 18 Mute Swan, 12 Pintail, 10 Bewick’s Swan, 8 Shoveler, singles of Goldeneye and Goosander, and 300 White-fronted Geese flew over. -

To counteract falling beach levels, the Environment Agency and local authorities are increasingly resorting to “topping-up” the beaches with additional sand and shingle. Several terms are currently employed to refer to the artificial provision of extra beach material, but there is disagreement about their precise definition. For the purpose of this report, beach nourishment (or beach replenishment) is defined as the supply of material that has been dredged from the seabed or extracted from inland sand and gravel pits. CHILHAM: STOUR VALLEY Location map: CHILHAMCHARACTER AREA DESCRIPTION North of Bilting, the Stour Valley becomes increasingly enclosed. The rolling sides of the valley support large arable fields in the east, while sweeps of parkland belonging to Godmersham Park and Chilham Castle cover most of the western slopes. On either side of the valley, dense woodland dominate the skyline and a number of substantial shaws and plantations on the lower slopes reflect the importance of game cover in this area. On the valley bottom, the river is picked out in places by waterside alders and occasional willows. The railway line is obscured for much of its length by trees. STOUR VALLEY Chilham lies within the larger character area of the Stour Valley within the Kent Downs AONB. The Great Stour is the most easterly of the three rivers cutting through the Downs. Like the Darent and the Medway, it too provided an early access route into the heart of Kent and formed an ancient focus for settlement. Today the Stour Valley is highly valued for the quality of its landscape, especially by the considerable numbers of walkers who follow the Stour Valley Walk or the North Downs Way National Trail. Despite its proximity to both Canterbury and Ashford, the Stour Valley retains a strong rural identity. Enclosed by steep scarps on both sides, with dense woodlands on the upper slopes, the valley is dominated by intensively farmed arable fields interspersed by broad sweeps of mature parkland. Unusually, there are no electricity pylons cluttering the views across the valley. North of Bilting, the river flows through a narrow, pastoral floodplain, dotted with trees such as willow and alder and drained by small ditches. -

For this reason, the Thames, Medway and Swale estuaries and marshes comprise of three Special Protection Areas (SPAs). All of these are also listed as Ramsar sites due to the international significance of the wetland habitats. Significant development is planned for north Kent with growing demand for new homes to accommodate the increasing population in the administrative areas of Canterbury, Dartford, Gravesham, Medway and Swale. With additional homes, the number of recreational visitors to the coastal areas will increase. Research has shown that the increasing numbers of visitors will have a negative impact on designated bird species. A strategic approach is required to deliver measures to mitigate any disturbance to birds caused by increased recreational activity. The
