The polls, which could now be held sooner than expected, will cer tainly test every party's resolve and all the bickering can only be expect ed to come to a head as the day of reckoning arrives. Virtually all state Barisan parties have their own issues to deal with — some more than others but the situation seems to be most dire in SPDP. Leaders and exleaders of the party have no qualms about fighting their battles publicly and what's more, doing it all in the name of Barisan Nasional. Problems in the party started after party president Tan Sri William Mawan replaced Datuk Sylvester Entri Muran as the secretarygeneral during a meeting in February 2010. Entri walked out of the meeting fol lowed by four other SPDP elected representatives who would eventu ally call themselves the "Group of Five (G5).". After much back and forth, Mawan finally decided to sack the five end of last year, leaving them with no rea son to hold back their frustrations. Two of SPDP's four parliamentary seats that could suffer as a result of the ongoing SPDPG5 quarrel are Baram and Mas Gading. The party has been in opposition since the formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. Although it has consistently won a significant percentage of votes at general elections, it has never been able to win enough seats to form a government, either at the federal or state levels. The voting pattern for the DAP in Peninsular Malaysia is marked by two features. First, most of its votes come from the non-Malay population, i.e. from the Malaysian Chinese and Indian voters. Secondly, it regularly outperforms, in terms of number of votes, the Chinese-based parties in the ruling Bansan Nasional (BN) or National Front coalition - Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Malaysian People's Movement) and the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA). Whatever successes the DAP enjoys in Peninsular Malaysia is not repeated in the East Malaysian States of Sabah and Sarawak, situated on the island of Borneo and divided from the Peninsular by the South China Sea. Although both states have elected several DAP candidates to the federal parliament, they are defeated at successive state elections held in the two Bornean states.

  • SPDP Holds First Meeting Headed by Mawan
14/11/2002 SPDP holds first meeting headed by Mawan KUCHING, Wed. - The newly-formed Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party held its first meeting-cum-briefing here today attended by representatives from 55 former divisions of the deregistered Sarawak National Party (SNAP). SPDP pro-tem president Datuk William Mawan Ikom described the meeting as a `new era' after eight months of leadership crisis in SNAP which climaxed in its deregistration on Nov 5 and the registration of SPDP three days later. "This meeting will also chart the direction where we will go and within the Barisan Nasional context," he said in his opening speech. He said SPDP members needed to change in tandem with time and political situation. Mawan, who is the State Environment and Public Health Minister, said what happened during the meeting of the SNAP central executive committee on April 20, 2002, was the tip of the iceberg. (At that meeting, he and eight other party leaders walked out before voting took place to sack Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing from SNAP). "What happened in SNAP has become history, but its spirit and struggle must go on through SPDP," he said, adding that the formation of SPDP was a way of rehabilitating SNAP members as indicated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad when commenting on its deregistration recently. He said the meeting today was to endorse the steps that had been taken by the party leaders as well as to show the party's appreciation to Dr Mahathir, his deputy Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud for their sympathetic attitude to former SNAP members.

  • S'wak DAP Pours Scorn on Tiong's Appointment Malaysiakini.Com
S'wak DAP pours scorn on Tiong’s appointment MalaysiaKini.com Jan 7, 2014 Sarawak DAP today poured scorn on the appointment of Tiong King Sing as a special envoy to East Asia by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, accusing his government of losing ‘purpose and direction’ and of wasteful spending. “Why did Najib create a special post for Tiong? “After all there are ministries which can look after foreign affairs, labour, tourism, trade and immigration. “And what special skills Tiong has that these ministers cannot offer?” asked Sarawak DAP Chief, Chong Chieng Jen (left), who is also the MP for Bandar Kuching. Tiong is the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party’s (SPDP) MP for Bintulu. SPDP had expressed displeasure at not being given any ministerial post even though it won four seats in the May general election. Chong said that on December 31 last year, Najib announced austerity measures including cutting off 10 percent of the entertainment allowances of ministers, deputy ministers and top civil servants as one of the ways to save government spending. “But five days later, he announced the appointment of Tiong (right) as a special envoy to East Asia with rank and status equivalent to that of a minister. “I see this appointment as a political one to appease the demands of SPDP. "We have ministers to take care of trade, foreign relations, tourism, and labour-exchange programmes between Malaysia and Southeast Asia countries. So why create a special post for Tiong? “With this post, the government has to spend a conservative estimate of RM10 million a year for the salaries and allowances of the minister and staff, plus paying for offices, cars, etc.

It ensures that citizens exercise their rights to vote for the destiny of the country. It is therefore essential that there must be clean and fair elections and voters are at liberty to cast their votes freely. Voters are more prepared to get involved in electoral process when they are confident that the elections are clean and fair. DAP Sarawak welcomes the recommendations to improve the election process contained in the Interim Report of PSC presented in Parliament on 1st December, 2011. We congratulate the PSC for a job well done. We do not intend to repeat the recommendations in this Memorandum. Suffice it is to say that we welcome and accept, among others: (a) the proposals to use indelible ink in order to avoid mUltiple voting by a single person; (b) advance voting by security personnel such as the armed forces and police, members of the Election Commission and media; (c) overseas voting - whereby Malaysians may be able to vote in centres arranged by the Election Commission instead of haVing to return to the home constituencies; (d) clean-up of electoral roll; (e) 14 day-period to check on new voters without haVing to pay objection fees; (f) revised voting process - whereby there will be no serial numbers on the ballot papers but only on counterfoils, recount is allowed when the vote differences between two candidates is less than 2% instead of the former 4%; (g) improvement to nomination process - whereby the objection to nomination is abolished and the 3-day cooling off period is removed.
