Copyright by AiFRED B. Shepperson. iS8i. — INSTRUCTIONS ET-OPL XJSIISrO- TX^IS COI3E. It is of the utmost importance that all cipher words should be written carefully and distinctly. Each letter of the word should be so plainly written that it can not possibly be mistaken for any " other letter. Care should be taken to dot the " i's and cross the "t's." The letters a, o, n, and u, bear close resemblance when imperfectly formed, and too much care can not be taken in writing them. More errors in telegraphing in cipher arise from careless writing than from all other causes In writing messages, begin every cipher word with a capital letter, and leave a little space between each cipher. This will lessen the chances of mistakes by telegraph operators. When it is necessary to telegraph in ordinary language, and there is fear of its being misunderstood, begin that part of the message which it is desired should be read literally, with the cipher word " Pinafore," which will be found on page 218. Words to fill blanks in sentences must be placed in the order in which they should be read, immediately after the ciphers for such sentences, except where the sentences begin with a blank. In that case, the word for the blank will immediately precede the cipher for the sentence. All quotations for "Future Delivery Contracts" sold in New York and New Orleans are for basis of " Middling, American Standard classification, any grade from Strict Ordinary to Fair, in- clusive." When orders, with a limit of time for their execution, are re- ceived after the close of the market, the time will commence from the next business day. Orders to buy or sell will be understood to be for account of the sender, unless otherwise stated. In reports of purchases or sales, "for your account" will be un- derstood, unless otherwise expressed. All orders sent by this Code to buy or sell for Future Delivery will be with the distinct understanding that the purchases or sales Bo ordered are to be, in every respect, subject to the By-Laws and Rules of the Cotton Exchange of the market in which they are executed. When several orders are embraced in the same message, and some of them are conditional, those which are unconditional should be written first ; and the conditions should always immediately pre- cede the conditional orders to which they refer. Unless otherwise stated, Sterling Bills will always be understood to be drawn at 60 days' sight, and Domestic Drafts at sight. Especial attention is invited to the Tables for giving quotations (pages 60, 61, 97 to 100, and 246 to 257), and to the Firm Offer Tables (pages 267 to 303). Full explanation of the Firm Offer Tables will be found on page 271. To express a price or quantity for which there is no " cipher " in the Tables of Numerals, use two or more "ciphers," the sum of which will express the desired amount; for example, '^Applied, Antidote"—will be read, "26S2." Suresh* [email protected] [email protected] NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA, USA Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, USA Abstract A model for the mechanical stiffness properties of bladder fabrics for inflatable decelerators under high stress conditions is developed. This planar orthotropic model uses understanding of the fabric behavior, analytical modeling, numerical simulations, and available experimental data to characterize the fabric stiffness (elastic modulus), contraction (Poisson’s ratio), and shear modulus. The derived model is designed to integrate with standard finite-element methods and is validated against available static test data for two types of silicone-coated Kevlar fabric using the commercial LS-DYNA solver. 1 Introduction NASA is investigating inflatable aerodynamic decelerator (IAD) concepts to improve the deliv- ery of high-mass missions to the surface of Mars[1, 2]. IADs typically deploy pressurized sections constructed from lightweight impermeable fabrics to decrease the ballistic coefficient of the entry ve- hicle during descent (cf. Fig. 1). These concepts also have the potential to control the aerodynamic response, e.g., by forcing the bluff-body separation location using a “burble fence.” High-fidelity analysis of these concepts requires prediction of the fabric response in a complex aerodynamic en- vironment. Detailed predictions of the fabric stiffness, damping, and potential for wrinkling (buck- ling) under dynamic and thermal loading are required. This data is difficult to obtain from sub-scale or ground testing, and it is anticipated that validated numerical methods will fill this role.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Materials This study is a comparative analysis of the vocabularies of Horn and Peterson's The Basic Vocabulary of Business Letters and the Gregg Shorthand Dictionary.2 Both books purport to present a list of words most frequently encountered by stenograpners and stu- dents of shorthand. The, Basic Vocabulary of Business Letters, published "in answer to repeated requests for data on the words appearing most frequently in business letters,"3 is a frequency list specific to business writing.

The words are drawn from Merriam- Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Though many uncommon words can be found here, many highly technical or obscure words have been omitted, as have words whose only meanings are vulgar or offensive. Rhyming sound Words in this book are gathered into entries on the basis of their rhyming sound. The rhyming sound is the last part of the word, from the vowel sound in the last stressed syllable to the end of the word.
