NEW YORK, USA Before Prohibition more than 1,000 farm distillers produced alcohol from New York grains and fruits. Once it began in 1920 and by the time it was repealed at the end of 1933, America’s legal distilling industry was all but crippled. Whole traditions and methodologies of American distilling were lost forever, including those of the New York State distillers. In 2004, a handful of distilling pioneers worked with the state to draft the law enabling distilleries to return.

  • 10 Modern American Whiskey Brands Everyone Should Know
10 Modern American Whiskey Brands Everyone Should Know gearpatrol.com/2019/07/18/whiskey-brands July 17, 2019 Whiskey With an E July 18, 2019 Drinks By Will Price Photo by Balcones Dominated almost entirely by mega-distillers like Jim Beam, Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey and Heaven Hill, the American whiskey landscape is oligarchical and old. The reason for this is straightforward: making good whiskey requires extraordinary initial capital, and the capacity to bleed money for close to a decade. This has led many of America’s next-gen distillers down a dark path, relying almost exclusively on buying stocks of whiskey from other makers and passing it off as their own. Five-year-old distilleries selling 10-year-old bourbon without any mention of where the whiskey might have been made. 1/12 Beyond transparency concerns, reliance on bought-stock spawns issues of its own. Newer distillers leaning on the work of other whiskey makers means less craft, less innovation and more stagnation in a slow-moving industry. If the smaller, less bureaucratic producers aren’t free to experiment and explore new corners of whiskey, we leave that task to colossal macro-distillers. In this way, craft whiskey is related to craft beer in name alone. But there are new American whiskey brands trying, in earnest, to change that perception. Craftspeople pushing for a more creative, more clear and more diverse whiskey shelf. From rye blenders to hype peddlers, these are ten of the brands leading whiskey’s next act. ADVERTISING Balcones Headquarters: Waco, Texas Bottle to Try: Balcones Baby Blue Balcones’s guiding principle was established early on — to make it different and make it Texas.

EACH TASTING IS PRICED PER 1 OZ. POUR CAREFULLY CURATED by FRED MINNICK VINTAGE WHISKEY VINTAGE VINTAGE WHISKEYS FROM 1800’s a TASTE of HISTORY TO MODERN ERA Our unique collection features whiskey, bourbon, and rye brands from across the globe, including over 400 vintage American whiskeys curated by renowned whiskey author Fred Minnick. THE 1800‘S Throughout the 1800s, whiskey dominated the news and medicine. You’d find whiskey invading the White House and causing scandals. President Grant’s reelection campaign was, in part, paid for by whiskey distillers defrauding the government and bribing politicians so they wouldn’t have to pay as much in taxes. It also was the subject of great political debate, from temperance women trying to ban it, to whiskey distillers trying to protect it, while doctors prescribed bourbon for everything from gout to cancer. The whiskeys from this era did not have the same consumer protection as they do today. In some cases, the whiskey rectifiers added acids and unpalatable materials VINTAGE WHISKEY VINTAGE that would be banned by today’s regulations. These whiskeys were tested, but taste at your own risk. IMPORTANT LEGISLATION Bottled in Bond Act of 1897. This was the first consumer protection legislation for whiskey and is still seen on bottles today. E1. CEDAR BROOK WHISKEY VINTAGE HANDMADE SOUR MASH WHISKEY / $1,600 BOTTLED 1892 U.S. President: Benjamin Harrison Cedar Brook was a popular Anderson County brand made at the McBrayer Distillery.
