1) On the tongue: to do so one responds “Amen” to the words “the Body of Christ” and then, with open mouth, extends the tongue so that the Minister is able to place the Host on the tongue. 2) In the hand: to do this, one presents two empty hands, flat, one resting on top of the other, and after responding “Amen” the Minister places the Host on the top hand. The Homily begins after the proclamation of the Gospel. Usually the celebrant or bishop will give it, but on occasion a deacon may also deliver the homily. Laity are not allowed to give the homily during Mass, in- cluding seminarians (cf. C.I.C. Can. 767). According to the Vatican’s Instruction Ecclesiae de Mysterio Art. 3: “The homily, therefore, during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, must be reserved to the sacred minister, Priest or Deacon to the exclusion of the non-ordained faithful, even if these should have responsibilities as "pastoral assistants" or catechists in whatever type of community or group. This exclusion is not based on the preaching ability of sacred ministers nor their theological preparation, but on that function which is reserved to them in virtue of having received the Sacrament of Holy Orders. For the same reason the diocesan Bishop cannot validly dispense from the canonical norm since this is not merely a disciplinary law but one which touches upon the closely connected functions of teaching and sanctifying.”

The homily should focus on the Gospel and Scripture readings of the day, or some other part of the Liturgy of the Word or Eucharist. It can be about the of the day, but should not be about topics that have nothing to do with the word of God read at Mass that day. The homily has been a part of Mass for as long as Christianity has been around, and even before, it was given in synagogues.

Jesus Himself gave homilies, like the words He said in Luke, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your reading” (Luke 4:21) after reading out the Scripture passage from . In the words of the document on the liturgy from Vatican II, “The homily is to be highly esteemed as part of the liturgy itself; in fact, at those Masses which are celebrated with the assistance of the people on Sundays and feasts of obligation, it should not be omitted except for a serious reason” (Sacrosanctum Concilium 52).

At Mass—WE LISTEN TO GOD’S MESSAGE After listening to today’s readings, Draw and Picture and Following the Gospel, we hear the “homily” or a write your own short homily! message about how God’s word affects us today. These messages can talk about the history of the church, or current events. They follow the priest’s or deacon’s interpretations of the Gospel readings.

St. was a priest in the early 400s, just as the Christian Empire was beginning to safely expand. And he was known for his wonderful homi- lies! Each of his sermons had a moral or social les- son, and he often preached about sharing wealth with the poor. He was first a priest in Antioch, Syria and then became the archbishop in Constantinople, Tur- key. And his messages were heard and spread all throughout the world! His name means “Golden- Mouthed.” He died in 407, and is the Patron of Preachers and Public Speakers. SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, August 1: St. —Bishop and Doctor St. Alphonsus was born in Marianella, Italy on Sep. 27, 1696. Possessing a gifted mind, he earned a doctor- ate in law at only 16 years of age. While visiting a hospital for the incurables on Aug. 28, 1723, he experi- enced a miraculous vision, and devoted himself to God thereafter. Alphonsus was ordained a priest in 1726. On Nov. 9, 1732, the saint founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the “Redemptorists”) to labor for abandoned souls. The Redemptorists received papal approval in 1749. After refusing the bishopric of Palermo, Alphonsus was pressed to accept an episcopal appointment to the diocese of St. Agatha in 1756. Alphonsus resigned in 1775 due to illness. He died Aug. 1, 1787. Monday, August 2: St. Plegmund—Bishop St. Plegmund was born in Mercia, sometime during the ninth century. He lived for several years in isolation as a hermit on the Isle of Chester before being approached by King Alfred the Great to serve as his spiritual advisor. Plegmund was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury by Pope Stephen V in 890. As bishop he instituted various re- forms. A well is named in his honor as “St. Plegmund’s Well” where it is said the saint used to baptize the local children. He passed away in 908. Tuesday, August 3: St. Peter of Anagni—Bishop St. Peter of Anagni was born in Salerno, Italy around the year 1030. Peter entered the Benedictine order, where he became a monk. Due to his holiness, he was given the position of papal chaplain. Pope St. Gregory VII consecrated Peter as Bishop of Anagni. During his episcopacy, Peter strengthened Catholicism in his diocese and rebuilt the Cathedral. He also became involved with the First Crusade to retake the Holy Land from the Muslims. After participating in the crusade, Pope Bl. Urban II named him papal legate to the Byzantine Empire.

Wednesday, August 4: Bl. Frederick Jansoone—Confessor Bl. Frederick Jansoone was born into a farming family in Ghyvelde, France on November 19, 1838. Discerning a call to the priesthood as a teenager, he attended the Institut Notre-Dame des Dunes. He dropped out of the seminary in 1856 to become a travelling salesman so that he could aid his mother who was widowed. Frederick joined the Franciscans in 1864 and was finally ordained a priest on August 17, 1870. He served in various roles including military chaplain and master of novices. From 1878 to 1888 he served as Custodial Vicar in the Holy Land. Frederick moved to Quebec, Canada on June 13, 1888 and served at Notre-Dame du Cap. He was a pro- lific writer authoring numerous books and articles. Thursday, August 5: St. Afra—Martyr St. Afra was born into a pagan family in the mid– to late-200s. It is believed that she was dedicated to the pagan goddess, Venus, and worked as a prostitute in the city of Ausburg, Germany. Once the persecutions of Dio- cletian began, Bishop Narcissus of Gerona in Spain sought refuge in Ausburg, and stayed with Afra and her mother, Hilaria. The bishop converted Afra and her mother, and their household was baptized. Afra helped to protect the bishop from the authorities. Eventually, it became known that Afra was a Christian, and she was ar- rested. Declining to make a sacrifice to pagan gods, Afra was tied to a tree on an island in the Lech River, and burned to death. After her burial, Afra’s mother built a chapel over her remains. Friday, August 6: Pope St. Hormisdas—Pope Pope St. Hormisdas was born to a wealthy family in Frosinone, Italy around the year 450. He entered into marriage and had children, but was ordained after his wife passed away. On July 21, 514, he was elected pope to succeed Pope St. Symmachus. During his nine years as pope, Hormisdas brought an end to the Acacian schism which had divided the Eastern and Western churches for three decades. He also worked to bring back those who broke away as part of the Laurentian schism. Hormisdas was suc- ceeded by his son from his prior marriage, Pope Silverius.

Saturday, August 7: Bl. Edmund Bojanowski—Confessor Bl. Edmund Bojanowski was born into a wealthy family in Grabonog, on November 14, 1814. As a youth he became seriously ill and almost passed away. He thereafter dedicated his life to the Blessed Mother. Edmund labored tirelessly to care for the sick and poor. He founded daycares, orphanages, and reading rooms for poor children. Edmund often worked in the orphanages as well. He founded the Congre- gation of the Servants of the Immaculate Mary, who still exist today and have 4,500 religious sisters. Edmund entered the seminary to become a priest but passed away two years into his formation. LIVESTREAMS LECTOR SCHEDULE

STEWARDSHIP OF OUR BECOME A PARISHIONER TREASURES Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Conformation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain minimum re- quirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how we look upon them in relation to parish membership.

ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of JULY 18, 2021 the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on PARISH COLLECTIONS the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the TOTAL $14,086.35 Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance envelopes are the primary Weekly Budget $15,833.00 way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, parishioners must place their envelopes in the collection basket ACTUAL TO BUDGET -$1,746.65 every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial con- tribution or donates online. SECOND COLLECTION RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third and fourth Capital Improvements $205.00 precept of the Church state that the faithful must ensure prepa- ration for the Eucharist by the reception of the Sacrament of Rectory Renovations $745.00 Penance at least once a year, and the reception of Holy Com- munion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC Christmas Dinner $15.00 #2042) and to join in fast and abstinence during Lent.

DSA $101.00 SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for DIOCESAN COLLECTIONNS the material needs of the Church, each according to their abili- ties in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.
