  • Pergaduhan Kaum Di Tanah Melayu Selepas Pendudukan Jepun Hingga Darurat Diisytiharkan
PERGADUHAN KAUM DI TANAH MELAYU SELEPAS PENDUDUKAN JEPUN HINGGA DARURAT DIISYTIHARKAN Mohamed Ali bin Haniffa Mohammad Redzuan bin Othman Abstract This article examines the ethnic conflict that occurred in Malaya after the end of the Japanese Occupation till the declaration of the Emergency in 1948. The Japanese Occupation worsened the already strained relations between the Malays and the Chinese. This dissatisfaction was reflected by the number of racial clashes that occurred after the Japanese army surrendered. One of the main factors for the source of the conflict after the end of the war, it appears, was the challenge to the position of Islam in the country. The Malay community lost their trust in the Chinese after the Three-Star anny interfered with religious ceremonies in mosques and suraus. The Malay community winch was synonymous with Islam, used religion as a vehicle to protect the interests of the community. As a result of tortures and killings by the Three-Star army, a religious- based movement, emerged among the Malays to preserve the sanctity of the religion and to protect the interests of the Malays. This article shows that Islam inspired the rise of nationalism among the Malays based on Islam not only to protect the religion but ultimately to free the country. Tenaga Dalam Volume 2 - August 1999 The Voice of the Indonesian Pencak Silat Governing Board - USA Branch Welcome to the August issue of Tenaga Dalam. A lot has occurred since May issue. Pendekar Sanders had a very successful seminar in Ireland with Guru Liam McDonald on May 15-16, a very large and successful seminar at Guru Besar Jeff Davidson’s school on June 5-6 and he just returned from a seminar in England. The seminar at Guru Besar Jeff Davidson’s was video taped and the 2 volume set can be purchased through Raja Naga. Tape 1 consists of blakok (crane) training and Tape 2 has about 15 minutes more of blakok training followed by a very intense training session in various animal possessions including the very rare Raja Naga possession. Guru Besar Davidson and his students should be commended on their excellent portrayal of the art. Tape 1 is available to the general public, but due to the intense nature of tape 2 you must be a student. It is with great sadness that I must report that Guru William F. Birge passed away. William was a long time personal student of Pendekar Sanders and he will be missed by all of the people that he came into contact with. 1 Tribute to Guru William F. About Dog Brothers Martial Arts Dog Brothers Martial Arts (DBMA) is a system of many styles where the ultimate goal is to “walk as a warrior for all your days™.” As such we have an ap- proach that is in search of the totality of both ritual combat (sport fighting such as Mixed Martial Arts/Vale Tudo, Muay Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and others) and reality (practical street defense, weapon awareness, and uneven odds). • Abstract: This Article Traces the Stellar Accomplishments of the Sayyids, As Descendants of the Prophet Muhammad Are Known in the Field of Islamic Da‘Wah
Abstract: This article traces the stellar accomplishments of the Sayyids, as descendants of the Prophet Muhammad are known in the field of Islamic da‘wah. For the many Sayyids who excelled as torchbearers of Islam in the Malay world, propagating Islam was a lifetime vocation that passed without the stress that we find in the modern world. Their da‘wah efforts encompassed such diverse undertakings as employing business acumen in confronting the challenges of colonialism and Malay court culture, immersing themselves in native communities via intermarriages and adoption of local customs, and carving a niche for themselves in local and international politics as advisors and emissaries. At grassroots level, da‘wah for them was inseparable from daily chores and mundane affairs. That Western colonialism hardly made any impact in directly desacralizing the Malays is a tribute to the success of the Sayyids‘ da‘wah efforts, which served as a buffer against the religious implications of colonial encroachment into autochthonous institutions and lifestyle. By looking at some examples of how the Sayyids interacted with local communities in selected regions of the Malay world, this article traces part of this glittering history of da‘wah in the easternmost parts of the Islamic commonwealth. Most importantly, the Malay world‘s Islamization was distinguished by lack of violence and emphasis on educational progress more than anything else. Keywords: Sayyid, Hadrami, Islamic da‘wah, Malay world, Islamization. Teosofi: Jurnal Tasawuf dan Pemikiran Islam Volume 11, Number 1, June 2021 p-ISSN 2088-7957; e-ISSN 2442-871X; 46-70 DOI: 10.15642/teosofi.2021.11.1.46-70 Islamic Da‘wah in the Malay Peninsula: Contributions of the Sayyids of Early Times Introduction It is a commonplace in the Muslim world for descendants of the Holy Prophet Muhammad to be generally given the honorific title of Sayyid—a designation conventionally attached in front of one‘s given name, provided that their pedigrees are established from credible genealogical sources.

  • Martial Arts As Embodied Knowledge: Asian Traditions in a Transnational World
1 Introduction Martial Arts, Transnationalism, and Embodied Knowledge D. S. Farrer and John Whalen-Bridge The outlines of a newly emerging field—martial arts studies—appear in the essays collected here in Martial Arts as Embodied Knowledge: Asian Traditions in a Transnational World. Considering knowledge as “embodied,” where “embodiment is an existential condition in which the body is the subjective source or intersubjective ground of experience,” means under- standing martial arts through cultural and historical experience; these are forms of knowledge characterized as “being-in-the-world” as opposed to abstract conceptions that are somehow supposedly transcendental (Csor- das 1999: 143). Embodiment is understood both as an ineluctable fact of martial training, and as a methodological cue. Assuming at all times that embodied practices are forms of knowledge, the writers of the essays presented in this volume approach diverse cultures through practices that may appear in the West to be esoteric and marginal, if not even dubious and dangerous expressions of those cultures. The body is a chief starting point for each of the enquiries collected in this volume, but embodiment, connecting as it does to imaginative fantasy, psychological patterning, and social organization, extends “far beyond the skin of the practicing individual” (Turner and Yangwen 2009). The discourse of martial arts, which is composed of the sum total of all the ways in which we can register, record, and otherwise signify the experience of martial arts mind- 1 © 2011 State

  • The Practice of Pencak Silat in West Java
The Politics of Inner Power: The Practice of Pencak Silat in West Java By Ian Douglas Wilson Ph.D. Thesis School of Asian Studies Murdoch University Western Australia 2002 Declaration This is my own account of the research and contains as its main content, work which has not been submitted for a degree at any university Signed, Ian Douglas Wilson Abstract Pencak silat is a form of martial arts indigenous to the Malay derived ethnic groups that populate mainland and island Southeast Asia. Far from being merely a form of self- defense, pencak silat is a pedagogic method that seeks to embody particular cultural and social ideals within the body of the practitioner. The history, culture and practice of pencak in West Java is the subject of this study. As a form of traditional education, a performance art, a component of ritual and community celebrations, a practical form of self-defense, a path to spiritual enlightenment, and more recently as a national and international sport, pencak silat is in many respects unique. It is both an integrative and diverse cultural practice that articulates a holistic perspective on the world centering upon the importance of the body as a psychosomatic whole. Changing socio-cultural conditions in Indonesia have produced new forms of pencak silat. Increasing government intervention in pencak silat throughout the New Order period has led to the development of nationalized versions that seek to inculcate state-approved values within the body of the practitioner. Pencak silat groups have also been mobilized for the purpose of pursuing political aims. Some practitioners have responded by looking inwards, outlining a path to self-realization framed by the powers, flows and desires found within the body itself.
