Brazil-born Costa’s goals for Atletico Madrid last season led to him being called up by his adopted country for the finals and earned him a big-money move to Chelsea, where he has continued his prolific form at club level. However, after five appear- ances he has yet to open his Spain account and there is a sense the European champions’ playing style, which relies on grinding down opponents with long periods of possession, may not be suited to his more direct approach. Costa said it was up to him to adapt and was confident of breaking his duck, perhaps as early as Spain’s opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Macedonia on Monday. “I sincerely believe that with work the results will come and that’s what I am focusing on,” Costa told reporters. “Things are going very well for me at Chelsea and that encourages me to continue improv- ing.” Del Bosque said the team needed to work harder to create chances for Costa and suggested he is prepared to give the 25-year-old plenty of time to settle. “Diego Costa has shown what he is capable of, now we have to connect with him, understand him,” Del Bosque told Spanish television. “He put in a lot of effort and he is certain to give us positive results.” Although it was with an experimental side, Spain’s reverse in Paris showed the 2010 world champions still have some way to go to recapture the form that secured back-to-back European titles with a debut World Cup in between. Del Bosque, without midfield stal- warts Xavi and Xabi Alonso, who retired after the finals in Brazil, and injured playmaker Andres Iniesta, used the game to try out a number of new faces, including midfielders Raul Garcia and Ander Iturraspe, SAINT-DENIS: Spanish forward Diego Costa vies with French midfielder Blaise Matuidi (right) during the friendly football defender Mikel San Jose and forward Paco Alcacer. match France vs Spain, on September 4, 2014. — AFP He also gave goalkeeper David De Gea a chance to impress while leaving captain Iker Casillas on the bench. • Adidas – Euro 2012 Player Quotes Iker Casillas
adidas – Euro 2012 Player quotes Iker Casillas - Spain Your last game is against Croatia, how do you feel ahead of this game? Our last game in our group is against Croatia and I expect this to be a very good game – it could well decide the group winners. They’ve got good attacking players like Modric and Rakitic and they play a similar style of football to us. I expect it to be very open with lots of chances for both teams and I hope we can come out on top. Who are the teams and players to look out for at Euro 2012? At Euro 2012 I think Germany will be a really strong team, they’ve got a good balanced side and played very well at the World Cup. Holland as well, runners up at the last World Cup, are a really good team. When they beat Brazil in 2010 they took a big step forward. However there are also teams like France, England and Portugal to watch out for. Take us back and tell us how it felt when you won the 2008 Euros and 2010 World Cup? I felt more intense emotions and joy at the 2008 Euros. It was my first major title with the Spanish national team and that’s when I fulfilled my childhood dream. The World Cup is the biggest tournament you can win on the national stage and it’s the dream for anyone who likes football – luckily I managed to make two dreams come true in two years! The two tournaments will always be very closely linked in my mind will always be the most special to me.

  • LEARNING from the BEST Gabriel Masfurroll
LEARNING FROM THE BEST Gabriel Masfurroll Foreword I first met Gabriel Masfurroll in the seventies, when he was a teenager and a competitive swimmer. At that time, swimming played a very important part in my life because the European Championships held in Barcelona in 1970, in which I participated actively, were an excellent yardstick for the Olympic Games of 1992. Masfurroll was living in the Residencia Joaquín Blume in Barcelona, run by my friend Ricardo Sánchez, and we had good friends in common such as Santiago Esteva and Maria Paz Corominas, swimmers who in their day were key figures in Spanish sport. I shall never forget something ‘Gaby’, as his friends call him, said to me when he was still very young: “Mr. Samaranch, when I grow up I want to be like you and match your achievements. I also love sport and believe I can do a lot for it”. It comes as no surprise to me, then, to see Masfurroll holding positions of responsibility in leading sporting institutions. A few years later, I met up with “Gaby” again when he was head of the Quirón Clinic in Barcelona. Since then we have kept in touch on a regular basis. We have met and written to each other on numerous occasions and I recall a beautiful picture, on display at the headquarters of the Olympic Committee in Lausanne, which he gave me on one of his visits. I have followed his career very closely over these years and that phrase “when I grow up I want to be like you”, made me take a keen interest in both his personal and professional development.

  • A Lesson in Humility
A Lesson in Humility There was so much to admire in Spain’s journey to the summi of world football during the 2010 World Cup: Vicente Del Bosque’s wise management, Xavi’s brilliant orchestration of the play, Andrés Iniesta’s incisive running with the ball, David Villa’s prowess in front of goal, and the goalkeeping exploits of Iker Casillas. But for those of us who observed the current World and European champions at close quarters, it was not only their football ability that impressed. Their human qualities, in particular the humility displayed by many of the Spanish players, gained them respect beyond their technical achievements. Was this positive behaviour just a lucky coincidence or was it the result of a culture within the Spanish game? It is easy to see that this successful generation of Spanish footballers are modest, unpretentious and happy to promote a “we” mentality. As Xavi stated during the World Cup: “We are a group of very normal, very hard working people who love the game.” The same can be said of their head coach, Vicente Del Bosque, who has won both the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup with his respectful, patient and unassuming style of management. What is not on public display is the process which has nurtured many of these gifted players, young men who have their feet firmly on the ground. As Fernando Hierro, sports director at the Spanish FA (the RFEF), and Ginés Meléndez, RFEF coaching school director, informed the participants at UEFA’s recent national coaches conference in Madrid, the aim in Spain is to educate talented youngsters to play, to compete and to develop a psychological balance.

  • Chelsea FC - Liverpool FC MATCH PREVIEW Stamford Bridge, London Tuesday 14 April 2009 - 20.45CET Matchday 10 - Quarter-Finals, Second Leg
Chelsea FC - Liverpool FC MATCH PREVIEW Stamford Bridge, London Tuesday 14 April 2009 - 20.45CET Matchday 10 - Quarter-finals, second leg Liverpool FC have summoned the memory of Istanbul as they plot another 'mission impossible' aimed at overturning Chelsea FC's two-goal advantage from their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg. Comeback pedigree The Merseysiders succumbed 3-1 at Anfield last week to jeopardise their chances of securing a likely semi-final against FC Barcelona – 4-0 first-leg victors against FC Bayern München – but manager Rafael Benítez knows his side have already proved their comeback pedigree in more daunting situations. Most notably, they retrieved a three-goal half-time deficit in the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League final against AC Milan in Turkey to lift the European Champion Clubs' Cup for a fifth time after a penalty shoot-out. "Istanbul is maybe the best ever final in the history of the Champions League," he said. "To beat Chelsea would be a fantastic achievement but a final is a final." Gerrard key Liverpool's hopes rest to a large extent on whether Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard are functioning at their best, and it will have been a boost to the visitors that the England midfielder took part in Monday's final training session with seemingly no pain from the groin injury which kept him out of Saturday's 4-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers FC, a result that kept the second-placed Reds in the Premier League title hunt. "If he's fit, Stevie is a key player and an inspiration," added Benítez.

  • What's the Big Deal with Futsal?
WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL WITH FUTSAL? In some countries, some of which are soccer power houses, youth play only futsal and don’t get to play on the big outdoor turf field until they are older. Some say this is the reason for their strength in soccer. Here in the USA we have been training players in reverse order. All players from 4 to 18 years old play on outdoor soccer fields and on futsal courts later. But this is changing as the benefits of futsal are now beginning to be recognized. Per the U.S. Futsal Federation, the complementary benefits of futsal for soccer are: 1. Philosophy of Learning / Game-based Learning Ever heard, “Let the game be the teacher”? Player understanding and performance is learned, improved and solidified by playing the game. The fast-paced 5v5 futsal game of continuously attacking and counter-attacking on a small and dependable surface (gym floor instead of bumpy ground) is perfect for this. You don’t need to be coached all year round. Just play and “let the game be the teacher.” 2. Tactical/Cognitive Development Tactical coaching at an early age helps with the development of cognitive abilities of players. It’s not just coaching to win over all else, as is sometimes misinterpreted. Playing futsal integrates learning of techniques, tactics and decision making along with conditioning contributing to players with outstanding “game intelligence”. Futsal’s increased frequency of player action leads to rapid refinement of players’ thought processes. Interchanging soccer and futsal training environments is an outstanding way to nurture intelligent players.
