19th December 1983 - The original FIFA World Cup trophy, the Jules Rimet Trophy, is stolen from the headquarters of the Brazilian Football Confederation in Rio de Janeiro. In 1970, received the Jules Rimet Trophy in perpetuity after winning the World Cup for a third time. In 1983, the trophy was once again stolen. A banker and football team agent called Sérgio Peralta was the mastermind of the theft. Peralta invited more 2 men: an ex-police officer called Francisco Rivera (nicknamed “Chico Barbudo”) and a decorator, José Luiz Vieira (nicknamed “Luiz Bigode”). The two men entered on the Brazilian Soccer Confederation (CBF)’s building and stole the trophy Jules Rimet and another 2 trophies, “Equitativa” and “Jurrito”. A safecracker, Antonio Setta, revealed that Sergio Peralta had invited him to steal the trophy, but he refused out of patriotism and because his brother had died of a heart attack when Brazil won the Jules Rimet Thophy. Sérgio Peralta and all the suspects were arrested, and it was revealed that the trophy was melted into gold bars by Juan Carlos Hernandez, a gold dealer. Hernandez was arrested, along with the suspects, but when they received their sentences, all of them fled. Chico Barbudo was killed in 1989 with shots by five men on a pub. Luiz Bigode was arrested once again and was freed from jail in 1998. Antonio Setta died in a John Van’t Schip car accident on 1985. It has been educational and inspiring. Being my first experience of professional football, the challenges of the pro environment have tested me. As a team we haven’t got the results we would like so far, but the team is working hard and I have no doubt we can achieve our goals of remaining in the Premier League next season. What’s the standard like over there? The standard is actually quite good. It’s such a small country but also a very improving league. What are the home town fans like? Do they know their football?
