THE LAST HURRAH: Almost 56 years to the day, the first concrete was poured for Midway Surf Life Saving Club’s spanking new £18,000 clubhouse. Due for demolition in the near future, and a new build, the club held its “last hurrah” on the weekend. To mark the occasion the committee asked Gisborne Herald senior creative and digital artist Troy Conole to create a work for auction. Conole’s 1.7-metre long print features a dramatic perspective up the beach with clean breakers on the left, Norfolk Pines and the surf club and lifeguard tower on the right. “The evening was a send off for the old girl,” said committee member Tania Gray. “We threw around some ideas for the evening and thought it was an opportune time to auction a print. It was bought by a family who have competed with Midway for years. They will donate the print to the new clubhouse when it is built.” Licence to shoot

he Gisborne Camera Club is doing very well this year, says photographer Elenor Gill Twho was recently acknowledged with the Photographic Society of New Zealand’s Licentiate award. The award is the first tier of the Photographic Society of New Zealand’s (PSNZ) Honours distinction. “It’s an internationally recognised qualification. It depends on what you want to do with your photography. If you were working professionally it’d be a big boost.” As acknowledgement of Gill’s skills the award has been a well-deserved boost for the Gisborne enthusiast as well, even if she is quick to deflect praise. “The Gisborne Camera Club is doing very well this year,” she says. In January photographic artist Julia De Cleene was announced overall winner of the Photographic Society and has since submitted a portfolio of work for associateship with the (PSNZ). Associateship is the second level of involvement with PSNZ. Fellowship is at the top while Licentiate is the first tier. It acknowledges a certain degree of confidence,” says Gill. “For each stage you send in a portfolio on any subject you like. For this award I sent a portfolio of CLEAN WIN: Energy, textures and humour feature in Gisborne photographer Elenor Gill’s picture of a red car with 10 works that demonstrated various skills. You select the number plate WASH ME tilting through a red roller-brushed car wash. The photograph featured in Gill’s portfolio something you think is appropriate and demonstrates submission to the Photographic Society of New Zealand and sealed the Licentiate award. TRAMPOLINE by Jack Malcolm GISBORNE will play host to some of the best trampolinists and tumblers in the country at the annual Central Champs this weekend. Organisers expect around 90 competitors — 22 of them local — for the three-day event, which starts tomorrow evening. One of the top local tumblers, Lily Rolls, is aiming to earn her qualification into the world championships. She needs two routines with 9.0 or higher difficulty and an overall score of 62 to qualify. Gisborne Trampoline Club coach Doug Callahan says he believes Rolls has the capability to earn her place at the next world champs. “If she can put it all together, then she’s got a really good chance.” Rolls will be attempting to qualify for the 13-and-14- year-old division at the world championship level but will be competing in the sub-junior international division over the weekend. Callahan says the club typically performs well at the event, and he expects no difference this year. He’s entered every child training competitively into the event. If they perform well under pressure, the way is open to continue on the competitive circuit to the next event in Rotorua. Competition starts with the tumbling at 5pm tomorrow, with Rolls expected to be competing from the start of the competition until about 7pm. On Saturday the trampolinists will take the floor from 8am, and on Sunday the double mini competitors will be in action from 8am, with competition expected to end about 2pm. All events will be held at the Electrinet Sport Centre on the Aberdeen Road-Stanley Road corner. Spectators are TRAINING FOR CHAMPS: Seven-year-old Porsha Hillman, of Gisborne Trampoline Club, will be among welcome, and entry is free of charge. the competitors at the Central Champs in Gisborne this weekend.
