Te Awamutu Courier, Thursday, February 21, 2008 PAGE 9 052TC047-08 PAGE 10 Te Awamutu Courier, Thursday, February 21, 2008 ‘Blast from past’ Transform your home with our for CMT veterans By Cathy Asplin It will literally be a ‘blast from the past’ for veterans of the Compulsory Military Training (CMT) Scheme when they gather at Te Kuiti on March 8. Organiser Bill Ball is a 1953 veteran and says the event has been planned as a social occasion to share memories and stories. “It’s a chance to see old friends again and talk about old times.” Over 150 people are expected to be at- tending the group reunion, which comprises members of the 4th Medium Regiment and 42nd Battery - men mostly from Te Awamutu, Otorohanga and Te Kuiti. exclusive Mr Ball says the CMT Scheme could show today’s generation a thing or two. “It certainly teaches youth about respect.” new ranges Mr Ball was one of hundreds of young men who were called up as part of the CMT Scheme. The CMT act was passed into law in 1950, making all males liable for training when they turned 18. It remained in place for most of the decade and was abolished by a new Labour Government in 1958. (A later ballot scheme from 1960 to 1970 replaced it, with randomly selected 20-year- old males conscripted for service). HOT CMT recruits went in for three months INTRODUCTORY basic training - with locals heading to Papa- kura, Tihoi or Waiouru camps - then taking part in ongoing training, mostly on week- ends during the year. Te Awamutu recruit Basil Rumbles well OFFERS remembers his time with the CMT Scheme. “It was a great time when you got to know other young men and developed yourself. Most of them loved it.” The reunion on March 8 will be held in the Waitomo Club. It’s a return to the Waipa District for Mrs Simp- son who grew up in Cambridge. Her previous corporate job took her all over the country, but she missed the day to day contact with ‘real people’. “We just wanted to get back into a family business and touch base with real New Zealand again.” The family took over the business at the beginning of December and, since then, have made substantial changes to the décor and food selection. They’ve been getting important feedback from lo- cals and are keen to hear more about how they can make the café a central part of Kihikihi. Mrs Simpson also worked as a life coach and re- ally enjoys meeting people from all walks of life. “We serve truckies, travellers and tradespeo- ple. But it’s the locals that we want to hear from. Kihikihi people deserve something nice.” Her future ideas for the café include featuring the work of local artists. “We’d love to hear from anyone who’s keen to ex- hibit their work here.” As a keen photographer herself, she would like to CICADA Café owners Janine and Brian Simpson are enjoying being part of the local community. 0520815AD fi nd some time to photograph aspects of local coun- try life to display in the café but, at the moment, her priority is behind the counter. “We’re open from 5.30am so it’s a long day - espe- cially on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday when we stay open for dinner.” The daily menu includes a breakfast favourite called the Kihikihi Biggie, as well as a wide range of hot meals and takeaways, café style lunch food and Best Fried Chicken. Kiss rocking Wellington

Te Awamutu Courier and CDs4nix (formerly Tracs) give readers the chance to celebrate the return of Kiss for Rock 2 Wellington by winning a copy of their ‘Very Best of Kiss’ CD. Kiss perform Rock 2 Wellington, Westpac Sta- dium, on Saturday, March 22 with Alice Cooper, Lordi and more. Sunday features Ozzy Osbourne, Poison, White- snake and others. Kiss gave us some of the best rock from the 1970’s and this collection is the best of it. Stellar tracks from the boys from New York City who combined their own takes on hard rock, heavy metal and glam metal to set the path where hoards of others sought to follow. Easily recognisable by their trademark face paintings and stage outfi ts the group rose to prominence in the mid seventies on the basis of their elaborate live performances which featured fi re breathing blood spitting smoking guitars and pyrotechnics. Great songs such as ‘Strutter’, ‘Rock and Roll All Night’, ‘God Gave Rock ‘N’ Roll To You II’, and ‘I Was Stay on a day and take in Ozzy Osbourne, Poison Made For Loving You’ helped to keep them on top and Whitesnake as well.
