Excerpt: José Mário dos Santos Félix Mourinho (Portuguese pronunciation: ; born 26 January 1963 in Setúbal) is a Portuguese football manager and the current manager of Real Madrid. He has the nickname 'The Special One'. Mourinho is widely regarded among experts, players and coaches, as one of the best coaches in football. Mourinho started out as a player but he was unable to forge a meaningful career in the game and eventually switched to management. Aer spells working as an assistant manager and a youth team coach in the early 1990s, he became an interpreter for Sir Bobby Robson. There he worked with him at Sporting Clube de Portugal and Porto in Portugal, before following him to Spanish club Barcelona. He remained in the Catalonian club aer Robson's departure and worked with the successor, Louis van Gaal. He began focusing on coaching and impressed with brief but successful managerial periods at Benfica and União de Leiria. He returned to Porto in 2002, this time as head coach, winning the Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal, and UEFA Cup in 2003. In 2004 Mourinho guided the team to the top of the league for a second time and won the highest honour in European club football, the UEFA Champions League. They are really attempts to work out your religion, and from there, your sectarian affiliation and politics. Answering Liverpool or Everton was risky; saying Celtic or Rangers gave you a one-in-two chance of a punch in the face. Answering Manchester United made things more complicated, because United rightly believed they were big enough to rise above sectarian affiliation.

Appointed A Scotland team manager only two months earlier, on 11 April 1967 he oversaw his team beating England, then reigning world champions, at Wembley, English football’s impressive and emblematic stadium. It was his first full international in charge and England’s first loss in 20 games. To defeat the world champions, Scotland’s most intense and enduring rivals, in these circumstances was an outstanding achievement, like winning the Grand National on your debut ride or running a four-minute mile in your first race. The date is enshrined in Scottish football history as one of its most memorable days. In fans’ folklore, it was the day when Scotland became ‘unofficial world champions’ by knocking England off their throne – and what could be sweeter for a Scottish fan?
