THE FERRIS STATE SERIES: The Saints and Bulldogs will play a two-game series for the third time in the last four years when Ferris State visits Appleton Arena for this weekend’s match- ups. The Saints split at Ferris last year, winning game one 3-2, but dropping a 5-2 decision to the Bulldogs in the rematch. Ferris State swept the series the last time it was in Canton, winning 4-2 in game one and 5-1 in game two. Overall Ferris State leads the series 7-2-0 with the only other Siant win a 5-4 decision in 2008-09 at the Catamount Cup in Burlington.

BROTHER ACTS: The Saints will not have a pair of brothers on the roster for the first time in ten years with the graduation of and the departmure of Matt Carey for the NHL after last season. The Saints had gone nine straight seasons with a pair of brothers on the roster. Brothers George and Gunnar Hughes played together for the Saints in 2012-13 and 2011-12, Sean and Kyle Flanagan and Pat and Matt Raley were teammates in 2010-11, Derek and Jared Keller played together from 2007-08 to 2009-10, and Mark and Paul Wallmann played for the Saints from 2004-05 to 2006-07. Other brother acts who have played together for the Saints have included the Lappins...Pete and Tim from 1984-85 to 1988-89 and Mike and Chris in 1990-91 and 1991-92, the Harneys, Jake and Justin from 1996-00, the Muir twins, Mike and Sean from 1998-02, plus Eric and Martin Lacroix in the 1990s, Bill and Mike Gerrie and Dean and Dick Popiel in the . In six of the brother pairings since 1987, one has been an All Ameri- ca...Greg Carey was a repeat All America and a Hobey Baker “Hobey Hat Trick” finalist last season. Pete Lappin was a two-time All America, Mike Lappin earned All America as a senior as did Justin Harney, Sean Flanagan and George Hughes. Pete and Tim Lappin are third on the all-time scoring list for brothers who have played together with 315 points (Pete 187, Tim 128).

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Saints led the nation in power play success last season and despite losing the bulk of their power play scorers to graduation or the pros, they are right back up there to start the year, currently tied for third with Air Force at 42.9 percent with six goals in 14 tries. The penalty kill, which was not a Saint strong point last year, is off to a good start as well with nine kills in 10 attempts. NHL CONNECTIONS: Former Saint Rich Peverley (), Brandon Bollig ( Blackhawks) and Mike McKenna (Columbus Bluejackets) were the only Saints playing in the NHL last season with a of players playing in the AHL, ECHL or other professional leagues. Peverly hopes to return to action after being sidelined by an irregular heartbeat. Bollig was traded to and McKenna spent most of his season in the AHL, playing in four games for Columbus in goal. A host of former players hold significant positions in the NHL. Former goaltender Jacques Martin was the head coach of the Canadiens and and most recently an assistant at . Ex-defenseman Randy Sexton, former GM at Ottawa and Florida, is now with Pittsburgh in player development.. Bill Torrey, who has a long history of management success in the NHL, was in charge of the search for Martin’s replacement as GM in Florida, is the Panthers’ Alternate Governor and is a member of the NHL Hall of Fame. He attended Ursuline High School and played lacrosse, helping his team to a state championship. He scored his first collegiate goal against Union and it was the game winner as the Saints were the last team to beat the Dutchmen prior to their run to the national title. He earned All New England first team honors in both hockey and lacrosse while playing for the Holderness School in 2012 and also played soccer for Holderness. He is the son of John and Jessica Bayreuther. 2013-14: The ECAC Co-Rookie of the Year and a second-team All ECAC defenseman, Gavin was one of the outstanding young defensemen in the nation last year. He was third in the country in scoring by defensemen with nine goals and 27 assists, and the top-scoring rookie defenseman and fifth overall among all rookies. He was Rookie of the Year in the AJHL in 2010. He had six goals and four assists in 40 games with the Ice in 2009-10. A physical player with good speed and a hard shot, he has the ability to play either forward or defense. 2011-12: The Saint nominee for ECAC Rookie of the Year, Chris Martin finished his first collegiate season with 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points, good for third on the team in scoring. He had three power play goals among his 10 and had a pair of assists on game-winning goals, the home win over Quinnipiac and a home win against Princeton. He had nine power play points with three goals and six assists and tied for second overall among all ECAC rookies in scoring.He was ECAC Rookie of the Week Nov. 22 after scoring two goals against Harvard. 2012-13: While he did not quite reach his rookie season scoring totals, Chris Martin had a solid sophomore season for the Saints with seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points in 38 games. Gunnar had 15 goals and 11 assists for 26 points in 57 games for the Blackhawks, scoring five shorthanded goals and a pair of game winners. He was the Rookie of the Year for the Blackhawks.Gunnar attended the Salisbury School and intends to major in economics at St. Lawrence. 2011-12: Gunnar had a solid rookie campaign for the Saints, playing in 34 of 36 games and scoring four goals to go with six assists. Two of his four goals were game winners...the home victory over Harvard and in game one against Minnesota State. The Harvard goal was his first colleigate goal. He played in 32 straight after sitting out the second weekend of the year. While he was limited to five games by injury in his final junior season, compiling a 2.59 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, he had a 2.63 goals against average, a .927 save percentage and went 10-7-1 in 20 games in 2010-11 for the Breakers. He led his high school team to three Super 8 appearances, the first in school history, was was captain of the Eastern Massachusetts champion baseball team as a senior.
