Networking and co-operation of the authorities in prevention of adolescent drug abuse

 University of Lapland, Department of Social Work (Rovaniemi, ) has coordinated now two Finnish - Russian co-operation project in the field of drug use in Murmansk region.  Project’s has been funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland  2004-2006 Addressing Adolescent Drug Abuse in Murmansk Region ИЗУЧЕНИЕ РАЗЛИЧНЫХ АСПЕКТОВ ПОДРОСТКОВОЙ НАРКОМАНИИ В МУРМАНСКОМ РЕГИОНЕ  2007-2009 Networking Drug Prevention in the Murmansk region Создание сети сотрудничества по профилактике наркомании в Мурманском регионе

 Murmansk Humanities Institute,  Murmansk State Pedagogical University,  Murmansk State Technical University,  and also authorities and organizations dealing with youth work and drug prevention  Selected educational institutes in the area of Murmansk (for example: Kandalaksha, Polyarniy, , Monshegorsk, , Kirovsk)  Other Finnish – Russian organizations

 The aim of the research were:  to produce required knowledge base of youth’s drug abuse situation  youth’s attitude towards drugs to direct preventive drug work and its methods communally and regionally.

Was made by our project workers from MHI, MSTU, and MSPU The study method was anonymous questioning Project researchers covered 2514 students of 5 professional lyceums and colleges of Murmansk region. The age of the respondents varied from 14 till 22 years old. (Drembach & Zubritskaya & Ruban 2007.)

0 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 11.3.2010 Suvi Tuomikoski-Koukkula, University of Lapland Talks about drugs 70% of the respondents discuss questions connected with drugs in their companies regularly The main themes of discuss are: - consequences of usage (42%) - risk of usage (20%) 50-70% of students know about the ways of drug distribution The main places where drug could be bought are: - discotheque/bar (30%) - special places (25%) - college/lyceum (4-6%) (Drembach & Zubritskaya & Ruban 2007.)

 Project workers take first steps to use qualitative research approach  In research there has been interviewed in Murmansk schools  16 adolescents, age between 12-15 years  8 parents – it was hard to find voluntary  Teachers, school psychologists and administration of school nro.3

After research approach workers develop questionnaire for studying of directions of preventive measures in adolescents and youth environment

 Danger engaged

 Health isn’t important value to adolescents

 Drug, alcohol and tobacco is part of the adolescent’s everyday life

 Adolescents don’t want or be capable of solve problems in crisis or challenging situation in life.  then life become boring

 Adolescents wonder about what they can get reward, if they don’t use drugs or they respect healthy value of life

 There is lack of understanding between parents and adolescents

 Parents is conscious of the risk of adolescent’s and drug situation in the area.

 Parents hopes more support for adolescent’s free time/hobbies

 Parents has problems for discuss about problems with their child

 Parents doesn’t know very much campaign for drug prevention in the area of Murmansk

 Research bring out, that parents are still using physical punishment in the one of the pedagogical methods.

 Drugs isn’t now so big problem in Murmansk schools

 instead alcohol and tobacco is now bigger problem, and very popular among adolescents

 Adolescents are moving over to night club / night coffee house – culture - there isn’t popular to drink beer, but more drinks

 Adolescents know much better drugs than they teachers

 Teachers get all topical information about prevention of drug work in different kind of project’s seminars. They hope more training courses but at the same time specialists of drug prevention are saying that they doesn’t get invitations to the schools.

11.3.2010 Suvi Tuomikoski-Koukkula, University of Lapland How we have use research results and networks knowledge in project work?  2004-2006 we gave education (based on research) in the field of drug prevention in Murmansk city and also  create Interinstitutional Anti-Drug Center to MHI (it is shared with MHI, MSTU, MSPU)  2007-2009 we gave education also for specialist who work with children in Murmansk region (two days seminars in , Gadzhievo, Kandalaksha, Kovdor, Lovozero, , Nikkel, Olenegorsk, Pechenga, Polarnie Zori, Severomorsk, Skalistiy and Zapolyarny).  We took part on Intertional Student theoretical and practical Anti- Drug Conference every year (same time with Decade SOS), produce radio program, adverticement  Create Monograph (theoretical and practical book, establish 3/2010 in Murmansk)

Program of the two-day regional educational seminar “Interactive Technologies in Preventive Work with Teenagers and Youth”  Moderators: Inna Zeymals – “Murmansk Regional Centre for Prevention and Control of AIDS and Infections” and Olga Fetisova – “Murmansk Regional Centre for Prevention and Control of AIDS and Infections”  Target group: specialists, who work with teenagers and young people (educational psychologists, social psychologists, school teachers, social workers, nurses etc.).  Objective is to improve the quality of specialists’ work in the sphere of healthy lifestyle and prevention of HIV and drug addiction and to teach to use the interactive technologies in preventive work.  Program Content:  Exercises on effective team work.  Effective technologies in preventive work.  Exercises on prevention of HIV and drug addiction.  Work with a film.  Methods of collage creation.  Methods of station game organization.  Topical team game “Drug addiction. HIV/AIDS. Sexually transmitted diseases”. Methods of work.  Usage methods of games with energetic types of activity “Olopoli”.  Form of work: seminar-training.  Methods of work: small conversations and lections, group work, psychological games, team games, brainstorming.

 We continue project work ”Development of Education in the Field of Substance Abuse Prevention in Murmansk region (2010-2012)”  objective is to support adolescent's substance abuse prevention in the Murmansk region giving training by distant learning methods for students, teachers and specialist working with the youth in the prevention of substance abuse (alcohol, drug and medicinal substances).
