    ISSN 2411-9563 (Print) European Journal of Social Science September -December 2019 ISSN 2312-8429 (Online) Education and Research Volume 6, Issue 3 Opening of Albanian Schools for Learning the Albanian Language in Kosovo During 1941-45 Ragip Gjoshi University of Prizren “Ukshin Hoti” Abstract Difficult, long and troublesome was the journey of Albanian letters in all Albanian lands, especially in Kosovo. The marking of the 75th anniversary of the Albanian school, being commemorated this year in all Albanian lands, is a good opportunity to see the long-lasting path of Albanian education. There are many reasons, but some are more necessary to be written and spoken about. It is rare that nations had to pay dearly for the right to write on their own language compared to Albanian people. So much blood has been shed to escape assimilation. However, when World War II had spread largely over Europe, the Nazi-fascist powers had invaded other countries including all Albanian-inhabited areas. After Albania, Yugoslavia succumbed as well. At that time, the territories of today’s Republic of Kosovo were also occupied. At that point, Kosovo was divided into three occupation zones: Italian, German and Bulgarian. Almost most of Kosovo's lands belonged to the Italian occupation zone. Thus, most of Kosovo and Western Macedonia joined Albania with Royal Decree and King of Vicar Decree no. 264, dated 12. VIII. 1941.1 In all three areas of occupation, the administration of governance was established in the service of the occupiers. The long and harsh oppression had an impact that Albanians would experience and perceive the new circumstances in every aspect as a resemblance of a real freedom, because the tyranny of the 1918-1941 period had exceeded all genocidal dimensions.2 With the initiative of Albanian Minister E.

Dr. at the Faculty of Humanities, "Aleksander Xhuvani" University, Elbasan, Republic of Albania https://doi.org/10.46609/IJAH.2021.v05i01.002 ABSTRACT Some events in Albanian historiography have been interpreted in different ways in different periods. Before the 90s of the XX century, in Albania there was the same political force, which had won World War II. This governing force had as a vital principle the expression "We won the war, we write history". History was not compromised in scientific chronological accuracy but in its interpretive mode. Events that contradicted communist ideology were either left in oblivion or distorted in interpretation. One of these events was the participation of the official Albanian Representation in the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on this important historical event for Albania and Albanians. The paper itself aims to present the circumstances in which the official Albanian representation was elected, the participation in this conference, its position, the lobbying carried out in the interest of Albania and the Albanians, and the influence of the pro - Italian wing in it. The article is based on historiographical, memorial and media sources. The methodology used is that based on scientific research and research, as well as comparative methods in the interpretive confrontation of this event within the boundaries of the two Albanian historiographical periods before the "90 and after" 90 of the XX century.

  • The Heroic Image in Albanian Historiography
    THE HEROIC IMAGE IN ALBANIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY JAMES PETTIFER (Oxford University) History is how we see ourselves in the past, and in the post-communist transition period in Albania and elsewhere in the Balkans, it has been no less a controversial and important subject than it was under communism, or preceding political systems. Western international bodies like the European Union have devoted funding and commitment to what has been regarded as the ‘modernization’ of ‘false’ or ‘distorted’ communist history.i The argument I am putting forward in this paper suggests that in reality only very limited change has been achieved towards transnational historical writing since 1990, and much post-communist Albanian historical writing rests on intellectual foundations concerning the national identity, principally in linguistics and archaeology, that developed in the communist period. Furthermore, some aspects of post-1990 writing have actually embodied strongly Panalbanian conceptions, due to the ‘recovery’ of the Balli Kombetar narratives in Kosova and Western Former Yugoslav Macedonia/Republic of Macedonia suppressed by the Titoist and Enverist educational systems. The importance of the Kosova Liberation Army in achieving the independence of Kosova in 2008 is likely to reinforce the analysis of the Partisan and informal military traditions in Kosova Albanian historiography. It is important to bear in mind that Albanian political, economic and military history has always been little known outside the country, in fact for long periods knowledge can hardly be said to have existed at all. Foreign scholarship always concentrated on cultural history, the language and literature, from the translations and literary text production in the Venetian world of Buzau and his successors to the scholarly researches of the Austrian Hellenism Johannes von Hahn in the nineteenth centuryii.
