MOFCOM is similar to the US Department of Commerce in that it regulates domestic and foreign trade, works to attract foreign investment, and helps Chinese companies abroad. It also incorporates trade policy and administrative functions, particularly regarding World Trade Organization (WTO) implementation. MOFCOM manages competition policy, supervises anti- counterfeiting efforts and coordinates regional protectionism within China. MOFCOM was originally created in 2003 by combining the former Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation with components of the former State Economic and Trade and State Development Planning Commissions.
