MS-DOS 4.01 and the Vectra LS/12 Making the Fast Even Faster

By David Hughes

Who would ever believe that it could be possible to improve the performance of the HP Vectra LS/12 by upgrading to a newer version of MS-DOS? It was an accidental discovery for me when I inadvertently turned on my Zenith SupersPort 286 with anMS-DOS 4.01 system disk left in the A drive. Although my experiences are for the Zenith SuperSport, the HP Vectra LS/12 should be similar. Portable Vectra users should also notice a performance increase, but I was unable to make the test. It is my opinion that the greatest reason for upgrading to MS-DOS 4.01 is that you can achieve signifi cantly better hard disk performance when DOS 4.01's LS/12's Sold Out, Some SMARTDRV disk and FASTOPEN utility are installed in conjunction with the ZEMM manager Parts May Be Hard to Come By (ZEMM on the 1990 Subscribers disk).
