Presenters*

wight T. Pitcaithley is College Professor of History at New Mexico State University. In 2005

Dhe retired as Chief Historian of the National Park Service, a position he held for ten years.

During his thirty- year career with the National Park Service, he worked in Santa Fe, Boston, and Washington, D.C. He has published articles related to historic preservation and the interpretation of historic sites and visited 220 of the 388 natural and cultural places that comprise the National Park System.

arie Tyler- McGraw is an independent scholar currently working as a consultant and

Mcontractor for public history projects. She was a historian at the National Park Service and

the Valentine Richmond History Center. She worked for the National Endowment for the Humanities, taught American history and American studies in several colleges and universities, and held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution. She has recently completed a book manuscript on the American Colonization Society, Crossing Over: Virginia and Liberia.

Lynn: Preserving the White Man’s Republic: The Democratic Party and the Transformation of American Conservatism, 1847-1860 (Under the direction of Harry L. Watson) In the late 1840s and 1850s, the American Democratic party redefined itself as “conservative.” Yet Democrats’ preexisting dedication to majoritarian democracy, liberal individualism, and white supremacy had not changed. Democrats believed that “fanatical” reformers, who opposed slavery and advanced the rights of African Americans and women, imperiled the white man’s republic they had crafted in the early 1800s. There were no more abstract notions of freedom to boundlessly unfold; there was only the existing liberty of white men to conserve. Democrats therefore recast democracy, previously a progressive means to expand rights, as a way for local majorities to police racial and gender boundaries. In the process, they reinvigorated American conservatism by placing it on a foundation of majoritarian democracy. Empowering white men to democratically govern all other Americans, Democrats contended, would preserve their prerogatives. With the policy of “popular sovereignty,” for instance, Democrats left slavery’s expansion to territorial settlers’ democratic decision-making.

Now, the imposing seven- foot marble likeness resides in the entranceway to Beeson University Center. Curry inherited a post–Civil War college in dire straits, leaving after two years. He made his national reputation as an advocate for public education for everyone. 10 Leadership Team Samford’s vice presidential leadership team is responsible for all areas of the university—academics, business affairs, enrollment management and student affairs, operations and planning, and advancement (fund-raising and communication). Learn more about the team in this series of short profiles. 18 Reconsecrating a Sacred Place Fifteen years ago, in 1995, Samford consecrated its divinity school chapel as “a hallowed place to the glory of God.” Beeson Divinity School students and faculty recently reconsecrated the chapel, with its spectacular demonstration of Protestant sacred art. It was named Andrew Gerow Hodges Chapel in 2002. 30 Focusing on Student Success New Alabama community college chancellor Freida Hill understands the needs of students in the system she heads. Many have to work their way through school, as she did.     ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: “A LIGHT WHICH REVEALS ITS TRUE MEANING”: STATE SUPREME COURTS AND THE CONFEDERATE CONSTITUTION Donald Louis Stelluto, Jr., Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Herman J. Belz Departm ent of History During the Civil War, Confederate wartime legislation, chiefly conscription, exemption, and impressments statutes, raised fundamental constitutional issues. These actions by the national government became a prolific source of litigation in many southern states. Yet, in the absence of a national Confederate Supreme Court, it fell to state supreme courts and state jurists to resolve these challenges to the national government’s exercise of constitutional war powers and to enunciate key constitutional principles and explain the tenets of Confederate political philosophy. As a result, southern state supreme courts became the primary venues in which national constitutional issues were adjudicated. The constitutional purposes and goals of the Confederacy were national - rather than state -oriented and provided for limited but effective national government, a truly federal union in which state and national governments were to both operate effectively and energetically, and within the national gover nment, the powers of the national government were to be separated to promote efficiency and prevent usurpation. In these cases, state supreme courts enunciated key Confederate constitutional doctrines and principles n amely, limited government or constituti onalism, federalism, the separation of powers, and national purposes. State jurists established that the Confederate Constitution was a substantive and purposeful constitutive consisting of conservative principles and innovative forms and features. Operat ing as a de facto supreme court, these state supreme courts considered scores of wartime decisions.

Once the task of reconciliation and Reconstruction had begun, many people, North and South, fought to determine the future of the war’s memory. Within the former Confederate states, white men and women resisted Reconstruction and rejected the new racial order that had been created due to the abolition of slavery. At Reconstruction’s end, these former Confederates worked to re-create the Old South, enforcing prewar racial and gender hierarchies while romanticizing the Confederacy and its war. This rewriting of Civil War memory in the service of contemporary upheavals would become the Lost Cause. Historian Gaines M. Foster explains the Lost Cause’s hold on southern memories of the war as “they [white southerners] remembered the battle but had forgotten its pain, its cost, and its issues.”1 More importantly, the Lost Cause also became a tool of white supremacy—a justification for slavery, for black inferiority, and for contemporary Jim Crow laws and racial segregation.
