Creating a Character
This game is based on Mattel's Masters of the Universe. It would be nothing without the many people involved in creating the brand and everything connected to it. I've tried to acknowledge everyone that I know had a part but there's bound to be omissions. Thanks to everyone involved. A brand as large as this is not easy to wrap one's head around and while there's only one writer of this game most of the information here was originally collected by fans and shared on various websites, mailing lists and forums. I owe a great gratitude to all those people and I've tried to credit everyone but there might be people I've neglected to mention. I'd be happy to correct any mistakes, and change online aliases to the correct names if you wish. This is version 0.4 MOTU RPG created by Daniel Schenström Masters of the Universe Classics (MOTUC) entries in this game mostly written by Scott Neitlich and Danielle Gelehrter. Downloaded by [New York University] at 13:09 03 October 2016 LEGO STUDIES Since the “Automatic Binding Bricks” that LEGO produced in 1949, and the LEGO “System of Play” that began with the release of Town Plan No. 1 (1955), LEGO bricks have gone on to become a global phenomenon, and the favorite building toy of children, as well as many an AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO). LEGO has also become a medium into which a wide number of media franchises, including Star Wars , Harry Potter , Pirates of the Caribbean , Batman , Superman , Lord of the Rings , and others, have adapted their characters, vehicles, props, and settings. The LEGO Group itself has become a multimedia empire, including LEGO books, movies, television shows, video games, board games, comic books, theme parks, magazines, and even MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games). LEGO Studies: Examining the Building Blocks of a Transmedial Phenomenon is the fi rst collection to examine LEGO as both a medium into which other fran- chises can be adapted and a transmedial franchise of its own. BUILDING CITIES, BUILDING WORLDS: CITIES IN PLAY Jason Bainbridge Introduction From building blocks, to Lego kits, to the houses and hotels of Monopoly, miniatures of the city have always featured in children‟s play. Often the largest, most desired and most expensive items in a toy line, playsets, playmats and model villages enable children to play at being adults. Through them, children become architects and planners of secondary worlds to protect and destroy, making the lounge room, the bedroom and the playroom urban topoi where the city itself becomes both an atmospheric and symbolic protagonist in play. In this paper I want to focus on playsets - toys that mobilize the old iconography of the city for new purposes. Drawing on Susan Stewart‟s notion of the miniature as a metaphor for interiority (1993) I want to use the playset to explore both the representation and function of the city in play. The bulk of the examples herein are American because as Eric Clark notes: “the American toy industry dominates not just the United States but the whole of the globe. It is now a $22 billion business, and although fewer than 4 per cent of the world‟s children are American, American children consume over 40 per cent of the world‟s toys” (10). -
