BOARDWALK EMPIRE "In God We Trust" By Reginald Beltran Based on characters by Terence Winter Reginald Beltran [email protected] FADE IN: EXT. FOREST - DAY A DEAD DOE lies on the floor. Blood oozes out of a fatal bullet wound on its side. Its open, unblinking eyes stare ahead. The rustling sound of leaves. The fresh blood attracts the attention of a hungry BEAR. It approaches the lifeless doe, and claims the kill for itself. The bear licks the fresh blood on the ground. More rustling of the undergrowth. The bear looks up and sees RICHARD HARROW, armed with a rifle, pushing past a thicket of trees and branches. For a moment, the two experienced killers stare at each other with unblinking eyes. One set belongs to a primal predator and the other set is half man, half mask. The bear stands on its two feet. It ROARS at its competitor. Richard readies his rifle for a shot, but the rifle is jammed. The bear charges. Calmly, Richard drops to one knee, examines the rifle and fixes the jam. He doesn’t miss a beat. He steadies the rifle and aims it. BANG! It’s a sniper’s mark. The bear drops to the ground immediately with a sickening THUD. Blood oozes out of a gunshot wound just under its eyes - the Richard Harrow special. EXT. FOREST - NIGHT Even with a full moon, light is sparse in these woods. Only a campfire provide sufficient light and warmth for Richard. A spit has been prepared over the fire. A skinned and gutted doe lies beside the campfire.

  • Boardwalk Empire’ Comes to Harlem
ENTERTAINMENT ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Comes to Harlem By Ericka Blount Danois on September 9, 2013 “One looks down in secret and sees many things,” Dr. Valentin Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright) deadpans, speaking to Chalky White (Michael K. Williams). “You know what I saw? A servant trying to be a king.” And so begins a dance of power, politics and personality between two of the most electrifying, enigmatic actors on the television screen today. Each time the two are on screen—together or apart—they breathed new life into tonight’s premiere episode of Boardwalk Empire season four, with dark humor, slight smiles, powerful glances, smart clothes and killer lines. Entitled “New York Sour,” the episode opened with bombast, unlike the slow boil of previous seasons. Set in 1924, we’re introduced to the tasteful opulence of Chalky White’s new club, The Onyx, decorated with sconces custom-made in Paris and shimmering, shapely dancing girls. Chalky earned an ally, and eventually a partnership to be able to open the club, with former political boss and gangster Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) by saving Nucky’s life last season. This sister club to the legendary Cotton Club in Harlem is Whites-only, but features Black acts. There are some cringe-worthy moments when Chalky, normally proud and infallible, has to deal with racism and bends over to appease his White clientele. But more often, Chalky—a Texas- born force to be reckoned with—breathes an insistent dose of much needed humor into what sometimes devolves into cheap shoot ’em up thrills this season. The meeting of the minds between Narcisse and Chalky takes root in the aftermath of a mistake by Chalky’s right hand man, Dunn Purnsley (Erik LaRay Harvey), who engages in an illicit interracial tryst that turns out to be a dramatic, racially-charged sex game gone horribly wrong.

  • 60 Moral Emotions, Antiheroes and the Limits of Allegiance Alberto N
Pre-copy-edited version of “Moral Emotions, Antiheroes and the Limits of Allegiance”, in Emotions in Contemporary TV Series, García, Alberto N. (eds), Palgrave McMillan, Basingstoke, 2016, pp. 52-70. (See Springer website) Moral Emotions, Antiheroes and the Limits of Allegiance Alberto N. García 1. Introduction According to its creator, Vince Gilligan, Breaking Bad (AMC, 2008-13) describes the moral corruption of a normal man, the conversion of Mr. Chips to Scarface. In ‘Full Measures’ (3.13), the moral and emotional complexity of the story is encapsulated in a seemingly incidental scene. We see Walter White in his living room, giving little Holly a bottle of milk. A close up shows how the baby grabs at his glasses, and in this moment of paternal tenderness, the writers cunningly re-humanize a character who just executed two thugs and minutes later ordered the death of his lab partner, as if to remind us that, at heart, ‘he’s really just a family man’ forced by circumstances to take matters into his own hands. This important step in the metamorphosis of Walter is again mitigated by several factors: children, the family and everyday domestic life. Self-defence is of course the justification for these deaths, but the devotion of a father towards his little baby also enter into the moral and emotional equation that characterises Breaking Bad. Like AMC’s acclaimed hit, many contemporary series—especially those on cable TV—are full of characters that we love, broadly speaking, despite the many vile actions they have committed: Tony Soprano, Nancy Botwin, Don Draper, Jackie Peyton and Al Swearengen.

During the years of Prohibition, police enforced the ban on making, transporting and selling alcoholic beverages. In this image, we see a police raid at Elk Lake, Canada, during 1925. Online via Archives of Ontario. Johnny Torrio was right when he saw Prohibition as a lucrative opportunity for organized crime. Before the "Noble Experiment" (so called by President Hoover) failed miserably, after just thirteen years, organized crime made staggering amounts of money from the liquor business. A monologue of the time illustrates, in part, how the twenties became "the lawless years." Performing "Donnie Donahue, on Prohibition," William Cahill expressed the mood of many in 1921: When we need a bottle they take it away from us! Because the perceived need was great, the bootlegging trade flourished and led directly to "the lawless decade" of the 1920s. It wasn’t just homemade alcohol, made with a moonshine still, that police tried shut down. Smugglers, called "rumrunners," worked both coasts, illegally importing the banned substance from Canada and Mexico, among other places. The Chesapeake Bay was a "smuggler’s paradise." Bootlegging operations went on everywhere, but many who took the risks were forced to give their profits to city officials.

Scorsese on The Boardwalk - gangster-tv med havudsigt Af EDVIN VESTERGAARD KAU & STEFFEN MOESTRUP Jimmy: ”Nucky, all I want is an opportunity.” Nucky: ”This is America, ain’t it? Who the fuck’s stopping you?!” Steve Buscemi spiller Enoch ”Nucky” Thompson, økonomichef i Atlantic City. Fig. 1. Som historisk forskning har påvist, var forbudstiden muligvis givtig i forhold til at nedsætte forbruget af alkohol, men nogen gavnlig effekt på samfundet kan det ikke siges at have haft.

In addition to those old standbys of lustworthiness, the city is brimming with slightly less boldfaced but equally desirable buildings— that are just as impossible to penetrate. Here, a peek inside the Red Hook rental with a 40person wait list, the Fifth Avenue coop straight out of an Edith Wharton novel, and the $525amonth Chelsea studio. By S.Jhoanna Robledo Published Dec 15, 2013 The Perfectly Quaint Mews: Sniffen Court Back in the 1800s, the city’s mews houses were used as shelter for carriages and the pungent animals that pulled them. In the early twentieth century, these carriage houses were either demolished or (Photo: © Patti McConville/Alamy) restored as quaint, picturesque cobblestoned alleys. Of these, Sniffen Court, a charming nook with only ten houses off East 36th Street that were intended as stables for affluent families in nearby mansions, is one of the most Currier & Ives–esque. Built by three developers (none of them, incidentally, John Sniffen, to whom it supposedly owes its Seussian name), the street is beloved because of its petiteness—the better to take in its charms in one fell swoop, says Andrew Dolkart, director of the historicp reservation program at Columbia University—and, according to a Landmarks Preservation Commission report, it boasts “wellpreserved original buildings whose exteriors are altered only in minor details.” Very few houses have changed hands over the years, though TV host Graham Norton reportedly bought one in 2003 for $3 million.

  • Boardwalk Empire: the Romantic Side of Crime and Capitalism
Boardwalk Empire: The Romantic Side of Crime and Capitalism ASHLEY M. DONNELLY Boardwalk Empire, HBO’s series about Atlantic City during Prohibition, was adapted by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and producer Terence Winter from Nelson Johnson’s Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City. The series is a beautifully scripted piece of historical fiction, beginning in 1919 on the boardwalk of Atlantic City on the eve of Prohibition. The protagonist, Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, is based loosely on the real-life Atlantic City politician Enoch L. Johnson. Nucky is Atlantic City’s treasurer, master schemer, and effective ruler of the city. The onset of Prohibition offers a new black market in the United States, and the ruling politicians and law enforcement agents of Atlantic City are eager for a piece of the pie, cheering as Nucky declares he will keep the city “wet as a mermaid’s twat,” despite the federal mandate. Nucky offers a unique vision of an American gangster with the aid of actor Steve Buscemi’s skill at performing this complex character. Nucky also helps bring Atlantic City alive, allowing it to shine as the centerpiece of the show, a show that encourages its audience to cheer for a crooked anti-hero and all of the antics of those that produce a narrative perpetuating an idea that corruption is an inevitable part of U.S. culture and that the black market and flesh trade are somehow linked with escapism and harmless civil disobedience. The Gangster From the rise of the mafia to the biker gangs of California, certain attributes have become associated with the archetype of “gangster:” he swaggers, he is physically dominant, he is quick to anger, his emotions are on the surface, and confrontation is not something he avoids, but often seeks.

HBO PREMIERES NEW SEASON OF BOARDWALK EMPIRE Miami, September 25, 2012 – HBO Latin America announced that it will premiere the third season of the four-time Emmy® winning, highly acclaimed series, Boardwalk Empire, on October 14. Created by Terrence Winter (Emmy® Award-winning writer of The Sopranos) and directed and produced by Martin Scorsese (Academy Award® winning director), this one-hour drama series chronicles the life and times of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Emmy® nominee and Golden Globe® winner Steve Buscemi), Atlantic City’s undisputed czar at a time when Prohibition proved to be a major catalyst in the rise of organized crime in America. At the end of the second season, Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) married Nucky to avoid being forced to testify against him. After a prosecution witness was found dead with a “confession” next to his body, the judge declared a mistrial and Nucky was freed. Van Alden (Michael Shannon), with the feds in pursuit and his baby and nanny in tow, moved to Cicero, IL, under an assumed name. Jimmy (Michael Pitt), regretting his role in the failed hit on Nucky, tried to get back in his former boss’ good graces, but Nucky was unmoved; using Manny Horvitz (William Horsythe) as bait, Nucky called Jimmy out in the rain and killed him. The next day, he told Margaret that Jimmy had reenlisted in the Army, then celebrated a windfall with cronies on the highway site he thought he owned. Little did he realize that Margaret had just signed the deed over to the Church. Consisting of 12 episodes, season 3 is set 16 months later on New Year’s Eve 1922-23.

HBO PREMIERES FOURTH SEASON OF BOARDWALK EMPIRE Miami, FL – September 24, 2013 – HBO Latin America announced that it will premiere the fourth season of the 17-time Emmy® winning, highly acclaimed original drama series, Boardwalk Empire, on October 6th. Season 4 picks up eight months after the end of Season 3, in February 1924 – the year jazz “really came into being,” with fictional dancers/singers as well as the ubiquitous Charleston dance. Having barely survived an overthrow by Gyp Rossetti in Season 3, Nucky Thompson is laying low at the end of the Boardwalk as the season begins. Eventually he’ll butt heads with Mayor Bader, battle with his brother Eli about the fate of Eli’s college-bound son Willie, and set his sights on the lucrative drug and real-estate opportunities in Florida. Most of the drama in this season’s twelve episodes will take place in Atlantic City, and musical showpieces will be set in the Onyx Club (modeled after the Cotton Club), to be run by Chalky White. Some of the action will also take place in Florida and Chicago. In addition to Nucky, returning major characters include Margaret Thompson (Kelly
