No One Goes Quietly in the Final Season of HBO's Boardwalk Empire No one goes quietly in the final season of HBO's Boardwalk Empire Miami FL – August 21, 2014 – HBO’s Emmy® and Golden Globe winning original drama series Boardwalk Empire returns for its eight-episode, fifth and final season on Sunday, September 7th in the Caribbean, simultaneously with the United States. Created by Terence Winter (Emmy®-winning writer of “The Sopranos”) and directed by Martin Scorsese (Academy Award winner), this Prohibition era series chronicles the life and times of Atlantic City’s undisputed ruler, Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, portrayed by award-winning actor Steve Buscemi. The first four seasons took place during the 1920s, and this new season leaps seven years forward to the depths of the Great Depression in 1931, where Nucky recalls his Atlantic City roots and plots a post-Prohibition future. As the country struggles to cope with the Depression, and with the end of Prohibition in sight, Nucky looks to legitimize himself through alliances with liquor producers, while rivals Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky seek to consolidate their power in the wake of Arnold Rothstein’s death and eliminate all competition – by any means necessary. In addition to Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire stars Kelly Macdonald as Margaret, Nucky’s estranged wife; Michael Shannon as former Federal Agent Nelson Van Alden, caught up in gangland conflicts; Shea Whigham as Nucky’s brother Eli, who went underground after killing a federal agent; Stephen Graham as gangster Al Capone; Vincent Piazza as gangster Lucky Luciano; Paul Sparks as gangster Mickey Doyle; Michael Kenneth Williams as Nucky’s former ally Chalky White; Gretchen Mol as Gillian, now battling her demons; and Jeffrey Wright as Valentin Narcisse, Chalky’s nemesis. Other returning cast members this season are Anatol Yusef as gangster Meyer Lansky; Ben Rosenfield as Eli’s son, Willie Thompson, now a young prosecutor on the rise; Patricia Arquette as Nucky’s ally, Sally Wheet, now based in Cuba; and Michael Zegen as gangster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel. New cast members include Jim True-Frost as crimefighter Eliot Ness; Matt Letscher as wealthy, politically connected businessman Joseph Kennedy; Giampiero Judica as Salvatore Maranzano, the “boss of all bosses”; and Louis Cancelmi as Capone enforcer Mike D’Angelo. Boardwalk Empire has been a success among fans and critics alike, garnering several awards and nominations in the course of its four seasons, among them for best drama series and best actor. It recently received seven Emmy® nominations (awards to be announced), and has won several Emmy® Awards in past years: five, the most of any series, in last year’s competition; four in 2012; and led all programming with eight in 2011, along with two Golden Globe Awards. • A General Model of Illicit Market Suppression A
ALL THE SHIPS THAT NEVER SAILED: A GENERAL MODEL OF ILLICIT MARKET SUPPRESSION A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Government. The views expressed in this dissertation do not reflect the official policy or position of the United States Air Force, Department of Defense, or the U.S. Government. ii ALL THE SHIPS THAT NEVER SAILED: A GENERAL MODEL OF TRANSNATIONAL ILLICIT MARKET SUPPRESSION David Joseph Blair, M.P.P. Thesis Advisor: Daniel L. Byman, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This model predicts progress in transnational illicit market suppression campaigns by comparing the relative efficiency and support of the suppression regime vis-à-vis the targeted illicit market. Focusing on competitive adaptive processes, this ‘Boxer’ model theorizes that these campaigns proceed cyclically, with the illicit market expressing itself through a clandestine business model, and the suppression regime attempting to identify and disrupt this model. Success in disruption causes the illicit network to ‘reboot’ and repeat the cycle. If the suppression network is quick enough to continually impose these ‘rebooting’ costs on the illicit network, and robust enough to endure long enough to reshape the path dependencies that underwrite the illicit market, it will prevail. Two scripts put this model into practice. The organizational script uses two variables, efficiency and support, to predict organizational evolution in response to competitive pressures.

  • ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: WORK UNDER DEMOCRACY
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: WORK UNDER DEMOCRACY: LABOR, GENDER AND ARENDTIAN CITIZENSHIP Alison Kathryn Staudinger, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Dissertation Directed by: Stephen Elkin, Professor Emeritus Government & Politics In the interest of promoting a co-constitutive theory of democratic citizenship, this dissertation explores three questions. I ask how work is defined and how this definition creates a hierarchy of types of work, which then leads to my second question, which is how definitions of work or what is not work are carried over into the public space of poli- tics and citizenship, such that even legal citizens may be marginalized by the type of work that they do. I first critique democratic theory, particularly as centered on the idea of the public sphere, for failing to think about work, especially the labor that is required to build these political spaces. I then show how the contemporary economy challenges the ability of citizens to engage in political work because it produces conditions of pre- carious labor, ubiquitous work, the depoliticization of work itself, and incompatibility of wage labor and family life. I use two historical case studies to explore how groups have claimed collective rights housed in the substantive needs of communities when asserting the validity of their work for citizenship. I look to the Articles of Confederation and Dan- iel Shays for an example focused on waged labor, and then the temperance and Anti- temperance movements for a consideration of gendered reproductive labor. I then address my third question, which is whether it is possible to promote the political work of co- constituting a shared public world without also denigrating the labor, particularly care labor, that is supportive of this project.

BOARDWALK EMPIRE "In God We Trust" By Reginald Beltran Based on characters by Terence Winter Reginald Beltran [email protected] FADE IN: EXT. FOREST - DAY A DEAD DOE lies on the floor. Blood oozes out of a fatal bullet wound on its side. Its open, unblinking eyes stare ahead. The rustling sound of leaves. The fresh blood attracts the attention of a hungry BEAR. It approaches the lifeless doe, and claims the kill for itself. The bear licks the fresh blood on the ground. More rustling of the undergrowth. The bear looks up and sees RICHARD HARROW, armed with a rifle, pushing past a thicket of trees and branches. For a moment, the two experienced killers stare at each other with unblinking eyes. One set belongs to a primal predator and the other set is half man, half mask. The bear stands on its two feet. It ROARS at its competitor. Richard readies his rifle for a shot, but the rifle is jammed. The bear charges. Calmly, Richard drops to one knee, examines the rifle and fixes the jam. He doesn’t miss a beat. He steadies the rifle and aims it. BANG! It’s a sniper’s mark. The bear drops to the ground immediately with a sickening THUD. Blood oozes out of a gunshot wound just under its eyes - the Richard Harrow special. EXT. FOREST - NIGHT Even with a full moon, light is sparse in these woods. Only a campfire provide sufficient light and warmth for Richard. A spit has been prepared over the fire. A skinned and gutted doe lies beside the campfire.
