HBO, Sky's 'Chernobyl' Leads 2020 BAFTAs with 14 Nominations

HBO and Sky's Emmy-winning limited series Chernobyl tied 's record, set last year, of 14 nominations at the 2020 BAFTA TV awards.

That haul helped Sky earn a total of 25 nominations. The BBC led with a total of 79, followed by with 31.

The series about the nuclear disaster that befell the Russian city was nominated best mini-series, with and Stellan Skarsgård nommed best lead and supporting actor, respectively.

Other limited series to score nominations were ITV's Confession, BBC One's The Victim and Channel 4's The Virtues.

Netflix's , produced by Left Bank Pictures, was next with seven total nominations, including best drama and acting nominations for Oscar-winner , who played Queen Elizabeth, and , who played Princess Margaret. Also nominated best drama were Channel 4 and 's The End of the F***ig World, HBO and BBC One's Gentleman Jack and BBC Two's Giri/Haji. Besides Colman, dramatic acting nominations went to for BBC One's Elizabeth Is Missing, Emmy winner and last year's BAFTA winner for BBC One's Killing Eve, Samantha Morton for Channel 4's I Am Kirsty and Suranne Jones for Gentleman Jack. Besides Harris, men nominated for lead actor include Callum Turner for BBC One's The Capture, Stephen Graham for The Virtues and Takehiro Hira for Giri/Haji.

And besides Carter, other supporting actress nominations went to Helen Behan for The Virtues, Jasmine Jobson for Top Boy and Naomi Ackie for The End of the F***ing World.

Supporting actors are Joe Absolom for ITV's A Confession, Josh O'Connor for The Crown, Will Sharpe for Giri/Haji along with Skarsgård.

On the comedy side, BBC Three's , which scooped up four Emmys for Amazon and Phoebe Waller-Bridge last fall, is nominated best scripted comedy, along with Channel 4's Catastrophe (which also streams on Amazon in the U.S.), Channel 4's Derry Girls and Channel 4's Stath Lets Flats.

Both Waller-Bridge and Sian Clifford, who plays her sister, are nominated for their performances in Fleabag. They are joined by Gbemisola Ikumelo for BBC Three's Famalam and Sarah Kendall for 's Frayed.

Men nominated for best performance in a comedy include Guz Khan for BBC Three's Man Like Mobeen, for Channel 4's Stath Lets Flats, Ncuti Gatwa for Netflix's Sex Education and Youssef Kerkour for Channel 4's Home.

Series nominated for best international TV show include HBO's Euphoria and Succession, and Netflix's Unbelievable and When They See Us.

The TV BAFTAs will be handed out virtually July 31 by host The IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade and the BAFTA TV craft awards will be given out virtually on July 17. The BAFTAs were originally scheduled for May 17 but had to be postponed due to the pandemic.
