Hbo Premieres New Season of Boardwalk Empire HBO PREMIERES NEW SEASON OF BOARDWALK EMPIRE Miami, September 25, 2012 – HBO Latin America announced that it will premiere the third season of the four-time Emmy® winning, highly acclaimed series, Boardwalk Empire, on October 14. Created by Terrence Winter (Emmy® Award-winning writer of The Sopranos) and directed and produced by Martin Scorsese (Academy Award® winning director), this one-hour drama series chronicles the life and times of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Emmy® nominee and Golden Globe® winner Steve Buscemi), Atlantic City’s undisputed czar at a time when Prohibition proved to be a major catalyst in the rise of organized crime in America. At the end of the second season, Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) married Nucky to avoid being forced to testify against him. After a prosecution witness was found dead with a “confession” next to his body, the judge declared a mistrial and Nucky was freed. Van Alden (Michael Shannon), with the feds in pursuit and his baby and nanny in tow, moved to Cicero, IL, under an assumed name. Jimmy (Michael Pitt), regretting his role in the failed hit on Nucky, tried to get back in his former boss’ good graces, but Nucky was unmoved; using Manny Horvitz (William Horsythe) as bait, Nucky called Jimmy out in the rain and killed him. The next day, he told Margaret that Jimmy had reenlisted in the Army, then celebrated a windfall with cronies on the highway site he thought he owned. Little did he realize that Margaret had just signed the deed over to the Church. Consisting of 12 episodes, season 3 is set 16 months later on New Year’s Eve 1922-23. Though the economy is booming, alcohol has become scarce, competition is fierce, and gangster violence is heating up. Amidst this backdrop, Nucky, whose marriage to Margaret has become a sham after she signed away his highway windfall to the church, faces new competition in the person of Gyp Rosetti (new cast member Bobby Cannavale), who builds a new strategic bulkhead between New York and Atlantic City in an effort to siphon off Nucky’s alcohol business. The conflict brings out the best and worst in Nucky, who proves his brutal mettle in a series of violent encounters. Along with Nucky and Margaret, returning characters include Gillian Darmody (Gretchen Mol), who in the wake of Jimmy’s death turns the Commodore’s house into a brothel; Nelson Van Alden, who is tempted by corruption after encountering mobsters Dean O’Banion (new cast member Arron Shiver) and Al Capone (Stephen Graham) in Chicago; Chalky White (Michael Kenneth Williams), who opens a Cotton Club-type nightclub; Eli Thompson (Shea Whigham), looking to make peace with Nucky by working with Mickey Doyle (Paul Sparks); Richard Harrow (Jack Huston), who avenges Jimmy’s death and falls in love with a war vet’s daughter. In addition to Rosetti and O’Banion, new cast members include Stephen Root (No Country for Old Men and NewsRadio) as Gaston Means, a corrupt go-between for Nucky and U.S. Attorney General Harry Daugherty (Christopher McDonald); and Meg Chambers Steedle as Billie Kent, Nucky’s new mistress. Cast Biographies RILEY KEOUGH (Christine Reade) Riley Keough, 26, is one of Hollywood’s rising stars. At the age of 12, she appeared in her first campaign for Tommy Hilfiger and at the age of 15 she ignited a media firestorm when she walked the runway for Christian Dior. From a young age, Riley wanted to explore her talents within the film industry, and by the age of 19 she dedicated herself to developing her acting craft for the camera. In 2010, she made her big-screen debut as Marie Currie in The Runaways starring opposite Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. People took notice; shortly thereafter, she starred alongside Orlando Bloom in The Good Doctor, directed by Lance Daly. Riley’s memorable work in the film, which premiered at the Tribeca film festival in 2010, earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Milan International Film Festival in 2012. Riley’s talents landed her a title-lead as Jack in Bradley Rust Gray’s werewolf flick Jack and Diane. She also appeared alongside Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey in Magic Mike, directed by Steven Soderbergh, which grossed nearly $167 million worldwide. Further in 2011, she completed work on director Nick Cassavetes’ film Yellow, starring alongside Sienna Miller, Melanie Griffith and Ray Liota, as well as the Xan Cassavetes film Kiss of the Damned. As her camera talent evolves alongside her creative growth, so do the roles she is meant to play. Recently, she was the lead in the highly-anticipated fourth installment of director George Miller’s cult- classic Mad Max - Mad Max: Fury Road alongside a distinguished cast comprising of Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Zoe Kravitz and Nick Hoult.

  • The War Wounded of Cinema & Television
From Battle to the Screen: The War Wounded of Cinema & Television Jack Huston as the combat-veteran turned assassin Richard Harron on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire The intersection of film, television and war—like Hollywood itself— has scaled the heights of artistic achievement and sunk to the level of exploitative trash. Movies and television dramas dealing with combat have garnered awards, critical accolades, controversy and box-office success and failure alike. Whether successful or not, “war films” now form a well- known genre. Less explored in film and television, though not entirely ignored, is the idea of what happens to combat veterans after the wars have ended. Yet as early as the 1920s, the silver screen was exploring the complexity of post-combat stress, injury and illness. In his book, Shell Shock Cinema: Weimar Culture and the Wounds of War, Anton Kaes draws the direct connection between the groundbreaking artistry of the cinema in Germany’s post war Weimar Republic and the horrors experienced by many of its brightest directors in the trenches of World War I. “Many of the references that were readily understood by contemporary audiences are lost on us today,” Kaes wrote. “By examining what the films implied but did articulate, by reading ‘what was never written,’ we may be able to apprehend the forces that generated a cinema of shell shock.” Classic works such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Metropolis, though not depicting soldiers in combat, display the signs of war’s aftermath, according to Kaes. Extreme psychological distress is manifested in film as broken story lines and harsh lighting contrasts.

EnterText 1.1 NIALL PALMER “Muckfests and Revelries”: President Warren G. Harding in Fact and Fiction This article will assess the development of the posthumous reputation of President Warren Gamaliel Harding (1921-23) through an examination of key historical and literary texts in Harding historiography. The article will argue that the president’s image has been influenced by an unusual confluence of factors which have both warped history’s assessment of his administration and retarded efforts at revisionism. As a direct consequence, the stereotypical, deeply negative, portrait of Harding remains rooted in the nation’s consciousness and the “rehabilitation” afforded to many presidents by revisionist writers continues to be denied to the man still widely-regarded as the worst president of the twentieth century. “Historians,” Eugene Trani and David Wilson observed in 1977, “have not been gentle with Warren G. Harding.”1 In successive surveys of American political scientists, historians and journalists, undertaken to rank presidents by achievement, vision and leadership skills, the twenty-ninth president consistently comes last.2 The Chicago Sun- Times, publishing the findings of fifty-eight presidential historians and political scientists in November 1995, placed Warren Harding at the head of the list of “The Ten Worst” Niall Palmer: Muckfests and Revelries 155 EnterText 1.1 Presidents.3 A 1996 New York Times poll branded Harding an outright “failure,” alongside two presidents who presided over the pre-Civil War crisis, Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan. The academic merit and methodological underpinnings of such surveys are inevitably flawed. Nonetheless, in most cases, presidential status assessments are fluid, reflecting the fluctuations of contemporary opinion and occasional waves of academic revisionism.

  • BOARDWALK EMPIRE "In God We Trust" by Reginald Beltran Based
BOARDWALK EMPIRE "In God We Trust" By Reginald Beltran Based on characters by Terence Winter Reginald Beltran [email protected] FADE IN: EXT. FOREST - DAY A DEAD DOE lies on the floor. Blood oozes out of a fatal bullet wound on its side. Its open, unblinking eyes stare ahead. The rustling sound of leaves. The fresh blood attracts the attention of a hungry BEAR. It approaches the lifeless doe, and claims the kill for itself. The bear licks the fresh blood on the ground. More rustling of the undergrowth. The bear looks up and sees RICHARD HARROW, armed with a rifle, pushing past a thicket of trees and branches. For a moment, the two experienced killers stare at each other with unblinking eyes. One set belongs to a primal predator and the other set is half man, half mask. The bear stands on its two feet. It ROARS at its competitor. Richard readies his rifle for a shot, but the rifle is jammed. The bear charges. Calmly, Richard drops to one knee, examines the rifle and fixes the jam. He doesn’t miss a beat. He steadies the rifle and aims it. BANG! It’s a sniper’s mark. The bear drops to the ground immediately with a sickening THUD. Blood oozes out of a gunshot wound just under its eyes - the Richard Harrow special. EXT. FOREST - NIGHT Even with a full moon, light is sparse in these woods. Only a campfire provide sufficient light and warmth for Richard. A spit has been prepared over the fire. A skinned and gutted doe lies beside the campfire.

  • Boardwalk Empire’ Comes to Harlem
ENTERTAINMENT ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Comes to Harlem By Ericka Blount Danois on September 9, 2013 “One looks down in secret and sees many things,” Dr. Valentin Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright) deadpans, speaking to Chalky White (Michael K. Williams). “You know what I saw? A servant trying to be a king.” And so begins a dance of power, politics and personality between two of the most electrifying, enigmatic actors on the television screen today. Each time the two are on screen—together or apart—they breathed new life into tonight’s premiere episode of Boardwalk Empire season four, with dark humor, slight smiles, powerful glances, smart clothes and killer lines. Entitled “New York Sour,” the episode opened with bombast, unlike the slow boil of previous seasons. Set in 1924, we’re introduced to the tasteful opulence of Chalky White’s new club, The Onyx, decorated with sconces custom-made in Paris and shimmering, shapely dancing girls. Chalky earned an ally, and eventually a partnership to be able to open the club, with former political boss and gangster Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) by saving Nucky’s life last season. This sister club to the legendary Cotton Club in Harlem is Whites-only, but features Black acts. There are some cringe-worthy moments when Chalky, normally proud and infallible, has to deal with racism and bends over to appease his White clientele. But more often, Chalky—a Texas- born force to be reckoned with—breathes an insistent dose of much needed humor into what sometimes devolves into cheap shoot ’em up thrills this season. The meeting of the minds between Narcisse and Chalky takes root in the aftermath of a mistake by Chalky’s right hand man, Dunn Purnsley (Erik LaRay Harvey), who engages in an illicit interracial tryst that turns out to be a dramatic, racially-charged sex game gone horribly wrong.
