Biogeographic relict, extinction risk, global warming, species richness, sub-alpine prairies Abstract. During the last few decades the tree line has shifted upward on Mediterranean mountains. This has resulted in a decrease in the area of the sub-alpine prairie habitat and an increase in the threat to strictly orophilous moths that occur there. This also occurred on the Pollino Massif due to the increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall in Southern Italy. We found that a number of moths present in the alpine prairie at 2000 m appear to be absent from similar habitats at 1500–1700 m. Some of these species are thought to be at the lower latitude margin of their range. Among them, Pareulype berberata and Entephria flavicinctata are esti- mated to be the most threatened because their populations are isolated and seem to be small in size. The tops of these mountains are inhabited by specialized moth communities, which are strikingly different from those at lower altitudes on the same massif further south. The majority of the species recorded in the sub-alpine prairies studied occur most frequently and abundantly in the core area of the Pollino Massif. -

MAPPING THE SPIDER FAUNA (ARANEAE) OF FINLAND Seppo Koponen Zoological Museum, University of Turku, FI-20014 Turku, Finland Abstract — The history of research on the spider fauna of Finland is briefly dealt with. The first list of spiders from Finland was published by Nordmann in 1863 and included 140 species; the well-known list of Palmgren (1977) included 595 species and the present (internet) checklist contains ca. 640 species. A recent study project on Finnish spiders and their distribution patterns (“The Spider Fauna of Finland”) is also discussed. Key words: Araneae, spiders, fauna, distribution, research history, threatened species, Finland INTRODUCTION The area of Finland is about 338000 km2, and the country is situated between 60° and 70° N latitude. Most of Finland belongs to the boreal coniferous forest (taiga) zone, the southwestern corner to the hemiboreal zone, and the northernmost parts to the sub-arctic zone. About 80% of Finland can be classified as lowland, lying below 200 m. The highest point of the country is situated in Lapland: Halti, 1328 m a.s.l., in the northwesternmost corner of Finland. The known spider fauna of Finland consists of about 640 species (Koponen, 2007). For comparison, the number of spiders reported from neighboring coun- tries, Sweden (Almquist, 2006) and Norway (Artsdatabanken, 2006), is 716 and 562, respectively. -

A lectotype of Psecadia discrepitella Rebel, 1901 is designated and transferred from the collection of St. Petersburg State University to the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg, Russia). Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

Republicii 48, 3400 Cluj-Napoca, Rumänien Die Noctuiden Siebenbürgens sind faunistisch relativ gut erforscht ; sie sind jedoch erst relativ schlecht in bioökologischer und zoogeographischer Hinsicht untersucht (Räkosy, 1982 ; Räkosy & Schneider, 1985). Das untersuchte Biotop Bad Ocna Sibiului liegt 17 km nordwestlich von Sibiu, auf 45° 52' nördlicher Breite und 24° 05' östlicher Länge auf durchschnittlich 400 m ü.M. Die Ortschaft liegt in einer ausgedehnten Hügellandschaft, die im Laufe der Zeit durch Auslaugen ihrer Salzlager einer starken Verkarstung ausgesetzt war. Das kontinental-gemässige Klima unterliegt tropischen Einflüssen, was zu einer teilweisen Versteppung des Boden geführt hat. Die mittlere Jahrestemperatur beträgt 8.8° C, mit einem Minimum von -4.2° C im Januar und einem Maxi- mum von 19.3° C im Juli. Die jährliche Niederschlagsmenge beträgt im Mittel 638 mm. Von ökologisch wesentlicher Bedeutung ist die in der Tiefe vorkommende Salzablagerung, welche in der Länge 1300 m und in der Dicke 600 m misst. -
On the Genus Pseudolynchia Bequaert

Maa2 Abstract: Pseudolynchia serratipes from New Guinea is described as new. Known species are redescribed together with suggestion of several new characters including sensoria on hind tibiae and sensilla on hind tarsi. A new key to species and remarks on the inter- and intrageneric relationships are appended. Since erected in 1926, Pseudolynchia has been the subject of several regional and world revisions (Bequaert 1926 b, 1935 a, 1938 d, 1955; Maa 1963; Theodor & Oldroyd 1964). Comprehensive bibliographies and digest of literature on the biology of the species have also been provided by Bequaert (1953 a, 1953 b, 1955). The following notes include chiefly a description of an unusual new species, and redescriptions of known ones. Generic Characters. To the detailed descriptions by Bequaert (1955) and Theodor et al (1964), the following points may be added: Hind tibia with a group of large sensoria on posterior surface near apex. Segments 2 to 4 of hind tarsus slightly to strongly asymmetrical, each with 2 longitudinal series of sensilla. Parameres ($) un usually strongly articulated with aedeagal apodeme and gonocoxal base, their common basal margin deeply concave; aedeagal apodeme in sexually matured 8 quite long and narrow in lateral view. Male differing from 9 in having wing shorter and broader in proportion, fore and mid tarsi ventrally with more apical spines, segment 1 of mid tarsus ventrally with a small patch of short, stout, and either sharp or peg-like spines (absent in 9), tergite 5 almost always represented by a pair of small transverse plates (not definable in 9). -
