The pilings that are out there, that you have seen every time you have come here to this beach, are left over from the original pier that was built when the plantation was organized. They were out here in this remote area and they needed to get the sugar to market, and so that was built in order to get the sugar, and whatever else they were growing, to Honolulu to the markets. Aloha Chair Ito, Vice Chair Tokioka and members of the committee, on behalf of the Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association and its 700-plus members we offer strong support for HCR 70 which would request of the US Postal Service to issue a commemorative postage stamp in honor of Alfred Apaka, legendary Hawaiian entertainer and showman. As a state we pride ourselves on our Native Hawaiian culture and our Aloha spirit, two very unique features that help set us apart from the rest of the world. One very important aspect of our culture is and has been our islands’ music, a genre that has helped set the stage for Hawai‘i as a global destination. We have seen the pioneers of our state’s music from Don Ho to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and others who have made a name for themselves locally, nationally, and internationally. But before these gentlemen hit the scene there was another musical legend, Alfred Apaka, the pioneer who first introduced the world to Hawai‘i’s music. Alfred Apaka, frequently known as the Golden Voice of Hawai‘i, has created a legacy for himself as he headlined venues such as the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the Moana Surfrider, Don at the Beachcomber, and Kaiser’s Hawaiian Village where he entertained thousands of visitors and locals alike.

Mormon Influences on the Waikīkī Entertainment Scene by Ishmael W. Stagner, II Before we can discuss the influence of Mormon Hawaiians on the Waikīkī music scene, we need to understand a few things about the development of Hawaiian music and its relationship to things developing in Waikīkī. It is normally thought that the apex of Hawaiian entertaining is being able to entertain on a steady basis in a Waikīkī showroom, or venue. However, this has not always been the case, especially as this relates to the Waikīkī experience. In fact, we need to go back only to the post World War II period to see that entertaining in Waikīkī, especially on a steady basis, was both rare and limited to a very few selected entertainers, most of whom, surprisingly, were not Hawaiian. There were a number of reasons for this, but the main reason for the scarcity of Hawaiian, or Polynesian entertainers in Waikīkī in any great number, goes back to the history of Waikīkī itself. At the turn of the 20th century, Waikīkī was still mostly a swamp, filled with taro patches, rice paddies and fish ponds. We have only to look at the pictures of Ray Jerome Baker, the great photographer of early 20th century Honolulu, to see that Waikīkī was, first and foremost, a bread basket area whose lowlands were the delta areas for the run-off waters of Mānoa, Pauoa, and Pālolo streams. As such, Waikīkī fed much of what we call East Oahu, and rivaled the food production and water-storage capacities of better-known farming areas such as Kāne‘ohe, Kahalu‘u and Waiāhole.

IMADA University of California, Los Angeles A GROUP OF INFLUENTIAL HAWAIIANS—A PRINCESS, A FAMED HULA DANCER, AND A composer—gathered at a Honolulu home in 1919 to judge a private hula performance. David and Lydia Bray, a young Hawaiian couple who were dancers themselves, had staged this unofficial “hula trial.” All we know is that girls from the ages of eight to fourteen presented their hula repertoire before the panel. Responding to nearly a century of denigration of hula by Christian missionaries, the Brays sought to reinsert hula into everyday public life. Was hula truly vulgar and obscene, as many haole (white) missionaries and Christian Hawaiians asserted? At the end of the presentation, the judges conferred and delivered a “not guilty” verdict. The hula was clean; its practitioners should not fear performing before Hawaiian and American audiences. Less than twenty years later, another kind of hula “trial” entertained Hawai‘i. A group of judges assembled again, except this time they had before them the task of choosing the best hula dancer in the islands. Sponsored by Hollywood’s Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) and the Hawai‘i-based Consolidated Amusement Company, the “Inter- Island Hula Contest” sought to crown a “hula queen” in 1938. In the “greatest hula contest ever staged in the Islands,” nearly five hundred young Hawaiian women competed for the title for more than a month, going through several rounds of competition.1 Each hoped to win the Adria L.

From the mid-1930s until the 1960s, Hawaiian- and Polynesian-themed showrooms, restaurants, bars and hotels sprang up around the country. Nearly every large city had one. The first was at the Lexington Hotel in New York City, which opened a Hawaiian Room 75 years ago next week on June 23, courtesy lexington hotelThe Hawaiian Room in New York's Lexington Hotel was the first of its kind on the mainland in 1937. 1937. Soon, however, nearly every large city had a Hawaiian- or Polynesian-themed restaurant or bar. The Hawaiian Room's The hotel is on Lexington Avenue and 48th Street in Midtown performers included Ray Kinney, his orchestra and the Aloha Manhattan. Charles Rochester was the manager when it opened, Maids. and it had a large, unused basement. Rochester decided to open a Hawaii-themed restaurant there. Adria Imada, an assistant professor of ethnic studies at the University of California, San Diego, wrote in her journal article "Hawaiians on Tour: Hula Circuits through the American Empire" that the Hawaiian Room was a "supper club for dining, dancing and live performance. Walking into the large circular room decorated with tropical palms and murals of Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach, patrons were greeted with a flower lei, albeit a paper one." The Hawaiian Room offered twice the salary Hawaiian entertainers could earn at home.
