It is principally an industrial city with the manufacture of furniture its leading industry, being the largest producer of wooden furniture in the south and one of the largest in the entire United States. Between 1875 and 1900, however, Lenoir was known as a summer resort and had many summer visitors, while all of those who went to Blowing Rock left the train at Lenoir and drove the 23 miles by road up the mountain in horse drawn hacks. INDUSTRY It was during this period, however, that the manufacture of furniture first started in Lenoir, since there were many skilled cabinet makers in this area, the descendants of skilled artisans who has been brought over from England by the wealthy plantation owners in Happy Valley and the Yadkin Valley to build the furniture for the homes built in this valley shortly after the Revolution. Several of these beautiful old homes, con- taining the original hand-made furniture, are still standing and in use by the descendants of the families who built them. By 1890 Lenoir was already well-known as a furniture manufacturing center and this industry has increased steadily until at the present time there are ten large furniture manufacturing plants, two veneer plants, two mirror plants, one paper box and one packing materials concern, and several other concerns that supply materials for the furniture indus- try. In all, there are some 26 different industries operated in Lenoir employing more than 6,000 persons. Of these the furniture industry alone employs more than 4,000 persons, a good many of these now being women, and the payroll of the furniture industry amounts to ap- proximately $100,000 a week or more than $5,000,000 a year. There are also six cotton spinning mills in Lenoir and the Lenoir area which employ some 1,000 persons, mostly women. There are hosiery mills, machine shops, flour mills, sawmills, millwork plants and other miscellaneous industries. POPULATION The population of Lenoir is 7,603 within the city limits according to the 1940 census, while the population of Caldwell county is 35,795. The (Continued on Page Eight) PREFACE PREFACE (Continued from Page Seven) population of the two townships in which Lenoir is located is 18,119. Accordingly, the population of Lenoir and the areas immediately sur- lounding it is conservatively estimated at more than 12,000 persons, while the trading area is approximately between 20,000 and 25,000 per- sons. Population Greater Lenoir, 12,124 (1943 Directory Census). The difference between the census population and the population living in and adjacent to Lenoir is due to the fact that many of the indus- tries are located outside the city limits with many of those employed in these plants living outside the city limits or on small farms nearby. The increase in population of Lenoir from 1930 to 1940 was 14 per cent according to the 1940 census, while the population in Caldwell county during this same period increased 27.8 per cent. TRANSPORTATION Lenoir is served by the Carolina and Northwestern Railway branch of the Southern Railway extending from Chester, S. C, where it con- nects with the Seaboard Airline Railway to Lenoir via Gastonia, Lincoln- ion and Hickory. In addition, Lenoir is served by five hard-surfaced state and federal highways which afford frequent bus and freight trans- portation. Six large trucking concerns operate out of Lenoir either as common carriers or contract haulers. Regular bus service to all points in the United States is provided by the Atlantic Greyhound lines and the Queen City Coach Company. Through rail passenger service to New York, Chicago and all other points is available from Hickory over the Southern Railway and by the Pennsylvania Central Air Lines. The commercial air service out of Hickory has been suspended for the dura- tion of the war but will be resumed as soon as the war is over. TAXES The tax rate in the city of Lenoir for all purposes is $1.25 for each $100 valuation, for which $1.00 is for city purposes and 25 cents for school purposes. The county tax rate is $1.00 on each $100 valuation for all county purposes. Property is assessed at approximately 75% of its real value for taxation purposes for both the city and county. No state property tax is levied in North Carolina. FIRE PROTECTION Due to the fact that Lenoir has one of the most modern and well- equipped volunteer fire departments in the United States, fire losses (Continued on Page 11) — MISCELLANEOUS DIRECTORY MILLER'S LENOIR North Carolina Miscellaneous Directory 1943-1944 Containing Valuable Information Concerning Federal State, and Local Governments.
