Our Great Lakes consistently deliver outstanding fishing for salmon and steelhead and it doesn’t stop there. In fact, New York is home to four of the Bassmaster’s top 50 bass lakes, drawing anglers from around the globe to come and experience great smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing. The crystal clear lakes and streams of the Adirondack and Catskill parks make New York home to the very best fly fishing east of the Rockies. Add abundant walleye, panfish, trout and trophy muskellunge and northern pike to the mix, and New York is clearly a state of angling opportunity. Fishing is a wonderful way to reconnect with the outdoors. Here in New York, we are working hard to make the sport more accessible and affordable to all. Over the past five years, we have invested more than $6 million, renovating existing boat launches and developing new ones across the state. This is in addition to the 50 new projects begun in 2014 that will make it easier for all outdoors enthusiasts to access the woods and waters of New York. Our 12 DEC fish hatcheries produce 900,000 pounds of fish each year to increase fish populations and expand and improve angling opportunities. -

Contact your State Natural Heritage Description: Cool, slow-moving, headwaters and creeks of low-moderate elevation flat, marshy settings. These small streams of moderate to low elevations occur on flats or very gentle slopes in watersheds less than 39 sq.mi in size. The cool slow-moving waters may have high turbidity and be somewhat poorly oxygenated. Instream habitats are dominated by glide-pool and ripple-dune systems with runs interspersed by pools and a few short or no distinct riffles. Bed materials are predominenly sands, silt, and only isolated amounts of gravel. Within Kthe United States, Kentucky’s native freshwater fish diversity is exceeded only by Alabama and Tennessee. This high diversity of native fishes corresponds to an abun- dance of water bodies and wide variety of aquatic habitats across the state – from swift upland streams to large sluggish rivers, oxbow lakes, and wetlands. Approximately 25 species are most frequently caught by anglers either for sport or food. Many of these species occur in streams and rivers statewide, while several are routinely stocked in public and private water bodies across the state, especially ponds and reservoirs. The largest proportion of Kentucky’s fish fauna (80%) includes darters, minnows, suckers, madtoms, smaller sunfishes, and other groups (e.g., lam- preys) that are rarely seen by most people. -

Sometimes, the same individual can be diurnal at first and then switch to nocturnalism, or vice-versa. This review examines the factors that are associated with such plasticity. It covers the breakdown of activity rhythms during migration, spawning, and the parental phase; reversals of activity patterns during ontogeny or from one season to the next; effects of light intensity, temperature, predation risk, shoal size, food availability, and intraspecific competition. -

Aquatic Species Mapping in North Carolina Using Maxent Mark Endries U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Field Office, Asheville North Carolina INTRODUCTION The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is to work with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The Service is the lead governmental agency involved in the recovery of federally endangered and threatened species in freshwater and terrestrial habitats. To meet its recovery and protection goals, the Service: (1) works with other federal agencies to minimize or eliminate impacts to fish, wildlife, and plants from projects they authorize, fund, or carry out; (2) supports the improvement of fish and wildlife habitat on private land through technical and financial assistance; and (3) provides scientific knowledge and analyses to help guide the conservation, development, and management of the Nation’s fish and wildlife resources. Freshwater ecosystems present unique management challenges due to their linear spatial orientation and their association with upland habitat variables. On broad scales, the movement of aquatic species within the stream environment is limited to upstream and downstream migration. The inability of aquatic species to circumnavigate man-made obstacles causes them to be particularly vulnerable to habitat fragmentation. Habitat fragmentation has a major influence on species distribution and complicates distribution mapping. To better understand the spatial distributions of freshwater aquatic species in North Carolina, the Service created predictive habitat maps for 226 different aquatic species using geographic information systems (GIS) and maximum entropy (Maxent) modeling. These maps were derived by comparing known species occurrences with a suite of stream- or land-cover-derived environmental variables. -

POESTEN KILL FACT SHEET: WATER QUALITY INTRODUCTION Water quality monitoring is an incredibly vital component of stream assessments. Selecting what parameters to include in a stream survey can be challenging, given all the options. However, relatively simple and inexpensive tests, such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and water clarity, can provide a tremendous amount of information on overall stream health. By understanding what each parameter measures, its relative importance in an aquatic ecosystem, and how parameters may interact with each other in the natural environment, researchers and citizen scientists can better predict and understand the responses of aquatic organisms. And in doing so, one can make more informed assessments of stream health and prioritize monitoring, restoration, and/or conservation efforts. Thus, an invested interest in water quality is an invested interest in the health, diversity, and abundance of biota. Water quality includes a number of parameters that environmental scientists use to measure the “health” and character of natural waters. Water quality has a direct relationship with the biota living within the water body. Technicians, scientists, and citizens can measure physical and chemical measurements directly in the field (in- situ) or via laboratory analysis. Kishwaukee River Fisheries Fact Sheet
Kishwaukee River Fisheries Fact Sheet Location - The Kishwaukee River Basin covers an area of approximately 1,218 square miles spanning seven counties in northern Illinois, including parts of Boone, McHenry, Kane, DeKalb, Ogle, and small parts of Lee and Winnebago counties. The mainstem of the river empties into the Rock River about 3 miles south of Rockford, Illinois. It is formed by two branches which unite just south and west of Cherry Valley, IL. The North Branch arises in east-central McHenry County and flows to the west to near Rockford, where it turns south before uniting with the South Branch. The South Branch has its origin on a moraine just north of Shabbona. It flows northeasterly to the village of Genoa, where it turns to the northwest before uniting with the North Branch. The two branches thus united, then flow only a short distance before emptying into the Rock River. Status of the Sport Fishery – More than 60 species of fish have been found in the Kishwaukee River Basin, including several species of sport fish. The most sought after of the sport fish are the smallmouth bass and channel catfish, with both found abundantly and of good size. Panfish such as bluegill and rock bass can be found in some areas of the river, along with largemouth bass. Northern pike can also be found in several areas but in low numbers. Smallmouth Bass – Smallmouth bass are common and abundant in the Kishwaukee River. In 2016 a basin wide survey was conducted on the Kishwaukee River. A total of 67 smallmouth bass were collected during this survey with the largest number collected downstream of the Belvidere Dam, west of Belvidere, Illinois.
