Nalven, Editor From the President’s Pockets “If you’re not hitting some wrong notes, you’re probably not playing hard enough.” ~John Coltrane, jazz saxophonist I play hard. As is evident from the sprain and fracture I sustained on my left foot due to a poorly played ground ball in a softball game just mere days after the WCN Conference this year. I don’t always injure myself when I play ball, but I play not worrying about whether I will. I think about this as we approach another New Year. Have I hit some wrong notes? Have I been playing hard enough? It’s interesting to think that the two might be intertwined"that giving it my all may not necessarily result in the “right notes”, but rather some other unintentioned sound. And that these “wrong notes” might just be the outcome that indicates that we’re living our lives to the fullest. My rabbi has told a story about a time when he facetiously told his piano tuner that he didn’t have to tune the whole piano, only whatever notes were needed to play the four songs from Les Miserables that he knows. The tuner responded, “No, I’ll need to tune all of them, because when you play those four songs, you may hit some wrong notes.” We may hit some wrong notes this year, yet they may have been by-products of all the right notes that we have tried so hard to play.

The museum, which opened 20 years ago, will now be known as The Holocaust Education and Resource Center of Rhode Island. May-Ronny Zeidman, a Warwick resident and member of Temple Am David, has been named executive director, after serving most recently as administrator at the museum. The Center teaches the history of the Holocaust and serves as a memorial to its victims. "Our mission is to promote human dignity, universal justice and prevent bigotry and genocide," Zeidman said. She said the center, rather than functioning as a museum to house artifacts and mount exhibitions - although they have and do both - is primarily an educational resource for teach­ ers, librarians and students from middle school through college. Fundamentally, it creates awareness and teaches the history of the Holocaust to diverse groups, framing it within the context of global issues, such as the genocide in Darfur, today. One very effective program brings docents and Holocaust sur­ vivors into classrooms to tell their story; over 6,000 studems a year participate. But with each year, the number of survivors decreases; currently there are seven who volunteer to speak. Shoshannah was an internationally acclaimed composer, improvisational pianist, piano teacher, piano therapist, and recording artist who used all of her many gifts to help and heal others. A recognized child prodigy, she began composing at age six and by age nine was winning classical piano competitions and appearing in Carnegie Hall. Shoshannah devoted her life to bringing spiritual unity, peace and compassion to the world through music. The daughter of a Holocaust survivor, Shoshannah was born and raised in Queens, NY. She graduated from California Institute of the Arts where she studied with legendary concert pianist and composer, Leonid Hambro. Shoshannah released four recordings of her healing music and founded an innovative approach to music therapy she called, “Piano Therapy,” which taught how to meaningfully create and improvise music in the moment, free of judgment. She was also a Certified Holistic Nutritionist, Health Coach and MindBody Therapist.
