High rates of both hatching failure (56%) and nestling mortality (39%) in the first clutch made this the least successful breeding season since translocation in 2005. Overall 34% of eggs survived to fledge, compared to 52% and 58% in 2005-06 and 2006-07 respectively. Samples collected from 34 live and 25 dead nestlings were screened for evidence of disease. Bacterial and fungal pathogens were isolated from gastrointestinal swabs but there was no evidence of coccidia or other intestinal parasites in faecal samples. There was no evidence of significant abnormalities in the blood collected from hihi prior to fledging in the haematological parameters tested, and all blood samples were negative for malarial parasites.

ABSTRACT A species list of hard corals recorded in subtidal and reef flat habitats of the Darwin region is presented. This is the first published list of the species of corals from the Darwin area, with a total of 125 scleractinian and non-scleractinian calcareous coral species belonging to 17 families and 47 genera, including one hydrozoan and one octocoral. The Faviidae is the family represented by the highest number of genera and species while relatively high numbers of species from the families Acroporidae and Poritidae are also present in the Darwin region. Similar numbers of species are recorded from the reef flat and the subtidal zone. Fewer species, but similar propor­ tions of all major genera, are recorded from each family in Darwin compared with the east and west coasts of Australia. PERSONAL RECOLLECTIONS OF THE BOMBING OF DARWIN - 1942 by George W Boniface It is now 1987 some forty-five years since Darwin was bombed by Japanese forces on 19 February, 1942. I have during this time felt I should have set down the events I experienced on that day, and during the three months leading up to that horrific event. Recollections are beginning to fade, so assisted by some notes jotted down in 1943, the following is what I recall of that eventful time. ************ Records show that theM. V. Neptuna, a ship some 6,000 tons gross and owned by Burns Philp Line, was at Kowloon, the port of Hong Kong on 24 November, 1941 just thirteen days before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour and entered the war against the Allies. At this time I was 5th Engineer and in charge of a "watch" of main engines and boilers from 8.00 am to 12.00 midday and 8.00 pm to 12 .00 midnight; that is, 4 hours on duty and 8 hours off. During Neptuna's stay in Hong Kong on previous voyages, I had the acquaintance of George Rogers who was the manager of Hong Kong tramways and when I was in Hong Kong he would show me around and extend to me the hospitality of his home. His wife and child had been evacuated to Australia in 1941 . George was taken prisoner by the Japanese when they invaded the Colony and he later died of Beri-Beri in Stanley prison camp, Hong Kong.

    From the President As the world plunges deeper into pandemic tragedy Naval Historical Society volunteers will do their utmost to continue services as best, they can. With many volunteers used to working remotely, eighty percent of our services are unaffected. However, closure of our office and cessation of Garden Island history tours will cause financial stress and some delay in mailing products to our valued customers. On the bright side, it is a pleasure to bring you our 40th edition of Call the Hands. This edition has a focus on catapult launched naval aircraft and their operation by R.A.A.F. personnel of No. 9 Squadron between 1935 and 1949. There is a significant amount of detail in the interesting ‘video of the month’ on cruiser launch and recovery operations as well as a table detailing the fate of various Seagull V aircraft operated by No. 9 Squadron. A number of whom lost their lives at sea in support of naval operations. Three occasional papers accompany this edition of Call the Hands. OP 75 on RAN involvement in the Vietnam War coincides with the 45th anniversary of the end of that War on 20 April 1975. Our thanks to Captain Ralph T. Derbidge MBE RAN Rtd for providing the paper. The second paper by Greg Swinden looks at the impact of the Spanish Influenza Epidemic of 1918-19 on the RAN. OP 76 by Dennis Weatherall examines the development and operations of HMAS Assault as an amphibious operations training establishment during WW2.
