Five divisions, each of eight engines, played two or more ‘DRR’ double round robin phases each, with promotions and relegations following. Classic tempi gradually lengthened and the Premier division’s top two engines played a 100-game match to determine the Grand Champion. The strategy for the selection of mandated openings was finessed from division to division.

    Title: Proposal to Encode Heterodox Chess Symbols in the UCS Source: Garth Wallace Status: Individual Contribution Date: 2016-10-25 Introduction The UCS contains symbols for the game of chess in the Miscellaneous Symbols block. These are used in figurine notation, a common variation on algebraic notation in which pieces are represented in running text using the same symbols as are found in diagrams. While the symbols already encoded in Unicode are sufficient for use in the orthodox game, they are insufficient for many chess problems and variant games, which make use of extended sets. 1. Fairy chess problems The presentation of chess positions as puzzles to be solved predates the existence of the modern game, dating back to the mansūbāt composed for shatranj, the Muslim predecessor of chess. In modern chess problems, a position is provided along with a stipulation such as “white to move and mate in two”, and the solver is tasked with finding a move (called a “key”) that satisfies the stipulation regardless of a hypothetical opposing player’s moves in response. These solutions are given in the same notation as lines of play in over-the-board games: typically algebraic notation, using abbreviations for the names of pieces, or figurine algebraic notation. Problem composers have not limited themselves to the materials of the conventional game, but have experimented with different board sizes and geometries, altered rules, goals other than checkmate, and different pieces. Problems that diverge from the standard game comprise a genre called “fairy chess”. Thomas Rayner Dawson, known as the “father of fairy chess”, pop- ularized the genre in the early 20th century.

We continue our study of the chess-like games defined as the class of Simplified Boardgames. We present an algorithm generating natural language descriptions of piece movements that can be used as a tool not only for explaining them to the human player, but also for the task of procedural game generation using an evolutionary approach. We test our algorithm on some existing human-made and procedurally generated chess-like games. 1 Introduction The task of Procedural Content Generation (PCG) [1] is to create digital content using algorithmic methods. In particular, the domain of games is the area, where PCG is used for creating various elements including names, maps, textures, music, enemies, or even missions. The most sophisticated and complex goal is to create the complete rules of a game [2–4]. Designing a game generation algorithm requires restricting the set of possible games to some well defined domain. This places the task into the area of General Game Playing, i.e. the art of designing programs which can play any game from some fixed class of games. The use of PCG in General Game Playing begins with the Pell’s Metagame system [5], describing the so-called Symmetric Chess-like Games. The evaluation of the quality of generated games was left entirely for the human expert.

    № 4 АПРЕЛЬ 2006 APRIL ПОЧТОВЫЙ ЯЩИК / POST BOX Волшебная сказка о летящих конях В цирк на проспекте Вернадского мы попали в тот день случайно: хотелось детям доставить удовольствие, взяли билеты, оказались на конкурсном пока- зе Всемирного фестиваля циркового искусства «Идол». И не прогадали: пред- ставление с участием молодых звезд мировой арены было великолепным. Но когда последним номером программы выступали туркменские джигиты, вос- торгу нашему не было предела. На одних только коней-ахалтекинцев можно было смотреть как на произве- дение высокого искусства – какая стать, какие изгибы шеи, какая природная гармония! А уж какие пируэты выделывали всадники в колоритных националь- ных костюмах, просто не поддается описанию! Все трюки выполнялись на какой-то запредельной скорости – взгляд не поспевал за полетом лошадей по кругу. Молодые ребята, девушки и даже совсем юный мальчуган управлялись с лошадьми так, будто всю жизнь провели в седле. Вместе со зрителями мы аплодировали туркменским всадникам так, что потом болели ладони. И очень не хотелось расставаться с артистами, пода- рившими нам веру в волшебную сказку о летящих конях. Спасибо им за велико- лепное мастерство, за бережное сохранение лучших народных традиций! Семья Никифоровых Москва Fairy tale about flying horses That day we casually happened to be in the Circus on Vernadsky Prospekt: we bought tickets for children to make their day and appeared on competitive show of International Circus Festival «Idol». As it turned out, this was our forte: there was magnificent performance with participation of young stars of the world circus. Our delight exceeded expectations when we saw the last programme number – Turkmen horsemen. One can admire Akhal-Teke horses like objects of the art – what a point, what neck tournure, what natural harmony! Complex tricks of riders in colorful nation- al outfits – it baffles all description! All tricks were performed at unprecedent- ed speed, motions of the horses were too fast for the eyes to follow.

Congratulations to the Cub Scouts who are celebrating their Centenary in 2016. SPRING 2016 1 Editorial So here we are making our way through 2016, which in Scouting terms is recognised as the Centenary of the founding of the Wolf Cubs (or Cub Scouts as they are now known). In my District of Chelmsford we have started the celebrations with a special Founders’ Day activity and Scouts’ Own which took place on Saturday 20th February. There were 157 Cubs present and I understand that between them they managed to achieve over 300 badges during what was a quite intensive afternoon. My personal base was explaining the history of Cub Scouting and I exhibited Uniforms, stamps, postcards, badges and books. There was quite a surprising amount of interest with some of the young people standing with eyes wide open when I mentioned how it had all started. (The only down side to the day was that I managed to leave my car with its lights on and had to wait for a service engineer to attend and give me a jump start - still that was only 25 minutes - thanks AA.) In the summer we are holding a much larger weekend event with cubs from all over the County of Essex camping from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. Again I will be putting on a history base for the Saturday and will be assisted by our Chairman so we are hoping to attract some potential new members - if not from the Cubs then from their Leaders.

    THE TURKIC WORLD WILL CELEBRATE THE YEAR OF YOUTH Astana hosted the third meeting of the Ministers in charge of Youth and Sports of the Turkic Council. The meeting is aimed at expanding cooperation and strengthening relations between the youth of the Turkic-speaking states. Secretary General of the Turkic Council Baghdat Amreyev, Minister of Social Development of Kazakhstan Darkhan Kaletayev, Minister of Youth and Sport of Turkey Mehmet Kasapoglu, Director of the State Agency for Youth, Physical Culture and Sports of Kyrgyzstan Kanat Amankulov, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport of Azerbaijan Ismail Ismailov, President of the International Turkic Academy Darkhan Kydyrali and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkey to Kazakhstan Nevzat Uyanik attended the meeting. The issues of holding in 2019the II Forum of Young Leaders of the Turkic Council, the IV International Youth Camp and the III International Youth Festival of the Turkic Council were discussed at the meeting. Opening the meeting, Secretary General Baghdat Amreyev thanked the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Social Development for the support of the events of the Turkic Council. The Secretary-General also noted that the participants of the meeting supported the idea of creating a unified youth platform for the youth of Turkic-speaking states and that it was time to embark on the process of its implementation. “At the Turkic Council summit held in Kyrgyzstan, the heads of state have unanimously agreed to strengthen cooperation between youth organizations and take measures to protect young people from radical ideas. The creation of a single youth platform of Turkic-speaking countries is a unique opportunity to achieve the goals set by the leaders of member states,” said Baghdat Amreyev.
