I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract This study examines combat operations from the 2003 invasion of Iraq War from the “ground up.” It utilizes unique first-person accounts that offer insights into the realities of modern warfare which include effects on soldiers, the local population, and journalists who were tasked with reporting on the action. It affirms the value of media embedding to the historian, as hundreds of journalists witnessed major combat operations firsthand. This line of argument stands in stark contrast to other academic assessments of the embedding program, which have criticized it by claiming media bias and military censorship. Here, an examination of the cultural and social dynamics of an army at war provides agency to soldiers, combat reporters, and innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

Andrew Hunt is an associate professor of history at the University of Waterloo. He received his BA and Ph.D. from the University of Utah. He is the author of two books, The Turning: A History of Vietnam Veterans Against the War (New York: New York University Press, 1999) and David Dellinger: The Life and Times of a Nonviolent Revolutionary (New York: New York University 30 th Anniversary Press, 2006), and he is the coauthor (with Peter Halloran) of The 1980s: A Social History . Bush, Zimmerman considered the anti-Iraq War movement a success. “Unlike the antiwar movement in the sixties,” he wrote, “the move- ment against the war in Iraq learned to work within the mainstream, avoid extremist tactics and rhetoric, raise money at the grass roots, and find messaging that united young and old, rich and poor, students and workers” (421). It is hard to find fault with Troublemaker. This is memoir at its best, brilliantly told, and ultimately one of the most fulfilling partici- pant-memoir histories ever written. Lists of iconic sixties activists do not typically include Bill Zimmerman. That is too bad. They should. One can only hope that Zimmerman’s odyssey through these eventful years of American history will correct that major flaw in our collective understanding of the past. One story about the end of the Cold War starts with Ronald Reagan’s dramatic 1987 challenge at the Brandenburg Gate: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Sure enough, two and a half years later, dancing East and West Germans, with Gorbachev’s assent, began tearing down the Berlin Wall. One after anotHer, eacH city is destroyed by one of the seemingly endless Hail of nukes until all tHat remains is a desolate wasteland. A brigHt ligHt flasHes and the words “The End” write across the screen. You have lost but are free to put another quarter into tHe macHine and defend tHe world again. This scene is from the arcade game Missile Command (1980) in which tHe player must defend six cities from endless waves of smart bombs, ICBMs and MIRVs.1 WHile a source of entertainment in Missile Command, the threat of nuclear war was terrifyingly real for tHe average American citizen during the Cold War.
