  • Misunderstood and Forgotten: the Greek Naval Mutiny of April 1944 Mark C
Misunderstood and Forgotten 367 Misunderstood and Forgotten: The Greek Naval Mutiny of April 1944 Mark C. Jones Abstract After being driven from Greece by the German military in 1941, the Royal Hellenic Navy (RHN) operated alongside Britain’s Royal Navy (RN) from bases in Egypt, Lebanon, and Malta. In April 1944 the RHN experienced a widespread mutiny, which began in Alexandria, Egypt, over the political composition of the Greek government. This essay explores the importance of the Alexandria mutiny to the RHN. It investigates the role of the navy in the royalist/republican rivalry of the 1920s–1930s, the wartime return to service of republican officers, the RHN’s operations under British direction in the eastern Mediterranean, the political orientation of the government-in-exile, disturbances in the RHN prior to the mutiny, the events of the mutiny itself, the aftermath of the mutiny, how the mutiny affected the RN-RHN relationship, and the significance of the mutiny within the context of naval history in general. Wartime RN records held at the Public Record Office outside London, United States Navy intelligence reports held at the National Archives and Records Administration at College Park, Maryland, as well as unpublished and published secondary sources, provide the basis of this investigation. Multinational naval operations are a common occurrence in today’s world. While the United States Navy is presently the most powerful in the world, it frequently operates with ships from allied navies to reach its security goals. Such allied cooperation dates back to World War II when escort groups in the Battle of the Atlantic were composed of ships from the U.S., Canadian, and Royal Navies along with a handful of Polish, Free French, Norwegian, and Dutch ships.

Issue: The Palestinian Economy The Palestinian Economy By: Sara Toth Stub Pub. Date: March 26, 2018 Access Date: September 30, 2021 DOI: 10.1177/237455680410.n1 Source URL: http://businessresearcher.sagepub.com/sbr-1946-106230-2884484/20180326/the-palestinian-economy ©2021 SAGE Publishing, Inc. All Rights Reserved. ©2021 SAGE Publishing, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Can it grow in the absence of peace? Executive Summary The Palestinian economy in the West Bank and Gaza is weighed down by a lack of modern infrastructure, Israeli restrictions on the flow of goods and people and internal political conflict. The result is weak economic growth and high unemployment, especially among younger Palestinians. The consequences of this economic stagnation could include increased regional instability and a greater risk of violence. The key to progress ultimately lies in finding a political solution to the decades-old conflict between Palestinians and Israel, which could make it easier to attract investment. But the peace process is stalled, and the Trump administration’s decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem has undermined the chances that the United States can broker a deal between Israeli and Palestinian leaders. Key takeaways include: Palestinian GDP, adjusted for inflation, is about the same as in 1999. The little economic growth that has occurred in recent years was fueled mainly by international aid money, which is declining as countries around the world change their budget priorities. The Palestinian economy depends mostly on the production of building materials, information technology, agriculture, tourism and banking. Ik kwam langzaam uit een periode van rouw, en probeerde niet alleen de dood van mijn beste vriend (september 2004) te begrijpen, maar ook te accepteren. Ik kwam terecht in 'n total burn-out.

City Branding: Part 2: Observation Towers Worldwide Architectural Icons Make Cities Famous What’s Your City’s Claim to Fame? By Jeff Coy, ISHC Paris was the world’s most-visited city in 2010 with 15.1 million international arrivals, according to the World Tourism Organization, followed by London and New York City. What’s Paris got that your city hasn’t got? Is it the nickname the City of Love? Is it the slogan Liberty Started Here or the idea that Life is an Art with images of famous artists like Monet, Modigliani, Dali, da Vinci, Picasso, Braque and Klee? Is it the Cole Porter song, I Love Paris, sung by Frank Sinatra? Is it the movie American in Paris? Is it the fact that Paris has numerous architectural icons that sum up the city’s identity and image --- the Eiffel Tower, Arch of Triumph, Notre Dame Cathedral, Moulin Rouge and Palace of Versailles? Do cities need icons, songs, slogans and nicknames to become famous? Or do famous cities simply attract more attention from architects, artists, wordsmiths and ad agencies? Certainly, having an architectural icon, such as the Eiffel Tower, built in 1889, put Paris on the world map. But all these other things were added to make the identity and image. As a result, international tourists spent $46.3 billion in France in 2010. What’s your city’s claim to fame? Does it have an architectural icon? World’s Most Famous City Icons Beyond nicknames, slogans and songs, some cities are fortunate to have an architectural icon that is immediately recognized by almost everyone worldwide.

  • Answering the President's Call
Answering the President’s Call PARTNERS FOR A NEW BEGINNING “Many of the partnerships I’ve mentioned are a direct result of my call in Cairo for a new beginning between the United States and Muslim communities around the world. And it involves the private sector as well, thanks to efforts like Partners for a New Beginning, which is forging partnerships around science, education and entrepreneurship.” - PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA N HIS HISTORIC ADDRESS IN CAIRO, President Obama called for a I new beginning between the US and Muslims around the world – one based on mutual under- standing, mutual respect, and mutual interests. The President’s message was clear: “The United States cannot do this alone and the United States Government cannot do this alone. All these things must be done in partnership.” As the primary private sector response to the Cairo speech, Partners for a New Beginning (PNB) is a coalition of eminent Americans who have committed to harness their resources and networks, while working with local leaders, to invest in revenue- generating and philanthropic projects in Muslim communities around the world. PNB is chaired by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and the Vice-Chairs are Coca-Cola CEO Muhtar Kent and Aspen Institute CEO Walter Isaacson. In order to fulfill the President’s vision, the US Department of State’s Global Partnership Initiative is working closely with PNB Steering Committee Members to harness the interest of other actors from the US private sector, non‐profits, foundations, academia, and civil society. With a particular focus on Egypt, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, and West Bank/Gaza, PNB will positively impact at least half a million lives over the next five years through efforts to increase access to financing, boost business capacity and development services, improve educational opportunities for students and teachers, foster physical and virtual exchange programs, and enhance science and technology solutions.
