The present geological period has more species than any other, yet the current rate of extinction of species is greater now than at any time in the past. Ecosystems and communities are being degraded and destroyed, and species are being driven to extinction. The species that persist are losing genetic variation as the number of individuals in populations shrinks, unique populations and subspecies are destroyed, and remaining populations become increasingly isolated from one another. The cause of this loss of biological diversity at all levels is the range of human activity that alters and destroys natural habitats to suit human needs.” (Primack, 2002). CapeNature launched its State of Biodiversity Programme (SoBP) to assess and monitor the state of biodiversity in the Western Cape in 1999. This programme delivered its first report in 2002 and these reports are updated every five years. The current report (2007) reports on the changes to the state of vertebrate biodiversity and land under conservation usage.

  • 5. Overview and Interpretation for the Future
The effects of a single freshwater release into the Kromme Estuary. 5. Overview and interpretation for the future GC Bate1 and JB Adams2* 1Consortium for Estuarine Research and Management Co-ordinator 2Department of Botany, University of Port Elizabeth, PO Box 1600, Port Elizabeth 6000, South Africa Abstract The Mpofu Dam completely blocks the Kromme River a few kilometers above the estuary and prevents a normal flow of freshwater. Because of this, the biological characteristics of the estuary have changed and the system is now more like an arm of the sea than a productive estuary. An annual allocation of 2 x 106 m 3 water (less than 2% of the natural mean annual run-off) is released to prevent the salinity in the estuary from rising above that of the sea (i.e. 35‰). An experiment was undertaken in which the annual allocation of freshwater was released as a single pulse in an attempt to create a salinity gradient and stimulate a biological response particularly in the estuary water column. The release was expected to create freshwater conditions throughout the upper half of the estuary. Instead the low density freshwater flowed over the more dense seawater and there was little mixing. A week after the release both the vertical and longitudinal salinity gradients began to disappear. The measurable concentration of mineral nutrients in the estuary after the release remained low, with the result that there was a negligible increase in microalgal biomass either in the water column or on the subtidal sediment. These effects were noticeable in the zooplankton and larval fish communities, both of which remained almost unchanged during and after the release.

Determining the hydrological functioning of the endemic Palmiet wetlands in the Eastern Cape of South Africa Jane Tanner (1), Caitlin Smith (1), Fred Ellery (2), and Denis Hughes (1) (1) Institute for Water Research, Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa ([email protected]), (2) Geography Department, Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa ([email protected]) Wetlands provide a range of supporting, regulating and provisioning ecosystem services, including hydrological benefits such as flood attenuation and sustaining base flows. Despite their value, wetlands are one of the most threatened ecosystems in South Africa, with almost 50% of wetland types regarded as critically endangered. Palmiet wetlands are particularly threatened, with serious consequences for water security in many towns in their catchments, including cities such as Port Elizabeth. Prionium serratum (Palmiet) is a robust perennial plant that is endemic to wetlands in the sandstones and quartzites of the Table Mountain Group (TMG) in the Eastern and Western Cape provinces of South Africa. Wetlands dominated by the Palmiet plant are collapsing across the distributional range of this species, largely as a consequence of gully erosion that may or may not have been initiated by human activities. Degradation of these wetlands also means that they are now producers of large quantities of sediment, which is generally deposited in artificial impoundments downstream, thus significantly shortening the lifespan of dams. Despite large investments by the State in wetland restoration, serious knowledge gaps in our understanding of Palmiet wetland structure and function remain, particularly in respect of the hydrological functioning of these systems.

The directory is divided into three main parts. The first part, which is the background, is introductory comments by President Nelson Mandela and other officials. The second part consists of three directory sections, namely South African youth and children's organizations, South African educational institutions, including technical training colleges, technikons and universities, and South African and international youth organizations. The section on South African youth and children's organizations, the largest section, consists of 44 sectoral chapters, with each organization listed in a sectoral chapter representing its primary activity focus. Each organization is at the same time also cross-referenced with other relevant sectoral chapters, indicated by keywords at the bottom of an entry.
